Woody Harrelson Talks The Messenger, 2012, and Defendor

13 November 2009 2:41 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Woody Harrelson already scored a hit this year with Zombieland, but this weekend sees two more Harrelson movies open: 2012 and The Messenger. In 2012, Harrelson plays the conspiracy theorist and pirate radio host Charlie Frost, who is closer to Harrelson's own personality — a well-known environmental activist and a hemp-loving pacifist — than the role of Army casualty-notification officer Capt. Tony Stone in writer-director Oren Moverman 's The Messenger. Harrelson told THR that playing a soldier changed his view on them entirely.

The one thing that my whole ideology lacked was the compassion for the soldier, and now that's been taken care of. I have a great deal of respect for these people who go over there and risk their lives every day for very little money just because of the love for their country, so I've come to really revere the soldier. I feel like the movie is really a journey you take with your heart, »

'Hack/Slash' Producers Say Casting Announcement Is Coming 'Pretty Soon'

20 October 2009 1:44 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Not long ago, a little movie called "Eve" was announced with eerie similarities to "Hack/Slash," the Devil's Due Publishing series created by Tim Seeley. While some fans were worried that "Eve" would derail development on a "Hack/Slash" movie, Seeley and the "Eve" helmer reconciled their differences to keep "Hack/Slash" on track.

Now, it sounds like things are really on track for the comic book adaptation, as Collider recently had the opportunity to speak with "Hack/Slash" producers Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter at this weekend's 2009 Scream Awards.

While details are currently being kept under wraps, Alter reaffirmed that a director has been chosen for "Hack/Slash" with other announcements soon to follow.

"We have an exciting director, a new director named Fredrick Bond," said Alter. "It's going to start [production] early next year."

Last we'd heard, "Hack/Slash" was slated for a winter of 2009 start date, but a »

Woody Harrelson On 'Defendor' And His Comic Book History (Or Lack Thereof)

6 October 2009 11:08 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In "Defendor," Woody Harrelson plays a crime-fighting hero who's a little off the beaten path—and possibly a few gadgets short of a utility belt. Last month, we brought you the news that the film—which stars Harrelson and "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" actress Kat Dennings—had been picked up by Sony Pictures, so you might not have to leap tall buildings to find a theater showing it.

When we caught up with Harrelson at the Toronto International Film Festival, we had to ask him about the offbeat superhero tale, and whether he'd had any comic book history to draw from when playing main character Arthur Poppington.

"I'm always playing Arthur," said Harrelson when asked if he approached the film as if he was playing two roles, Arthur and his alter ego, Defendor. "[But] it's Arthur's sensibility of what a superhero is—his take on how a superhero would talk »

Kat Dennings for Hack/Slash ?

6 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

There's nothing worse than "what if" articles. MTV thrives on 'em. Generating news from possible scenarios like "what if so-and-so played this character?" Or, "would so-and-so be up for a sequel?" Today, however, I'll play along with their antics. MTV sat down with actress Kat Dennings to discuss her latest turn in Defendor , starring Woody Harrelson. At the end of their chat with her, the topic of female comic book characters came up and Dennings revealed she was a fan of Cassie Hack from the Devil's Due book "Hack/Slash." Hack/Slash , a feature film, has been in development for a few years at Rogue Pictures with Fredrik Bond attached to direct. Dennings would make a perfect Hack, a misfit gal who slays slashers across the country... »

Kat Dennings Wants 'Hack/Slash' Movie, Makes Pitch For Comic Book Movie Role

5 October 2009 12:31 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" actress Kat Dennings isn't the first name you'd associate with comic book movies, but when we had the chance to sit down with her during the Toronto International Film Festival, she was quick to name-drop an adaptation she'd like to bring to the big screen.

In town to discuss her upcoming, pseudo-superhero movie "Defendor" with Woody Harrelson, Dennings called out action-horror series "Hack/Slash" when asked if there were any books she'd like to play a role in adapting.

"You know who's a cool girl comic book thing?" said Dennings. "Hack/Slash!"

Last we heard from the "Hack/Slash" front, commercial director Fredrik Bond had taken over directing duties on the film, replacing Todd Lincoln. The Devil's Due Publishing series is currently in development with Rogue Pictures, the Relativity Media subsidiary responsible for "Shaun of the Dead" and "Doomsday."

Fantastic Fest: And the Hits Keep Coming...

