Patty Jenkins discusses the end of one project and the beginning of another as she gives an update on the status of her planned Star Wars movie.
Ever since the release of Wonder Woman 1984 back in 2020, Patty Jenkins has jumped from blockbuster project to blockbuster project, but without ever getting to the point of actually entering production. As such, we’re now four years on from the release of that film and Jenkins is still developing films to make.
While we’re hoping that her career doesn’t undergo a 14 year movie directing hiatus like the gap that exists on her filmography between 2003’s Monster and 2017’s Wonder Woman, it has been four years now where she’s moved from project to project as the tectonic plates of Hollywood have continually shifted beneath her.
There was a Cleopatra project with Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot that Jenkins was set to direct.

Is Marvel combatting superhero fatigue by incorporating aspects of classic cinema? Not yet apparently, but Ryan Reynolds seemed very interested in doing so at one point. Speaking to Empire for a cover feature on “Deadpool & Wolverine” in next week’s issue, Reynolds told them his first pitch to Kevin Feige for the film was a “‘Rashomon’ story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something that they got into together, but told from three completely different perspectives.”
For context, “Rashomon” is a 1950 Jidaigeki drama from Akira Kurosawa that was the first Japanese film to receive international acclaim, winning the Golden Lion at the 1951 Venice Film Festival, as well as an Honorary Oscar in 1952. The film tells the story of how a samurai was murdered, multiple times through multiple vantage points. Of all the roles Charlize Theron has donned to date, perhaps none comes as close to playing Furiosa in the Mad Max saga. That being said, fans also awaited for her to reprise her iconic role and return to the screens in character for the upcoming prequel and spin-off based on her character’s name. However, things went a bit downhill for her for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Charlize Theron (via her Instagram)
While there was a chance for her to star as the noted character in this prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road as well, she instead had to give her up to Hollywood’s currently raging heartthrob Anya Taylor-Joy. And while the younger actress says Theron holds no hard feelings toward her because of the same, the one to blame for this decision is none other than the helmer of the saga, George Miller.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.

Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” is primed for a big night at this year’s Emmys. Adapted from the Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same name, the limited series follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family who were split apart during World War II: some members go into hiding and others are forced into concentration camps. Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.
Michael Starr (New York Post) stated: “My advice is to sit back and enjoy Douglas as he admirably chews the scenery and...

Content warning: This article discusses topics that may be triggering to some readers, including stalking, grooming, and sexual assault.
"Baby Reindeer" is the latest Netflix phenomenon, the must-see limited series that people can't stop talking about. Starring Scottish comedian Richard Gadd and based on his award-winning play of the same name, "Baby Reindeer" is a dramatized look at real events Gadd endured when he was stalked by a woman he refers to as "Martha," and how his prior, unresolved history with sexual assault directly influenced how he responded to the situation. Given that Gadd is essentially reliving his trauma, "Baby Reindeer" differs from the majority of "based on true events" adaptations in that the person telling the story was actually there. There's no mystery to solve because the show's survivor is the one shaping the narrative.
But despite Gadd's tireless attempts to keep the identities of his abuser, his stalker,...

Many of Michael Jackson‘s posthumously released songs are available on streaming. Three were removed. One member of Jackson’s family questioned their authenticity.
La Toya Jackson said some Michael Jackson songs removed from streaming are fishy
Jackson’s musical legacy is still being felt after his death in major ways. Following his death, the King of Pop’s estate put out two albums of previously unreleased material: 2010’s Michael and 2014’s Xscape. Some of the songs from Michael turned heads due to allegations the vocalist singing them was not Jackson.
According to NPR, Jackson’s sister, La Toya, once sewed seeds of doubt. “I am shocked that things have gotten this far,” she tweeted. “This is ridiculous. I was at the studio when these questionable files were delivered. I heard these ‘so-called’ Michael Jackson songs raw and without the distraction of the well-produced music by Teddy Riley. Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

“Shōgun” is looking to become the next “Game of Thrones” Emmy sensation thanks to its similar awe-inspiring world-building combined with political machinations and stunning performances. The FX series adapts James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name. The story follows an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan while Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan.
Husband and wife duo Rachel Kondo and “Top Gun: Maverick” story writer Justin Marks oversee this spectacular mini-series, which is a comprehensive, historical study that transcends world-building to present compelling characters. The expansive cast all deliver career-best work while Kondo and Marks handle each plot thread smartly and expertly.

