Tries to address the subject of sexism in gaming, but suffocates it with badly timed lowbrow comedic backwash leftover from the mid-2000s
IonicBreezeMachine16 July 2022
At Barrett University, Vivian "V" (Paris Berelc) and Sloane (Hari Nef) are two students attending the college on an esports scholarship playing for Barrett's team called the Betas. Following one too many casually sexist comments from the team's other members lead by team leader Dustin (Taylor Zakhar Perez), V and Sloane quit the team and start their own team the 8-Bits with Wheelchair bound influencer Jenna (Lolita Milena), eccentric oddball Lilly (Madison baines), and flatulent LARPing enthusiast Diane (D. J. Mausner). The group of misfits approach History of Video Games professor Parker (Ruby Rose) who had previously worked as a game designer before a glut of harassment and death threats force her to leave the industry out of fear for her son's life and while initially reluctant eventually is convinced to serve as the 8-Bits coach. Now with their scholarships and livelihoods on the line, the team must band together to overcome their own idiosyncrasies, win the intercollegiate esports tournament, and beat the Betas.

1up comes to us from director Kyle Newman and screenwriter Julia Yorks. Newman is no stranger to films tackling fan culture such as his 2009 film Fanboys, while Yorks is more known for her work in children's animated TV such as The Adventures of Puss n' Boots or Trolls: The Beat Goes On. With a charged premise like sexism in gaming and clear allusions to things like Gamergate, 1up seems like something that could've been a provocative satire of a recurring deep rooted problem we see in this community, unfortunately in execution it's a rehash of mid 2000s comedy tropes that have long since been run into the ground and only has fleeting moments of thematic or emotional resonance.

The movie is basically Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story only with Dodgeball replaced with esports gaming, but unlike Dodgeball which took an inherently pretty silly sport like Dodgeball and made the fandom around it part of the joke, 1up takes something that's very real with esports gaming but it presents it in a way that's very broad and glib like an ordinary lowbrow comedy but also talking real world ills in this fandom such as Swatting which is used as setup for a fart/poop joke. As a comedy the movie goes to the school of "loud=funny" so the cast is filled with a bunch of types who are given one note and they play that note at full volume so. Characters like Diane and Jenna are basically repackages of characters you see Rebel Wilson/Melissa McCarthy play or various eccentric weirdo characters like Steve the Pirate only the timing and interactions feel very off and force and become grating after a while. The first hour plays in this fashion but thankfully it does dial back the abrasiveness in the last third where it becomes tolerable if not "good" and I did get some chuckles from sight gags such as a scene in the game where Lilly plays a fire breathing chicken. Most of the characters don't really get a chance to stand out which is a shame as Paris Berelc has shown herself to be a capable actress in other things but has nothing to work with here. The one performance/character who works is Ruby Rose as Parker who's basically an amalgam of various female gaming figures who were forced out of the industry through organized harassment campaigns and she's the only character who gets any emotional resonance as a character and frankly her backstory would've made for a better movie and take on this subject matter.

1Up is given rich potential and squanders it in the most lowbrow and wasteful fashion it can. While it does address or try to address real world problems in the gaming community, the way it handles them in such a broad and glib fashion ends up working against its point rather than for it. If you want to learn more about this type of thing, you'd be much better informed simply reading an article about the real world events that actually inspired this movie. If you want to see a comedy about gamers, watch The Wizard (the characters in the movie even stop to do so), it's not "good" but it's enjoyable.

3/10 - I will admit there were a few laughs courtesy of Paris Berelc and Hari Nef in between the constant cringe and near constant attempts to ripoff Pitch Perfect, but my biggest question is how did they manage to get so many big names for this and why these actors haven't fired their agents already.

They could've done better than that
tilljonas8 July 2022
Production value was not the problem, it was more like the story and what they try to attend with this movie. It´s about a girl who founds an all womens esports team with a few non-professional gamers. At this point you can guess the whole plot already. At the beginning the´re really bad and then they rise and get better and all that stuff...Predictable. Screenwriting wasn´t any better, some dialogues are just cringe, some actions just not fitting. Feels like a B-movie, but not a good one. But I can see it that way, that the filmmakers were given the possibility to make movie, to get experience. Nobody can expect to be pro just in a minute. That´s why I am suprised with the production value, it´s not over the top, but still high for an amateur like movie.

