... and what else would I expect when John returns from vacation to find Justice Ginsburg deceased and the GOP making plans for her replacement while her body is still warm. But there is no time. They are making a last stand and, hypocrisy be darned, they are going to install a female justice with a stellar personal reputation that should sail through confirmation that will have her seat for 40 years.
It's not that John raises any new ideas here as a remedy in case the Democrats take the Senate, the House, and the Presidency - expanding the Supreme Court, adding states (Puerto Rico and DC) , using the compact to eliminate the electoral college without the tedious exercise of changing the Constitution. He does put them all into one well formed presentation though. But he doesn't ever take stock of how extreme this might seem to even moderates. Why would somebody in Colorado want their state's electors to go to whatever California voted for? Couldn't adding seats to the Supreme Court turn into an arms race with the GOP? Could there be 175 Supreme Court justices by the turn of the century? Does Puerto Rico even WANT to be a state? They had only one referendum that ever said that they did out of a bunch of such votes.
It's like in the old TV show "The Flintstones". If Fred says he wants to start a new business and intends to do so on nights and weekends in the garage while holding his day job, Wilma would be OK with that. However, if Fred Flintstone said he was quitting his job and charging 40K to their credit cards to start a new business, Wilma would be alarmed to say the least. You don't want to scare the electorate, especially when the GOP is so good at controlling the narrative. Adding seats to the SC would quickly become "court packing". How many Democrats today call the ACA "Obamacare" when that is the name the GOP came up with?
Great stunt at the end for getting people to fill out the census if they hadn't already done so. So John is rested and his sense of mischief is back on the job. Don't get the idea I disagree with John on what he said this week. He does a better job of communicating important points than any so called TV journalist I have recently seen.
