Mondo Penguin (2009)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Vincent Gargiulo wrote and directed this "documentary" about the need for appreciation when it comes to penguin movies. Yes, everyone knows MARCH OF THE PENGUINS and HAPPY FEET but this documentary digs into some of the lesser known movies in the genre and explains why this part of film history needs to be saved. There's also discussion with various experts on why so many movies are being lost. MONDO PENGUIN is a fake documentary but it's mildly charming in its own ways. If you're a film buff then you've probably seen countless documentaries about countless films so this short was actually fairly clever in the way it spoofs such films. I really liked the brief segment on why so many penguin films are now considered lost. There's certainly nothing ground-breaking here and the film isn't quite as funny as one might hope but there's certainly talent behind the camera.