Acting was ok, i guess they intended to overact a little.

The main reason, why this movie is not working out is that they don´t really have choosen a target group. I mean it is about gaming, you can make movie for gamers or you can try to get non-gamers, too. I guess they tried to get the whole audience, but it´s not working out. It´s difficult to get an whole audience, Free Guy would be a good example were it worked out, but this is an another level of filmmaking. If they just focused on gamers, they could´ve focused on a more advanced plot, built tension by using all what competitive gaming contains and not just building a rivaly between teams.

But in the end they missed the gamer audience as well as the non-gamers.

Still 3/10, because I like that they tried and they had the possibility to make this movie. If they learned from it and come up with more experience it was worth it.

What utter cr*p...
cwilltink23 July 2022
I've never rated a movie less than 5/10... I can usually find some light to bring it up a tad...

This? I'd give it a zero if I could.

The script is horrible. The scenes make no sense. The relationships are completely unbelievable. Ruby Rose's acting is poor.

The gaming events should be intense, but they just put you to sleep.

It was utter cringe.

From gross to worse - a disservice to diversity
alexandra-zahar13 July 2022
An overall decent quality production brought down to the bottom by an awful lazy writing full of commonplace scenarios and over-the-top stereotypical characters.

An entirely predictable story from start to finish - a team of misfits facing adversity - it could have been a fun easy watch if not for its harmful depiction of unidimensional over-the-top diversity stereotypes that go from gross to worse, exaggerated acting, as well as its extremely puerile humor based on genital and bodily function jokes; all of which this movie pretends to sell as actual positive representation.

Ironically, Ruby Rose is far from being the one to blame and was actually, along with Taylor Zakhar Perez, one of the actors whose work was rather entertaining within the severe writing limitations of the script.

All in all a total waste of time and a disservice to each and every community in their checklist.

The worst movie i have ever watched.
disposable-6031322 July 2022
There are so many faults in this movie it is hard to find a place to start. Firstly the acting, characters, directing, and writing isn't good. Every scene in the movie had so many cringeworthy lines in it and all the characters are either hyperbolized stereotypes or just ultra diverse pandering. Then there is the competitive gaming aspect of it. The way that the team starts just isn't real. Collegiate teams have lots of scouting and tryouts to join the team. Also there are very few women who play games let alone play enough to climb the ladder to pro. You actually need to be good at the game and high ranked. You don't just decide you want to start a team and recruit random people and hold interviews. Also you don't compete in the "collegiate esport league". Also you don't just "train" by drinking and playing nintendo 64 games. Then there is the game part. This is a real game, but as the movie goes on the game gets twisted and is just used as plot armor and the scenes with the chicken burning everything down and the blood character just morphing around are just not real. Overall. The movie is clearly just a stunt made by people who know nothing about the gaming scene. If they wanted to make a movie about diversity or sexism they should have just done that instead of masquerading their intentions with this movie.

lara croft
pjbuck-3272220 July 2022
So 10 minutes in they are talking about Lara Croft and how the industry sexualized her to sell games... then they have a girl as the lead with very large tracks of land wearing a tank top most of the time... If you're trying to rise above it or help others to do so, then why do you dive right down to the bottom of it, without ever coming close to getting to the bottom of anything... Though the big girl telling the dude bro .... you just don't see many pegging jokes.... Let's just say I wouldn't make a football movie without knowing even a little bit about the game of soccer. They made a really bad video game movie, and a worse movie about equality.

Just watched this and it was just awful. A lot of amateur actors, and a clinchen story. Save yourself the time and watch something else. This was just another woke-crap movie.