2 October 2009 7:33 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

"'Ninja Assassin 2' will be in 3D with Sprayarama," director James McTeigue joked before the premiere of the first and so far only "Ninja Assassin" at the Alamo Drafthouse on Tuesday. And there were copious amounts of blood sputtered in the film that followed, a gory but too often creatively bloodless affair that stars Korean pop star Rain as Raizo, a warrior trained from birth in the ninja way before turning against his clan after the death of a female colleague.

How you'll feel about "Ninja Assassin" will depend on your inherent interest in the masked men (and in this equal opportunity film, women) -- throwing stars and bone-crushing punches can atone for cheesy dialogue, but McTeigue makes the curious decision to shoot most of the action in the dark, and the performances are half-hearted. (While a physical marvel, Rain is hamstrung by having to speak in English, though »

Director Already Planning 'Defendor' Sequel

27 September 2009 7:19 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The Woody Harrelson civilian superhero movie, Defendor, fared very well this month at the Toronto Film Festival, and was picked up shortly thereafter by Sony for a yet-to-be-announced Us release. Now, The Nightly Gamer reports a sequel is already being planned.

There's a lot of that going around these days, where movies with smaller budgets like The Hangover and Kick-Ass start building buzz for part two before the first film is even released. But director Peter Stebbings seems to have a sequel well in mind already, and he discussed the possibility of keeping the story going at Cinefest in Sudbury, Ontario. »

Defendor doesn.t even have a release date and director Peter Stebbings is already talking sequels. According to The Nightly Gamer, Defendor screened as part of Cinefest this afternoon in Sudbury, Ontario. Following the film Stebbings conducted a Q & A session. One audience member asked Stebbings what other projects he.s got coming up and his reply suggested another Defendor movie. The film, which he.d like to be called Defendors, wouldn.t star Woody Harrelson but a group of other guys who idolize his character. Defendor is about Arthur Poppington (Harrelson), a construction worker who.s responsible for holding up traffic signs by day and fighting crime as Defendor by night. Defendor gets in trouble when he beats up an undercover cop when he catches him abusing a prostitute named Kat (Kat Dennings). 'Ninja Turtles' Actor Elias Koteas Isn't In 'Green Lantern' (Even If Wikipedia Says He Is)

24 September 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Actor Elias Koteas might be best-known to Splash Page readers for his role as Casey Jones in the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies, but when we were getting ready to speak to him about his upcoming film "Defendor" with Woody Harrelson, we noticed an interesting entry in his online resume. According to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source of information, we know), Koteas has a role in the live-action "Green Lantern" movie scheduled for release in 2011.

According to Koteas, the "Green Lantern" role is news to him.

"Am I in the movie?" asked Koteas when MTV Movies Editor Joshua Horowitz brought up the project's presence on his wiki-based resume.

After confirming that he hasn't heard a thing about the film, Koteas said that doesn't mean he wouldn't be willing to join the cast alongside star Ryan Reynolds.

"Sure, the more the better. I need the work," he laughed, adding, "Maybe they're confusing me with someone. »

Niagara Falls Hosting Big Stars This Fall, Somehow

23 September 2009 9:33 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When you think of a first-time filmmaker making a movie in his hometown of Niagara Falls, you think of wrangling all your friends to be extras, scrounging together enough money for digital tape, and begging the financing from your parents. But Jonathan Sobol has skipped all those steps, instead casting the likes of Dennis Hopper and J.K. Simmons in his directorial debut A Beginner's Guide to Endings, and getting Defendor director Nicholas Tabarrok to produce it. In addition to Hopper and Simmons, THR is reporting that Battlestar Galactica hottie Tricia Helfer and Scott Caan have also joined hte cast. Caan will play one of a trio of brothers who somehow learn that they only have a few days left to live, and go about reversing all their mistakes. Hopper and Simmons play the uncle and father, respectively, with Helfer as Caan's character's girlfriend. »

Epic New Batch of Photos from Roland Emmerich's 2012

22 September 2009 5:48 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Why haven't we seen another trailer for this? That Japanese one was cool, but only one full trailer? A big batch of new photos from Roland Emmerich's 2012 have popped up in the UK on the blog Hey U Guys. There are some new shots of Danny Glover as the President as well as John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Amanda Peet, and Thandie Newton. I've also been saying that Harrelson has been having a fantastic year, with Zombieland and Defendor so far, but I'm not so sure if that'll hold up after 2012. His hippie nature-loving weatherman character in this just looks way too kooky and not at all fun. Anyway, check these out! An academic researcher leads a group of people in a fight to counteract the apocalyptic events that were predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar. Cast includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, & Chiwetel Ejiofor. 2012 is directed and co-written by ... »

