This weeks 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Dan Stevens. Of course we all remember his first major foray onto our screens as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, and the untimely death of his character that had fans raging for his return.
But Hollywood called, and since then, Stevens has accrued a long list of credits, including Beauty and the Beast, I’m Your Man, Love, Death and Robots, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Welcome to Chippendales. Recently he voiced a character in the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron, and next up, his new film Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire will be in theaters March 29th.
In this episode, Stevens digs into his reasons for needing a Taylor Swift collab, why Elvis is top of his list of dream roles, and how shooting Godzilla x Kong in Australia came with plenty of real-live snakes and killer trees.

The first shot after the opening titles of Tilman Singer’s savvily conceived but undercooked Cuckoo is like a reverse angle of the opening shot of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Here, a family drives through beautiful but implicitly foreboding mountainous terrain. And we’re located in the cab of the car with Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), an angsty teen who’s been forced to relocate from her home in the U.S. to a relatively remote corner of the Bavarian Alps.
Steep, imposingly snow-capped, and dotted with romantic castles and high-end ski lodges, the Bavarian Alps are tourist magnets, and justifiably so. But this part of Germany was also a favorite of Hitler’s, and today it’s the heart of traditional conservativism in the country. Like Appalachia in the U.S., it’s a place a horror movie might take us to in search of scary people—except here...

With “Cuckoo,” German director Tilman Singer expands on the scope of his impressive 2018 debut (the demonic-possession-meets-therapeutic-improv exercise “Luz”) while retaining that film’s bird-flipping attitude toward unnecessary niceties like coherent plotting or narrative logic. Singer makes what ought to be his breakthrough with “Cuckoo,” an energetically outlandish fusion of stylish atmospherics, old-school reproductive horror and pro-switchblade advertorial. The profile of this highly enjoyable, unashamedly convoluted creepfest will be further raised by “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer’s terrific Final Girl performance and by Dan Stevens’ hilariously eccentric villain, the second recent showcase for Stevens’ excellent spoken German after Maria Schrader’s “I’m Your Man.” Few are the films and fewer are the actors who can get such sinister mileage out of a character’s insistently Teutonic, semi-sibilant mispronunciation of the name “Gretchen.”
Gretchen (Schafer), appears, initially, to be the cuckoo. She is sent to live with her estranged father Luis (Marton Csokas...

Ahead of its 39th edition, Poland’s Warsaw Film Festival is betting on timely topics.
“The role of filmmakers, and artists in general, is to react,” says festival director Stefan Laudyn.
“For years, we have been showing films that criticize the situation in various countries, not just in Poland. We try to avoid puff pieces.”
While there is space for “lighter topics” as well, supporting Ukraine – and Ukrainian filmmakers – remains one of the priorities.
“We initiated the first solidarity action with Ukraine back in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea, we also supported Oleg Sentsov. Last year, we featured the entire Ukrainian competition from Odesa International Film Festival, which couldn’t take place due to the war.”
This year, eight Ukrainian productions and co-productions will be shown at the fest. Including “Diagnosis: Dissent” by Denys Tarasov, about punitive psychiatry used by the Kgb, and Taras Dron’s “The Glass House,” where...

Mitski’s seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has arrived. Stream the album below. Update: To coincide with the album’s release, Mitski has also shared a new video for “My Love Mine All Mine.”
Spanning 11 tracks, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We features many of the things you would expect from a Mitski album, like production from longtime-collaborator, Patrick Hyland, thoughtful songwriting, and brilliant moments of catharsis. Yet, focusing on the inescapable contradiction of love and isolation, she reaches some of her most profound musings, with impactful arrangements to match the mood.
In his review, Consequence’s Jonah Krueger celebrated the project for being Mitski’s “most comforting, hopeful yet.” Explaining that she finds solace in the heartache of loss, Krueger writes that the overarching theme of the album endows the listener with invaluable emotional tools, and looks past sorrow to find strength.

Who shall we say is calling? On a new rendition of Leonard Cohen’s nearly half-century–old folk-rock classic “Who by Fire,” it’s Skinny Pelembe and Beth Orton. The duo’s breathy performance adds a sense of desperation and urgency to the track, which appeared on Cohen’s 1974 LP, New Skin for the Old Ceremony. There’s also a chilly element of mystery to the staggered way Orton and Skinny Pelemebe, whose real name is Doya Beardmore, build it out into shouting at the end.