Unbelievably inept, boring and annoying.
brettdeath10 July 2022
Going into this film I did not expect much. The reason I has so little-expectations for the film was primarily due to the 1.9 IMDb score which, I must admit, I know is probably (at least slightly) review-bombed. Nonetheless, I still gave it a shot. Initially there was nothing particularly terrible. Of course the cinematography and production design were... poor... but It was at least mildly interesting. Then 1UP revealed what it truly was! CRAP! The character dynamics between the two leads; Sloane and Lee were un-interesting and trivial at best. The acting from both actress' is also shockingly under-developed and thought out. However, the script is so poor that I bet no A-list actor could've given a real shot at it, so perhaps the actress' do have talents that just aren't represented here. The supporting cast and there characters are akin to a troupe of stereotypes you may have found in a 90s DTV Bottom-of-the-dollar-bin teen attempted-comedy. There are extended periods where the groups are playing each-other and these parts are excruciatingly boring. I can't continue this review without pointing out two of the most annoying characters I have had the insincere opportunity of watching. Lilly played by Madison Baines and Diane played by D. J. Mausner. Both characters are equally annoying in their own rights but the worst of the two is by-far Lilly. Lilly is the 'weird, quirky' friend in the main group and her whole character is based around this. More one-dimensional than the perfect line. And Diane is the gross chick in the group. But I hope to never see that damn lilly actress 'Madison Baines' in anyhting ever again!!! Terrible film. May provide inspiration to like two people. That's it. To the other 100,000. Pure Pain. PURE TORTURE!

Chickens Rule!!
gab-6759910 July 2022
This movie was just all around FUN!! For someone who is not young or a gamer, you would think I would never enjoy a movie like this. It was entertaining and just overall fun to watch. With gurl gaming power being the main focus here. The jokes made me laugh and the story was easy enough to follow. Even though I am sure this story has been done before the cast was original. Amazon is trying to step up their game and fall in line behind Netflix and Hulu fantasy/adventure movies, I can respect their efforts. This might have been enjoyable if you were in college or an older young adult. Not really for kids or teens, due to sex and drug references. I would not mind seeing this one again, the graphics really made you feel like you were really inside the game.

Physically painful
lancecarter-354892 August 2022
I saw it on prime video, and felt it had an adequate opening, but dropped it right after they finished the practice match when I felt physical pain at the logic they had for the team. Before they finished the match, I even sympathized with the main character, since I was a support main back in my league days, but the stereotyping was misplaced, teams can't really do the misogynistic roles, and no one who knows any better disregards a support player. Other problems, role doesn't equal team position or skill. If you want to watch something with females in a good role, watch "King's Avatar" and save yourself the pain.

Fun and good hearted, what's not to like.
coalandswitches-112 July 2022
I'm not into eSports and I'm certainly not the target audience here and I still liked this film. Why? Because it's accessible and touches on universal themes! It also asks some pretty realistic questions about gender and sexism but doesn't make them the sole focus. It's about friendship and as a parent of a gamer, it gave me some additional insight into why my kid loves games like this in the first place. The director also made a great looking film and I know enough about filmmaking to know he didn't have a big budget to do that.

It's not great either. Definetly watchable. Definetly not a 2/10. Wow. I don't review movies, but a 2 is wrong so I was compelled to leave this.

Having footage of the game Paragon and Countess Brought back great memories...

100% unwatchable
kosminuskosminus10 July 2022
Esports as a hole is a multi trillion of any currency market with billion of players and everyone and i meen everyone know how things go and this movie confuses what it is with what actually is .

A movie with a script and director clearly from another edge with no idea how things go in any online gaming team of any pvp game.

I am a old gamer with many many many years (decades) in COUNTER STRIKE / WORLD OF WARCRAFT and STAR TREK ONLINE and i am so old that i even played MU ONLINE , but i still had to google what 1UP means or 8BITS .

-- this movie is not worth anyones time -- ASK S1MPLE or KENNY as something is telling me the producers of this movie have no idea in hell who this guys are .

This movie is not about esports or online pvp or anything related to online gaming and is so terrible that becomes 100% unwatchable.

The worst movie in 2022!
mrz_nr110 November 2022
The motive behind this movie is totally what not gaming is about. So sick of movies that could have great potential but Force Feed the viewers of the wrong in our society. I'm pointing out the Gender topics, the Pro-nouns topics, especially what this movie portray - the Bad Male image topics. Professional Gaming is about anyone and everyone. This movie is for the LGBQT and feminist specific audience. Something for them to enjoy...... Not going to waste my time diving into the "writing" or the "acting". This "film" wasted enough of my time. I'm only here to do my part to ensure anyone on the fence about seeing this, doesn't.