It’s been great to see the classic monsters returning in modern tales. From more Hollywood takes like Leigh Whannel’s The Invisible Man to the more indie darlings like The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster, the monsters have never been more relevant. And Larry Fessenden is no stranger to the world of monsters, having previously created his own iteration of Frankenstein’s Monster with Depraved as well as his own Wendigo film, aptly titled Wendigo. Now he’s taking on werewolf lore with his new film Blackout.
I was lucky enough to sit down with both Larry and the star of Blackout, Alex Hurt, to discuss the film. From the clear Lon Chaney influence to using alcoholism as a parallel for his transformation, this stands out from other modern werewolf tales. I was also fortunate enough to talk to Alex about the passing of his father, William, who...

"The Fugitive" ran for four seasons on ABC from 1963 to 1967. The series followed Dr. Richard Kimble (David Janssen), a (you guessed it) fugitive accused of murdering his wife. Pursued across the country by lawman Philip Gerard (Barry Morse), he tries to prove his innocence by finding the real killer.
On one hand, "The Fugitive" is as episodic as you'd expect from a 1960s TV show. Each episode features Kimble in a different town with a new problem to solve. The backstory is also told via title sequence; the first episode, "Fear in a Desert City," is just another adventure for Kimble, not the murder, trial, and Kimble's escape the way it would be today. However, there's also some serialization with the story threads of Gerard hunting Kimble and Kimble hunting the real murderer, a one-armed man (Bill Raisch). These reach their conclusion in the finale, "The Judgment."
With such a simple and exciting premise,...

George Waggner's 1941 horror film "The Wolf Man" introduced audiences to, essentially, the "second officer" of the Universal Monsters canon. Everyone knows that Dracula is the captain of the monster ship, and that Frankenstein is his first officer (a position he often shares with the Bride). The Wolf Man is always third in command, perhaps serving as a security officer or an enforcer. Mummies, gillmen, invisible men, Dr. Hydes, and other ancillary ghouls serve lower down in the crew.
Watching the original "Wolf Man" film, however, reveals a dark and sad tale about Larry Talbot who is attacked by a wolf on a misty night in Wales, afflicting him with the curse of the werewolf. Throughout the year, Larry will transform into an animalistic wolf/human creature and stalk and kill random victims. The tale is terrifying and tragic and inspired many pop culture tales to follow -- as well as many nightmares.

If you’ve been anywhere near a television in the last couple of years, odds are you’re already familiar with Dominic Burgess. The British actor broke through in 2017’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” as actor Victor Buono, before popping up in a number of memorable appearances — playing everything from serial killer John Wayne Gacy in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to an accident-prone man on “The Good Place” whose hideous red boots create an existential crisis for Chidi.
Most recently, the actor has been stealing scenes as Grayman, the stylist to the grande dames (including Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney) on Apple TV’s “Palm Royale” — and as Hamish Moss, a director on the rise on “American Horror Story: Delicate.” That is, he was on the rise before the April 3 episode, in which Moss met a gruesome death at the hands of Kim Kardashian’s devilish publicist.

