Fans of the fresh prince, with open minds, will enjoy the throw back and fun nods to the original. Very keen to see where this goes, the foundation it is set on is good. They lean into the dramatics a little too much. But with some growth, this could be really good.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was a hit comedy show that turned rapper Will Smith to a knockout television and movie star.
The first step to an eventual Oscar win.
I watched the Fresh Prince when I was at university. Just how well it's endured. My children watch the repeats.
Bel Air is the dark reimagining as a drama and not a comedy.
The first episode fleshes out the events that took Will Smith, a promising student from West Philly into Bel Air and live with his rich uncle and aunt. A wealthy lawyer who plans to run for DA.
This is gritty and grimy opener. Will gets involved in gun violence and is arrested. Uncle Phil pulls some string to get him out to California, knowing the gang members are waiting for Will back home.
Getting used to Bel Air life is not going to be busy. Cousin Carlton is a coke head and trying too hard to please his white friends. Will is also getting on with Carlton's ex.
This modern update is really a new show that uses the basic premise of Fresh Prince.
Fans of the original will be disappointed. It is certainly not a comedy and also not a hybrid teen drama.
It is too early to judge just how well it is developed. Jabari Banks makes a good initial impression.

This is a remake that deserves all the attention! I know there was a lot of hesitancy to get behind it by viewers because of constant comparisons to the original, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But this show is so GOOD! It's nostalgic and yet new and trendy and engaging.
I think the casting was considerate. I love seeing new, fresh actors and actresses working.
It's good to see more of the backstory of Will. We got a quick version in the original series but this really brings it all home.
The music selections are A1! I think it's definitely worth chiming in.

Forget the Fresh Price original series

Before you watch this you need to forget the original Fresh Prince of Bel Air series with Will Smith, this is a hard hitting reboot with a lot more serious storyline, this is a brilliant reboot/retelling of the story of a troubled young man growing up in a modern world learning about the trials of life having been sent to his aunt & uncles in LA has to learn to deal with life in a new school & city where at first he isn't welcome by his cousin Carlton & he doesn't want to be their as he wants to be back at home in Philadelphia where he will be in danger.

From the concept trailer 2 years ago to this tv production. I must say I'm left very much in awe and intrigued by it will all unfold as a drama. When you watch this show it needs to be viewed for what it is. It's not a reboot, revival or remake. It's a re-imagination and a retelling of am Will's story. The names and characteristics of the people may be the same however the story unfolds in a very different way. It's not a 20-30min comedy with some drama. It's a drama with some comedy elements and very reflective of today's issues.

Having watched episode one ......
We all loved the original. The loving warmth and humour of the Banks family, the feel-good optimism of the shows were just perfect escapism.
If this is what you expect from the remake you're going to be very disappointed.
There's nothing warm or funny about this Banks family and you won't get escapism you will get a show portraying the sort of wealth unobtainable by most and wonder what the point is.
I'll give another episode or two a chance but so far it seems like a cold modern show for a cold modern world.