I mean, it wasn't the worst movie
cscott233122 July 2022
It was goofy and cheesy. Extremely predictable. It wasn't on a Ready Player One level by any means but I didn't expect it to be. Didn't much care for the lead, but I haven't liked her in anything she done. I didn't come here for her anyway.

Madison Barnes was great, I've enjoyed Hari Nef in what I've seen her in and she was decent in this. I've never seen Lolita Milena in anything before and I liked her. All in all it was an okay way to waste an hour and a half. Not one I'd watch again, but I certainly wouldn't say I hated it.

Enjoyable
prystalcage7 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story does fall a bit short but it is still very enjoyable. There is a full story, and the formula is similar to Pitch Perfect. The only difference is unlike pitch perfect, you do not fully get into the world of the video game like you do with the world of singing competitions of Pitch Perfect.

Incredibly diverse cast, sweet moments, and the performances are very much in the Disney movies vein -- larger than life performances, clear clean comedy, and characters you mostly care about. The opponents are believable but the Dean's character is a bit over the top and flat. Some fun surprises towards the end and the team montage of how they grow together is pretty great.

The only thing I wanted was more depth of story from the main character Vivian and coach Parker. Sloane and Owen were great characters and would've loved to dive into their stories and the video game more.

The date scene was really cute. Montage of the video game interviews (hilarious). Chicken is funny - I wish we could've gone into the video game earlier.

It's a fun, light, bubble gum-esque movie which deals with videogames, gender, and friendship. It was enjoyable.

The only redeeming things were some funny jokes and if you're a guy then the lead actress' bra size maybe. Other than that, it really wasn't that great sadly and I really wanted it to be :-(

It's not politics
seidelemily1 October 2022
If you're expecting a movie that will bolster your political/religious/cultish ideas, this might not be the film for you... but, if you like videogames a semi-decent amount (enough to understand a lot of the humor and enough to get nervous and/or excited at the "will they make it???" moments) and want some solid entertainment, this is one for you!

1. I'm a fan of Ruby Rose and she kept her level of grandness here 2. I've enjoyed my days of gaming and the nods to specific games were enough to get me grinning like a munchkin 3. The storyline and character arcs were both enjoyable and left me feeling satisfied

It was how I'd imagine if "Pitch Perfect" had a baby with "Ready Player 1." I was leaning towards an 8 star, but I feel like even "Fat Amy's" humor wasn't quite as crude as the Elven one. Still, most certainly enjoyed it!

Better than the ratings indicate
Hammer-Rocks30 September 2022
I've hesitated to watch this movie for quite some time now due to its low rating in IMDB. But during one rainy day, with nothing else to do, I did. And I'm glad I did, as the movie is better than my expectations.

Sure, it has a simplistic and utterly predictable storyline, and have stereo-type characters. Ruby Rose's character is just like a footnote. Her acting in this was wooden and wasn't convincing of the character she's portraying. But the rest, including the lead Paris Berelc, did a good job. The vibe of the movie reminds me of old teen movies from the 80s & 90s. While it won't be winning any Academy awards anytime soon, it's entertaining enough. Enough to forget the lousy weather outside.

VERDICT: Give it a go, you might just be surprised.

1up movie is horrible
robzombierocker29 July 2022
Did anybody notice that the knights of elder orb was based on a game that has been shut down in April 2018 and that my friend I will never forget the video game characters that I saw its called Paragon I'll tell you what I was deeply upset that they had to shut it down I was devastated but they had the nerve to bring a game thats been shut down for 4 years bro I'm really pissed that I watched 101 minutes and I was in so much pain that I played Paragon when it first came out and it was one of my favorite moba games ever and they had to shut it down because they didn't have enough people playing it so they had no choice but to shut down the game but I'm sorry but 1up can kiss my ass excuse me for my language but this is a huge disgrace for the gaming community I'm giving this a 2 out of 10.