“Lessons in Chemistry” is Apple TV’s shiny new limited series and it looks like the streaming service has another major Emmy player. Oscar winner Brie Larson is Elizabeth Zott, a lab technician in the 1960s who takes up a gig as the host of a cooking show and uses her position to educate women about scientific topics. “The Office” writer and director and “Jury Duty” creator Lee Eisenberg adapted Bonnie Garmus‘ book of the same name. Critics were effusive in their praise of the show.
Peter Travers (ABC News) wrote: “This fierce, funny and vital series tackles a mid-century battle for women’s rights through the eyes of a chemist—an Emmy-bound Brie Larson—who uses a local TV cooking show to lead the charge.”
Cristina Escobar (Roger Ebert) noted: “Lee Eisenberg crafts an aspirational fairytale, building a positively lovely universe and central heroine to spend eight episodes with.

The Beatles and Donovan both made some of the defining songs of the 1960s. Donovan revealed that “Sunshine Superman” reused a musical trick that was in several Fab Four songs. Notably, “Sunshine Superman” reached a milestone that several Beatles songs did. However, it aged better than some of those songs in the long run.
Donovan said ‘early Beatles songs’ inspired the chords of ‘Sunshine Superman’
During a 2013 interview with Performing Songwriter, the “Hurdy Gurdy Man” singer discussed the inspiration behind “Sunshine Superman.” “Musically, the song is built on a chord structure that came from listening to early Beatles songs,” he said. “I was messing with C7th and the odd G changes.” While “Sunshine Superman” takes some inspiration, it doesn’t sound much like any of The Beatles’ songs. While it’s a psychedelic tune, none of The Beatles’ psychedelic tunes have a comparable groove.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we break down the loaded limited series field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve reached what is maybe my favorite Emmys category of the year. Peak TV is dead and Mass TV is arguably on the ropes, but you wouldn’t know it from the absolutely stacked limited series and TV movie roster. What a time to be alive? There are multiple series here that I’m excited about, too many, in fact, to fit into the five slots for Best Limited Series. But right now I feel pretty good about the shows I do have represented. First in my heart and on my predictions list is “Shōgun,” our favorite “Succession” prequel and just a complete smash. Great crafts, beautiful crafts,...

“True Detective” season four, officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” has returned the HBO crime series to its former glories after seasons two and three disappointed. This entry follows Jodie Foster as a police chief investigating the vanishing of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
One of many things, along with the eerie town and Lovecraftian seasoning, that makes this series so excellent is its cast. Two-time Oscar-winner Foster is joined by a trio of other veterans — Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and John Hawkes — plus a pair of newcomers: former boxer Kali Reis and rising star Finn Bennett. Bennett plays police Officer Peter Prior, the son of Hawkes’ Captain Prior, and he turns in a nuanced, memorable performance. Critics have agreed, too, he makes the strongest impression amongst the series’ supporting cast.

Showtime’s “Fellow Travelers” depicts a sweeping, complex romance across the ages in one of the most acclaimed pieces of television this year. Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey are the couple in question and both men are at the top of their game here.
Bomer has always been a commanding performer, capturing viewers’ attention every moment he’s on-screen. As the closeted Hawk Fuller, he delivers a performance of vulnerability and restraint. Critics agree, it’s some of his best work.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Bomer and Bailey deserve all the credit coming their way for building such palpable chemistry…. Bomer’s stoic restraint proves his strongest attribute. Hawk, quite literally, is cleaner cut than a Kennedy (Bobby makes a brief appearance), and Bomer wears his classic Wasp exterior like a slightly too-snug Halloween costume. “True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

The delicious “Mary & George” may well serve up a feast of Emmy nominations. This limited series on Starz stars Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran). The Countess uses her son as a pawn to scheme her way to riches, titles, and influence in 1600s England.
The series, adapted by award-winning playwright D.C. Moore from Benjamin Woolley’s bestseller “The King’s Assassin,” is a sumptuous period drama. The show is in the same vein as Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Oscar-winning “The Favourite,” swapping out the usual stuffy nature of such fare for a raucous, romp through history.
Moore, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for “Still Alice,” is on reliably good form here. She chews up every scene and commands the screen with authority. Galitzine, meanwhile, proves he is more than just the most...

The 2011 film adaptation of David Nichols‘ novel “One Day” starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was met with decidedly average notices at best.
