Bruno Kirby appeared on several episodes of the show as Herbie an annoying dweeb used for comic relief. In this episode he has become obsessed with contests entering them at every opportunity even if the fruits of his labors are only winning a box of ketchup. Bernie has had enough of this and writes a phony letter telling him he has won five hundred dollars. Herbie shows his good side by immediately making a downpayment on a washer and dryer for his mother forcing Bernie to fess up. Herbie is annoying as hell but you do pity him. There is a serious subplot about Liz thinking about another job which would take her far away from Pete. With Alice's urging Pete confesses his feelings for her and the program is cancelled in the end. There is an amusing subplot where Alice gives each of her students a ten page assignment only to realize she will have to read over a thousand pages of homework!

Herbie is constantly entering and losing contests but keeps telling everyone he is going to win big some day.
A good episode. B Kirby Jr returns to the role of Herbie. Bernie has gotten so annoyed with him that he plays a prank by sending a telegram to Herbie saying he won $500. Bernie feels guilty later on but can't bring himself to tell Herbie. A subplot has Liz thinking of taking another job in Washington DC.