“I don’t like my mind/I don’t like being left alone in a room,” Mitski sings on her seventh album, her voice honeyed and rich despite her distress. “Please don’t take … this job from me.” We could read this as your average American workaholic, consumed by the grind. But it’s hard not to hear those words as autobiographical — after all, this is the same woman who decided to quit music, then came back, drawn to it like the tides to the moon. As she told Rolling...

With last year’s Laurel Hell, Mitski elaborated on the eclectic, ’80s-influenced sounds of 2018’s Be the Cowboy, synthesizing the lessons she’d learned from her earlier work about multi-instrumental songwriting and thematic cohesiveness. “According to that pattern,” Mitski told Apple Music at the time, “the next thing I’ll do will be completely different.” Indeed, her seventh album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, delivers on that promise, adapting her poignant lyricism to the acoustic strings and traditionally rural setting of country music.
As always, Mitski’s music aches with longing, and by leaning into a bleak vision of the heartland, she unlocks a gothic sense of dread. “Bug Like an Angel” opens the album with the gory image of a bug stuck to the bottom of a glass. Accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, Mitski sounds like a lonesome country balladeer, or the drinker on the...

Days after she teased the news in a voice memo sent to fans, Mitski has officially announced that her seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, will be out September 15th via Dead Oceans. As a preview, she’s shared its lead single “Bug Like an Angel.”
The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, which Mitski describes in a press release as her “most American album,” pulls from a vast pool of influences, including spaghetti western soundtracks, Arthur Russell, Igor Stravinsky, and more. To help flesh it out, she employed a full orchestra and a 17-person choir, working again with her longtime producer Patrick Hyland.
“The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people,” Mitski adds of the album’s themes. “I wish I could leave behind all the love I have, after I die, so that I can shine all this goodness,...

The first time Rolling Stone profiled Wham!, the shiniest, prettiest UK pop duo of their day, in 1985, the boys bristled when the reporter asked a common question: What exactly did Andrew Ridgeley do? George Michael said, “He just plays the guitar and has a good time.” Since Wham! records had practically no guitar, fans had to assume that Andrew was having a very good time. But Ridgeley was more diplomatic. He said, “My role is everything people don’t see, because they’re not in pop bands.”

This review originally ran October 13, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival.
Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s explosive New York Times report on Harvey Weinstein’s decades-long abuse behind the scenes at Miramax and his own company broke Hollywood open, exposing a new generation of workplace tyrants and sex pests, and creating, hopefully, some social shifts for good.
Five years after the rise of the #MeToo hashtag and three years after the publication of Kantor and Twohey’s book, Hollywood seeks to tell the tale of its own reckoning in a film of the same, succinct title: “She Said.”
Director Maria Schrader offers a film that certainly represents a “Hollywoodization” of the otherwise tedious and tiresome events that occurred in order for Kantor and Twohey to get their witnesses to go on the record, complete with dramatic phone calls, door slams, screaming arguments.

When journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey published their first bombshell report on Harvey Weinstein in The New York Times in October 2017, the eventual Pulitzer Prize-winning expose included eight different accusers. Some of them were named (like actress Ashley Judd or former Miramax employee Lauren Madden), while others opted to tell their stories but to remain anonymous.
Navigating the comfort levels of each accuser when it came time to share their stories was key to Kantor and Twohey’s process. Five years later, as the story behind their investigation makes its way to the big screen in the form of Maria Schrader’s incendiary “She Said,” that same care and attention remains front and center.
So does the continued search for the truth. Like the women who inspired her film, the German director’s first English-language feature is rooted in a desire for veracity, done with the kind of thoughtfulness...

