Lost in the oceans

Although 'A Perfect Planet' has been criticised by some as being too preachy in what it says about climate change, to me it was another winner from the national treasure that is David Attenborough. Expectations were very high for the series' penultimate episode "Oceans", having been so amazed by the previous three episodes "Volcano", "The Sun" and "Weather". High expectations that were lived up to, and in my mind exceeded.

The world's oceans are not unfamiliar territory when it comes to nature documentaries and has actually featured frequently in Attenborough's filmography. That has never mattered though as there has always been something new to learn about the oceans and their wildlife. "Oceans" didn't feel like too familiar territory as it does have two unique and standout worthy sequences, and there are not many episodes about oceans anywhere that talks about climate change to this extent.

Like as has been said, this aspect is something that has attracted a good deal of criticism for 'A Perfect Planet'. Again though, this issue was in need of addressing and hearing the devastating statistics is more than enough to make one want to act upon what is shown here. Hearing what was said left me shocked, saddened and eager to take on board what is said and how climate change affects wildlife and the habitats.

"Oceans" looks wonderful as to be expected. The ocean is both gorgeous and unforgiving, the two things it is often portrayed as in any visual media. The photography cannot be faulted, especially when one sees the pod of dolphins in a scene that is astonishing in its beauty. The music has a wide range of emotions and doesn't come over as intrusive.

Can't fault Attenborough's narration/presenting delivery, which has sincerity but also authority. This is someone who knows what he is talking about and his over half and century's experience is evident. The narration itself in writing entertains, moves and educates. There are a few familiar animals, such as the pod of dolphins (have seen porpoises a number of times in the fishing village lived in now).

Furthermore, "Oceans" has two particularly amazing sequences that are series' highlights. One is the endearing eider ducks scene. Even better is the delicious flirtation part with the smitten cuttlefish.

Summing up, wonderful. 10/10.
