The film is dedicated to Davey Thomas Tucker, a young composer who died tragically in 2020. He was the director's first choice to compose music for the film before it began production. Although Tucker could not take on the project, his music inspired some of the scenes.
Exvallis is a combination of the Latin words "Ex" and "Vallis". The film's title means "Of the Valley" or "From the Valley" which is inspired by the Twenty-third Psalm. "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me."
Production began in 2016.
Filmed over the course of three years.
