Wimsey is given the strange document found up in The Bell Tower by Hilary Thorpe, his aim to identify the mystery Traveller leads him to France, where he discovers the man was English, perhaps with a knowledge of the missing jewellery.
The mystery deepens, there is a definite sense of cleverness about the writing, it's a really tangled story, with plenty of subplots, lots of intrigue, and some genuinely interesting characters.
Is this the best of The Wimsey stories? I think so.
Donald Eccles is a delight as The Vicar, he's so wonderfully enthusiastic and jolly, great scenes between him and Carmichael.
Very, very good, 9/10.
