Fort Lauderdale, Fla – He was the heart throb-iest of the teen heart throbs when he came onto the scene in the early 1970s. David Cassidy was the driving force of the manufactured-for-tv pop act The Partridge Family, which provided a soundtrack for their era. Cassidy died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 67, on November 21st, 2017.
David Cassidy fought the demons of his sudden fame for virtually the rest of his life after the Partridge Family era, admitting an alcohol problem after being arrested for a DUI in 2013. Earlier this year, he announced that he was living with non-Alzheimer’s dementia, which ran in his family. But during the burst of infamy he had in the early 1970s, there was no greater beloved pin-up teen than Cassidy, who ushered in a parade of dreamy 1970s boys like Donny Osmond, Vincent Van Patten, Leif Garrett and his half brother, Shaun Cassidy.

A video-playlist of Lynchian proportions.
Of the many cryptic quotes uttered by the Man From Another Place in David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks, one of the more famous is the following:
“Where I come from the birds sing a pretty song and there’s always music in the air.”
This is meant to be a vague description of the otherworldly realm in which the Man dwells, but it’s equally as apt a description of the town of Twin Peaks, where between all the murdering, dimension hopping, and coffee consumption, there’s a fair amount of singing. Leland alone belts out “Get Happy,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “Getting to Know You,” and “Mairzy Doats” over the course of the series, and who could forget the honey-dripping, high-note doo-wop of James, Donna and Maddy recording the original “Just You?” or Julee Cruise and the band down at The Road House?

Broadway won’t be dark tonight, as some of the biggest names from both the stage and screen are set to take the stage for a special Hillary Clinton fundraiser under the auspicious banner “Stronger Together.” Billed as a “special evening at the theater,” the fundraiser will feature performances by Julia Roberts, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Emily Blunt, Neil Patrick Harris, Helen Mirren and many (many, seriously, so many) more, all in support of the Hillary Victory Fund.
Hosted by Billy Crystal, the evening will play home to a series of “exclusive duets,” including Sarah Jessica Parker and Andrea McArdle singing “Tomorrow” from “Annie” and Emily Blunt and Bernadette Peters belting out at least one jam from “Into the Woods.” Other promised performances include Hugh Jackman singing “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” Anne Hathaway and Kelli O’Hara singing “Get Happy / Happy Days Are Here Again,...

Last Week’S Review: Lin-Manuel Miranda Amazes, Astonishes in Trump-Heavy Episode
The long, national nightmare that is the 2016 election is a few weeks from wrapping up. This means that “Saturday Night Live” only has so much time left to tackle the dynamic between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and depraved businessman Donald Trump, and they’re not leaning away from it.
This week, an invigorated “SNL” took on “the second and worst ever” Presidential debate, passed out puppies to the audience, and introduced Emily Blunt as a legitimate comedic talent. Weekend Update even got in some jabs at Billy Bush and NBC! So what else worked, and what didn’t? Let’s dive in.
Best Sketch of The Night: “Melanianade”
If you try to parody Beyoncé, you have to do it as well as Queen Bey would, and — fortunately — “SNL” knows that. “Melanianade” was the show’s Trump-skewering version of Beyoncé’s “Lemonade,...

Anne Marie has been chronicling Judy Garland's career chronologically through musical numbers...
In 1957, a golden opportunity landed in Judy Garland's lap that looked, at first glance, like a lawsuit. In fact it was a lawsuit (and a counterlawsuit) concerning a contract she'd signed with CBS. Garland (on the advice of hubby Sidney Luft) had signed a $300,000 contract with CBS for three years of TV specials in 1955. However, only one special had ever aired. In 1957, Judy sued, which caused CBS to countersue. The result reads like something out of the rejected musical version of Adam's Rib: in 1961, Judy & CBS decided to put aside their differences (and lawsuits) to sign a new contract for two new specials. The first of these aired just a year later in 1962.

Apologies, gentle Judy fans. While I intended to bring you the usual dose of morning Garland sunshine, I failed in meeting either the requirement for sunshine or the morning deadline. In this case, however, that’s probably for the best. Considering the subject of this film, it is probably better that you have a cup of coffee and a bite to eat before you sit down to watch it. This week, I’m breaking with tradition slightly. While Judy Garland does not sing any numbers in Judgment at Nuremberg, this is a performance and a movie that must be seen.

Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress (first chapter here).
Walter had been so busy with midterms that he hadn't gone record-shopping recently. Neither had he spent his income on anything else, other than eating on the weekends, though he'd eaten better than usual. He'd wandered into a fast-food place on Broadway called Amy's and, for the first time in his life, had tried a falafel sandwich. Well, not really a sandwich, at least not as he thought of a sandwich, which was (mostly) meat between two separate pieces of bread, but he didn't know what else to call these things stuffed into pita bread. He'd liked it, not least because just one sandwich was very filling, so he had gone back regularly for lunch on weekends. It was a nice change of pace from the food at John Jay cafeteria. There never seemed to be many customers,...

Break out the jazz hands, it's Ariana Grande. The 22-year-old pop star has added Judy Garland to her list of awesome celebrity impressions that she can do. Grande impersonates the Wizard of Oz actress and singer, who died at age 47 in 1969, in a Saturday Night Live sketch cut for time from this past weekend's show. Grande's Garland stars in a fictional '60s sci-fi B-movie as a starship captain and performs the star's covers of the show tunes "Get Happy" and "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart." Grande nails the actress' overly dramatic acting—par for the course of her era—perfectly. "Well, shall we celebrate by...

2015 saw the start (or at least official dubbing) of #PeakTV, a recognition of the wealth of excellent television available to fans of the medium. This is reflected in PopOptiq’s staff list for the year: While our site-wide list separated neatly into a consensus just-over Top 20, 50 separate series received votes. Series from each of the networks and a wide range of cable channels and streaming services were nominated, showing just how wide an array of viewing options are available, and the variety of topic, tone, and theme of the series comprising the list is truly refreshing. 2015 is the year the glut of quality television threatened to overwhelm even the biggest TV fans. Here are the 20+ that stood out to our staff.

Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand's duet of "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again" is one of the great performances of the '60s. It's Judy at her gurgliest and Barbra at her bubbliest, and together they make a weirdly perfect team. Well, now they're both back in the form of singer Christina Bianco, who imitates both voices flawlessly. For comparison's sake, here's the original. Still wild.

Twin Peaks, Season 2, Episode 1, “May The Giant Be With You”
Written by Mark Frost
Directed by David Lynch
Aired September 30, 1990 on ABC
It was Laura and I saw her glowing. In the dark woods I saw her smiling. We were crying and I saw her laughing. In our sadness I saw her dancing. It was Laura living in my dreams. It was Laura. The glow was life. Her smile was to say it was alright to cry. The woods was our sadness. The dance was her calling. It was Laura and she came to kiss me goodbye.

In a alternate universe, bands sign to labels with overlords who enlist artistic services to line their own pockets. Dystopia! Tyranny! Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer -- who go by the name Tweedy for new album "Sukierae" -- made a decidedly big talent video for their song "Low Key." Comedian and "Parks & Rec" actor Nick Offerman directed stars like John Hodgeman, Michael Shannon, Conan O'Brien and Andy Richter, Tweedy collaborator Mavis Staples, Chicagoans Steve Albini, Chance the Rapper and more. The record company Neverland warps with a muzak version of the Tweedy-penned song, which then gives way to a Wes Andersonian odyssey of selling the vinyl version of "Sukierae" door-to-door in the Tweedy hometown. Some observations: 1. Why can't we all get paid in bags of money. 2. Think the "Get Happy" workshop is pointing out the finer merits of Pharrell's "Happy?" Happiness is in you, Tweedys. 3. Steve Albini probably doesn't...

New York (AP) — The first thing Billy Porter does when a visitor enters his dressing room is look down. "Oh, I like those shoes. Where did those shoes come from?" the Tony Award winner asks nicely. When told that the footwear in question is really just cheap and unremarkable, Porter jumps in. "Listen, inexpensive does not mean not nice." Porter has good reason to be so generous with compliments these days. He's celebrating his anniversary in the hit musical "Kinky Boots" and is about to release a new CD of Broadway standards. The 10 lushly orchestrated songs on "Billy's Back on Broadway" are a soundtrack of empowerment, encouragement, hope and enlightenment. Once those themes came to Porter, "it kind of wrote itself," he says. There's "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from "Gypsy," ''Don't Rain on My Parade" from "Funny Girl" and "Luck Be a Lady" from "Guys and Dolls." The style, title...