Harvey Weinstein was a monster. He was a sexual predator who used his position of power in Hollywood to harass and assault dozens of women. But there was also a system in place that shielded him from repercussions, one that relied on enablers and enforcers who protected Weinstein and allowed him to continue his pattern of exploitation. And there were also plenty of people who preferred to look the other way rather than acknowledge the possibility that Weinstein was a serial sexual abuser.
“She Said,” Maria Schrader’s taut new thriller, may be one of the most important movies to hit Hollywood in decades because it dares to ask about the entertainment business’ culpability in Weinstein’s crimes. And that doesn’t just mean the studio executives and publicists who did Weinstein’s dirty work or who opted to work with him in order to keep winning Oscars and reaping box office rewards.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Giovanni Pernice has shut down rumours of a rift with his celebrity partner Richie Anderson.
The Italian dancer and reigning Strictly champion hit the dance floor with the BBC Radio 2 presenter for the first time on Saturday (24 September). You can find out more about Anderson here.
The couple performed a lively Cha Cha Cha to “I’m Your Man” by Wham!, but subsequent tabloid reports had claimed that Pernice was growing “frustrated” with Anderson “talking instead of listening” during rehearsals.
Appearing on Strictly’s sister programme It Takes Two on Wednesday (28 September), Pernice was asked by host Janette Manrara how they were enjoying rehearsals.
“We’re having a good time, we’re definitely having a good time,” Pernice said. “Obviously, it’s a dance competition at the end of the day, so we have to learn something.”

The Locarno Film Festival is following the lead of A-list neighbor Berlin and going gender-neutral.
From 2023 on, Locarno’s acting honors will no longer be categorized according to gender — best actor and best actress — but be gender-neutral “best performance” and “best supporting performance” awards.
For the 76th edition of the Locarno Film Festival, set for August 2-12, 2023, the festival’s two main competitions, Concorso internazionale and Concorso Cineasti del presente, will each present two awards for the best performances.
Berlin was the first big film festival to take this step, last year handing out its first gender-neutral Silver Bears for best leading performance, which went to Maren Eggert for her starring role in Maria Schrader’s sci-fi screwball comedy I’m Your Man, and best supporting performance to Lilla Kizlinger for Bence Fliegauf’s Forest — I See You Everywhere. Dda is making a series of key hires and promotions. Ryan Langrehr recently joined the entertainment communications company as U.S. head of awards, based out of Los Angeles. He joins from Block-Korenbrot Public Relations and will work alongside Dda partner Dana Archer and awards strategist Mj Peckos, who formed an exclusive partnership with Dda in 2021 and collaborated on a slate of films in the international and documentary category. These included Spain’s “The Good Boss” and Germany’s “I’m Your Man,” both of which were shortlisted for international feature Oscars.
The Dda L.A. awards offering is a complement to the company’s existing U.K. awards business, which it says will offer studios and filmmakers a “cohesive strategy across both sides of the Atlantic.” The U.K. offering is led by Sam Ross in his newly upped role of director of awards, and his team works closely with Dda partner Neil Bhatt.

Netflix’s upcoming All Quiet On The Western Front has been selected to represent Germany in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. Directed by Edward Berger, the anti-war movie is a new take on the classic 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque which was also the source material for the eponymous 1930 Best Picture Oscar-winner.
The film tells the story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I. Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches.
This is the first German-language screen adaptation and stars Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch, Felix Kammerer and Sebastian Hülk. A production of Amusement Park Film for Netflix, it will world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival before heading to Zurich. Netflix will cooperate with distribution partner 24 Bilder for...

There’s something about Canadian writer/poet/singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen that seems to shine so brightly that people always want to approach his life from an angle and never succeed in getting very close. Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man, did have an extensive interview but was intercut it with a tribute concert while Marianne & Me: Words Of Love came at Cohen via his love for his Swedish muse Marianne Ihlen, with Nick Broomfield shoehorning himself into the film for good measure. Now it’s the turn of Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine, whose previous films include Ballets Russes, and who approach the musician largely from the perspective of his most famous song, Hallelujah. The end result could do with less tangent and more of the gent himself.
Things start well, with a decent potted history of how Cohen came to move from the written word to the sung and how his Jewish roots.

The foundation of the #MeToo movement is at the center of true story “She Said,” based on the New York Times exposé outing Harvey Weinstein’s decades of sexual abuse and assault.
Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan and Emmy nominee Zoe Kazan star as New York Times journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, respectively, in the drama, in theaters November 18. Based on the real-life story of breaking the #MeToo scandal, “She Said” is adapted from bestselling memoir “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement.” The film is described as not focusing on Harvey Weinstein or the scandal itself, but rather on the all-female group of journalists who faced intimidation and legal threats to publish a bombshell investigative report in October 2017.