Toronto Video Reviews: Defendor & Capitalism: A Love Story

21 September 2009 11:37 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Just call me... Defendor!" Although the Toronto Film Festival has wrapped up, our coverage isn't entirely finished just yet. A few days ago Peter from SlashFilm and I decided to just recorded a video on the streets of Toronto talking about our thoughts on both Peter Stebbings' Defendor and Michael Moore's new doc Capitalism: A Love Story. Not only was it just easier to record all this, but now you get to hear both perspectives on these two films. It's a fun little video that's worth checking out, especially if you want to hear more about either of those films. So without further ado, drop what you're doing and fire this video up! My basic opinion on both films is that I liked them quite a bit. Defendor is an incredibly fun low-budget superhero comedy with a great lead performance from Woody Harrelson. It's completely entertaining but not »

Sony Picks Up Defendor For Distribution

17 September 2009 10:05 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Booya! Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to distribute the Woody Harrelson superhero comedy Defendor. Apparently there was a large bidding war among various distributors to acquire the rights after the movie had its world premiere Monday night at Tiff, with The Weinstein Co. being one of the main contenders. Sony has bought the rights for all of the U.S. and for most of Europe, Asia and Latin America. The only distributor that had a deal before Monday were Alliance Films which bought the rights for distribution in Canada as a part of the movie's method for financing the production. It seems like they struck a good deal there, as the movie's foreign sales agent told Variety that they took a gamble by not pre-selling the rights and that it paid off with the film more or less selling out within five hours. That gamble is something that »

Greg’s 2009 Tiff Report: Day 5

17 September 2009 12:09 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I was about a foot away from certain death yesterday. This is what is called a hook. Right now, one of two things is crossing your mind. 1) Oh my God! How did Greg almost die? Or 2) What idiot fucked up Greg's death? Read on to find out. It's my busiest day in Toronto as far as movies go, so I grab some coffee and head downtown. There's this very cool cafe right across where I'm staying in Toronto that makes a very decent cup of coffee. They also crank Ccr over the speakers which it makes that much more cool. I was standing in line and this dude comes up and puts his hand on my chest and says "I like your shirt." It is an awesome shirt, but I think the touching thing was kind of odd. I said thanks and ordered my coffee and that was that. Who does that? »

Woody Harrelson-Starring Superhero Flick 'Defendor' Picked Up By Sony

17 September 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Woody Harrelson is about to try his hand against a pack of vicious flesh-eaters in "Zombieland," but that's not the only tremendous feat the actor is facing down -- he's also set to don the tights in superhero flick "Defendor."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group is in final negotiations to acquire the distribution rights for the movie, which recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sony would own the worldwide rights to the film in all territories except Canada, where the movie is being released by Alliance. No release date is set.

In "Defendor," Woody Harrelson stars as Arthur Poppington, an everyday man with one unusual difference: he thinks he's a superhero by the name of Defendor. As this masked vigilante -- who could clearly use a few fashion tips from Superman's stylist -- Poppington battles criminals on a quest to take down his arch enemy, »

‘Defendor’ And ‘Valhalla Rising’ Snag Studio Deals

It seems that the recent “showdown” over the Colin Firth drama, A Single Man, at the Toronto International Film Festival has sparked more dealmaking (as predicted). Both the Woody Harrelson “superhero” flick, Defendor, and the Viking film, Valhalla Rising, have both had their rights acquired by major studios.

Defendor

Sony is the one who’s acquired the rights to Peter Stebbings’ directorial debut, Defendor, which stars Woody Harrelsen as a man who thinks he’s a superhero out to fight crime, with his mission being to take down the villain Captain Industry (who may or may not exist). The film co-stars Kat Dennings, Sandra Oh, Lisa Oh and Elias Koteas. For a seven figure sum, Sony has bought all of the distribution rights for the U.S., as well as most of Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Sony Picks Up Woody Harrelson's Defendor

Actor Woody Harrelson's independent "dramedy" about a wannabe superhero, Defendor, was a relatively unknown production until a teaser trailer was released in advance of the Toronto Film Festival. The clip generated considerable buzz on the Internet and was well-received in Toronto. Now it appears the film will get the kind of wide release that it will need to compete at the box office.

According to THR, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group is in final negotiations to purchase the worldwide release rights to Defendor, with the single exception being Canada, where Alliance will be releasing the movie. Defendor is the directorial debut of actor Peter Stebbings and also stars Kat Dennings, Sandra Oh, and Elias Koteas.