To say it’s been a good year for Billy Porter would be an understatement. The Broadway star achieved critical acclaim for his role as “Lola” in the Cyndi Lauper/Harvey Fierstein hit musical Kinky Boots, which will celebrate its one year anniversary this April. Porter also secured a well-deserved Tony Award in 2013, as well as a Grammy for the show’s original cast album, and is now planning to release his first solo album in almost a decade. Titled Billy’s Back On Broadway, the debut CD from Concord Records will be released April 15, featuring a collection of classic Broadway tunes with a new,...

Macaulay Culkin, the child actor-turned-kitsch band member, has officially moved on from his heartbreak over longtime girlfriend Mila Kunis with actress Jordan Lane Price.
Jordan Lane Price Dating Macaulay Culkin
Price was first linked with Culkin, 33, in November, when the couple took a trip to Paris over Thanksgiving. While in the City of Light, Culkin and Price toured the Center Pompidou and ate diner at Chez Georges. The also enjoyed each other's company at Café de Flore, where Culkin was captured leaning over to give Price a quick kiss.
"They were very animated and talked together a lot," a fellow patron told People at the time. "They kissed at the table and were very comfortable. They have the air of being very much in love."

Even in a television world full of DVRs, streaming services, and YouTube, commercials are still going strong. It’s a fact that all Super Bowl fans are well aware of, along with some of the other live-Tweeters left out there. And, as has always been the case with commercials, some are better than others. There are the ones that make you laugh every time they come on, the ones that somehow make you cry in less than two minutes, and the ones you wish you could un-see. Christmas is a magical time. It’s a time when people come together, put aside their differences and truly, live for the moment. Sure, there are some pessimists who say that the spirit of the holidays has been perverted by the corporate conglomerates who are trying to bleed every last penny from the general populace, but to them I say ,“Bah humbug”.
The holidays are what you make it. If you want to get all pissy because someone wants to sing a Christmas carol and bake you cookies, thats your prerogative. Me and mine? We’re gonna eat those cookies dammit, and we’re going to watch the heck out of Die Hard. Why? Because it’s Christmas. I mean, it could be worse. You could be a drugged up in a hospital bed, hallucinating a blue horse with wings.

Glee, Season 5, Episode 2, “Tina In the Sky with Diamonds“
Written by Ian Brennan
Directed by Ian Brennan
Airs Thursday 9pm Et on Fox
Glee’s second episode of the season and second half of their Beatles tribute is fun and filled to the brim with well-executed and unique Glee-ifed versions of The Beatles’ best experimental era work. While the musical performances are strong, this episode seems to highlight all the character development issues viewers have been fed up with in the recent past. Likewise, writing for this episode is not as strong as the season opener. On a positive note, the actors are spot on and distract from some of the cheesy dialogue.
Character development-wise, there are some issues that have been ongoing in past seasons and the trend continues into season five. It always feels like the writers are never sure how to utilize the character of Sam Evans...

Nothing to "Get Happy" about here. Partridge Family star David Cassidy was arrested shortly after midnight on Wednesday, Aug. 21, for driving while intoxicated, ABC News and other outlets report. He has since been released from police custody. According to TMZ, the 63-year-old actor/singer was pulled over outside Albany for driving with his high beams. The arresting officer -- named Tom Jones -- reportedly smelled alcohol on Cassidy's breath and administered a field sobriety test, which the star did not pass. Most know her as Mrs. Partridge on "The Partridge Family." Now, get to know her as an author. Shirley Jones released a memoir Tuesday (July 23) and she's pulling no punches with tales from her personal life, especially the ones related to sex.
Sure, Jones recounts her show business history, from stage to screen, but she also spends some time talking about her first husband, who she refers to as a "sexual Svengali" the Associated Press reports. She dishes on how well-endowed the man, actor and singer Jack Cassidy who was also dad to her "Partridge" co-star David Cassidy, was and how "highly sexed" she found herself at the time. She even recalls a threesome with another woman, which she wasn't too fond of.
Jones and her current husband, comedian Marty Ingels, look back on her earlier years humorously. When asked about his wife's sexual escapades, Ingels jokes, "All that stuff she did with her [first] husband,...

