Dark

Unusually for Grantchester, this episode is unrelievedly dark. Geordie's memories and the threat to his marriage, Leonard's danger, the appalling conditions of the prison.

And that half sister of Will's has to go. She adds nothing to the series and is just an irritant.

Crime on the inside.
Sleepin_Dragon22 October 2021
A crime takes place on the other side of the bars, this time it's Leonard who's in hand to investigate.

I have never known this series to be so up and down, there has been somewhat of a fluctuation in quality, as with the previous Leonard story, this ranks at the top.

This truly was a fantastic watch, a cracking watch, a great story, great acting, and some real depth, this was an altogether more intense, heavier episode. I must once again commend Al Weaver, his acting is once again superb.

What's going on with Geordie? Why's he behaving so erratically? Is that where the last episode is heading?

Quality episode, 9/10.

Leonard is the shining light in this season.

Very dark and emotionally draining episode. Al Weaver was superb. The scene with Leonard addressing a homily to the prisoners had me in tears. I adore the character of Leonard. He is so good, deep, loving, and sincere. I can see why Daniel loves him.

I love Robson Green, but this episode was a tough one. The more I see Will, the more I dislike him. Everything Leonard is, Will is not.

Will's stepsister is a monumentally annoying character, and I don't understand why she's even in the story. Ditto the new curate. He is superfluous, since there likely won't be time to develop his character. Season is almost over.

When Television Is Really Good
Hitchcoc15 November 2021
I've watched this series from beginning to present and while there have been ups and downs and some changing characters, have really enjoyed it. This season, for me, is the best of all. The stories are serious and topical. Will has been put in a no win situation as Leonard's prison time seems endless. Geordi is carrying some baggage and is becoming more and more dark as he and old prison camp acquaintance, John, continue to meet. He is turning on his wife and family over memories of some kind. I will be really interested to see where things end up. One last thing. I, too, find the half sister to be a distraction and I wonder what her motives are. I'm sure there are plans for the future.

Episode 6.7

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode but I have to admit it was mainly because of the various absurdities in the storytelling. A guilty pleasure.

It opens with Leonard in prison. It is not Midnight Express but more Brubaker. A movie starring Robert Redford who arrives as the new prison governor undercover posing as a prisoner, so he can see just how harsh his new prison is.

There is a random scene where a black prisoner is walking past in the background and is assaulted by another prisoner.

One gay prisoner is killed and Leonard's fellow inmate is in the frame for murder. Leonard investigates but he also calls for Will and Geordie's help.

Which is fortuitous of Leonard as they arrive just in time to save Leonard from a severe beating from a corrupt prison officer.

There is a blackmail scam run by prison officers and that is linked to the murder. Someone is behind it.

The scenes of a prisoner in solitary confinement also triggers PTSD in Geordie who was held captive in the far east during the war. It ruins his wedding anniversary celebrations as he drinks too much.

A lot of it was just ham fisted like Geordie handily mentioning his time as a prisoner of war as the episode requires him to be in turmoil.

You also sensed that the prison chaplain was going to be dodgy. Even a blind prison officer would sense that Leonard was never going to assault a padre.