One of the real exciting announcements to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review) is finally making its way to video. Michael Plumides is a filmmaker who was instrumental in making this happen.
Plumides recently sat down with Dread Central and talked about his experiences helping Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut finally see the light of day.
Dread Central: What was your role in this venture?
Michael Plumides: Well, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I've lived in Georgia and South Carolina I was born and raised here. And though my 4808 Club was shut down by the city after the infamous Gwar show of 1990, I still consider this my home - even if they tried to run me out on a rail. I wrote a book about it entitled, Kill the Music that someday I hoped to turn into a film.

Director Andrew Bujalski invented mumblecore with his 2002 debut, Funny Ha Ha. His latest film, Computer Chess, stars the geeky competitors of an eighties virtual-chess tournament. These are the movies, books, TV shows, albums, and European countries that shaped his work. 1. Austin City Lights and Brookline Is My Lady (Public-access TV shows)Public access is always the best thing on TV. It’s the last stand of the avant-garde. Austin City Lights was this stunning show with a cast of eccentrics, including a strange woman named “Flash” Jordan Thomas and her mother, Lady B. I have a strong memory of them standing around singing a song they seemed to be making up on the spot. Brookline Is My Lady was a variety show from Boston in the nineties. Sketch-comedy stuff that you wouldn’t find in a more professional production. 2. Elvis Costello, Get Happy!!If I could be a musician, I...

Kanye West: Yeezus (Def Jam)
Has an early leak ever seemed more intentional and manufactured? Whoops, shouldn't have gone there -- I've vowed to review Yeezus without bringing into the discussion anything that isn't on the album. I don't care about how much of an ass somebody is as long as s/he makes good music. True, Mr. West plays off his public image in his lyrics, and true, I do have a strong distaste for the selfish whining of rich people, such as when they bitch about not getting their croissant fast enough (yes, that happens on Yeezus). (Hey, speaking of "bitch," I haven't counted, but I suspect that it's the most-spoken word on Yeezus.) But the fact that Elvis Costello made racist comments in 1979, though disappointing on a personal level, doesn't influence my enjoyment of his next album, Get Happy!; their membership in the Nazi party hasn't...

This is a story of two Kongs. King Kong the six metre tall marionette, weighing in at more than a tonne, that draws gasps from the audience when it appears on stage, team of ninja puppeteers at every joint – enormous, majestic, unlike any other theatrical star. And King Kong the musical, confused both musically and narratively – packed full of ambition and innovation, but unable to pull its constituent parts into one satisfying whole.
Admittedly, once Kong reaches the stage, you can't think of much else. Really this is a puppet like no other. The sheer scale of him is astonishing enough, but the expression and emotion his operators manage to impart, scurrying across the stage and the beast in a dance to rival the most complicated chorus number, is incredible. A breathtaking scene in which the giant gorilla does battle with an equally gargantuan serpent is unlike...

Not every Super Bowl spot was considered a touchdown. Watch HollywoodLife.com’s picks for the night’s five most forgettable fumbles.
The biggest companies in the world dropped millions of dollars for a 30-second spot during Super Bowl Xlvii on Feb. 3 — and, oh boy, did some of them totally waste their money! HollywoodLife.com already listed the eight best Super Bowl commercials of the night; so now let’s turn our attention to the evening’s biggest stinkers.
GoDaddy.com: ‘Bar Refaeli’s Big Kiss!’
You may have noticed this ad appeared on both our best and worst lists, so allow me to explain: While I enjoyed the commercial’s gross appeal, most people apparently just found it gross. And not at all appealing. It turns out people have a hard time downing their favorite Super Bowl snacks while watching Bar Refaeli suck face with a chubby ghost.
