This is another edition of Short Starts, where we present a weekly short film(s) from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career. Even though he’s only in the film for a few minutes, Adam Driver is one of the most talked-about actors in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. Of course he is, because when he’s on screen you can’t look at anything else. It’s that combination of rugged handsomeness and gigantic freakishness that captures your attention, and a lot of it has to do with our familiarity with him being almost solely from his role on Girls. This year he also got to break out a little more with Frances Ha, but he’s still fairly new to acting, having been a United States Marine just over a decade ago. Really, he’s had a fast rise to a scene stealing bit part in a Best Picture hopeful (and...

Every year, American broadcast networks produce dozens of pilots, but only order a bunch of them as a weekly series. Only a few of those new shows then actually become a success and survive for multiple years. Last week the networks presented their new shows to advertisers, praising even their worst new shows as shows with the “highest testing results ever, as something you haven’t seen before, as something relatable and unique, as something that is character-based and certainly going to strike a chord with viewers”. Since most new shows fail and only few shows succeed, advertisers surely must have become cynical and sceptical over the years, but at the same time there is always hope that the networks have a hit series hidden among their freshmen crops that offers the greatest opportunity for advertising. What follows is a Top 10 list that includes the most promising looking new network offerings,...

The CW is sticking to its guns. With a combined focus on supernatural-themed series and the younger female demographic, the network announced a host of new shows at its upfront presentation on Thursday morning, while also pumping up the network TV return of two stars: former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and “The Oc’s” Rachel Bilson.
CW will air the new Gellar vehicle, “The Ringer,” on Tuesday nights, following the reboot of “90210,” which was renewed for a fourth season.
According to press notes, “The Ringer” follows a woman on the run, played by Gellar, who assumes her wealthier sister’s identity, but soon discovers that her sister’s life is just as dangerous as her own. CBS was originally attached to the series, but network executives thought it was a better fit for its sister network, the CW.

We've already pointed out like thrice this week that it's a big week for '90s comebacks, and here's another case: Sarah Michelle Gellar, who hit her peak at around 1998 (though the shelved Kathryn Bigelow HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladys will no doubt end up a cult Gellar treasure), is pulling a Grindhouse.
In league with this year's epic zombie saturation (seriously, trend = ending, guys.) Call Of Duty: Black Ops Escalation is a violent zombie video game. This add-on for the latest version of Call Of Duty is a real doozie. Up there with the greatest drive-in movies favored by Qt, it features Gellar, Danny Trejo, Robert Englund and Michael Rooker as zombie killers-- and, in a cute homage, genre master George Romero as the chief zombie.

“Ringer” stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (”Buffy The Vampire Slayer”) as a troubled young woman named Bridget , who, while on the run from the mob, hides out by inhabiting the life of her wealthy twin sister Siobhan, until she learns that her twin’s life has a bounty on it as well. If picked up, “Ringer” would mark Gellar’s first return to television since Buffy has ended. She previously starred in the rejected HBO pilot “The Wonderful Maladys”.
According to Deadline Hollywood , Carbonell is set to play an FBI agent who is in charge of keeping Gellar’s character safe, so she can testify against the mob. When she goes on the run, he tracks her down and only finds her “sister”.

It’s probably too early to get excited about it, since the pilot has not been picked up to series yet and we therefore don’t know if the pilot is actually going to series. In 2008 Sarah Michelle Gellar had already tried to return to television with an HBO pilot called “The Wonderful Maladys”, but HBO ultimately rejected to broadcast the show and Gellar instead focused on motherhood for a while.
Gellar will play Bridget Cafferty, a recovering addict who is on the run, after she decided not to testify against a dangerous murderer in court. She ultimately turns to her estranged twin sister Siobhan for help and ends up taking on her sister’s identity, when Siobhan dies unexpectedly. Soon however Bridget realizes that her sister’s life is just as complicated as hers and she will have all kinds of trouble to fool the people in Siobhan’s...

The networks have been on a pilot-greenlighting tear lately. But which possible show has the potential to be a gem of the 2011-12 season? We’ll go out on a limb here: CBS’ in-the-works thriller Ringer, which—should the pilot get the pickup to series during May’s network upfronts—would mark the much-anticipated return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar to regular series television. Granted, Gellar acolytes have been titillated by her possible return before with HBO’s The Wonderful Maladys, only to have the pilot never make it to series. But alas, the potential seems to be there with Ringer.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was born for episodic television (sorry, Sarah Michelle Gellar's movie career). Since her most famous role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, Gellar has spent the ensuing years starring in a few roles that didn't really do much to showcase her talent. And the pilot she starred in in 2008, called The Wonderful Maladys, failed to get a pick-up from HBO.
But that may soon change. Because CBS has ordered a pilot for a new show called Ringer, which is about "a troubled young lass on the run from the mob. She assumes the life of her wealthy twin sister, only to find out that said sibling has a bounty on her head as well". Gellar is set to play the troubled young lass and the sister as double-duty on the new show, according to Vulture.

After HBO passed last year on the promising-sounding Sarah Michelle Gellar/Adam Scott family drama The Wonderful Maladys, centered around a neurotic New York clan, you'd think people would get the idea that the network's looking for some new stuff.
But fresh off her Oscar win for Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow's first major project was a show called The Miraculous Year, starring Hope Davis, Frank Langella, Patti Lupone, and Susan Sarandon with a similar feel, centered around a high-powered (albeit less f*ckable, unless you have a thing for baby boomers) city family.

Steering clear of career duties as she gets used to motherhood, Miss Gellar most recently worked on a new show called "The Wonderful Maladys".
Unfortunately, the pilot wasn't picked up by HBO, as the Gotham series following the dysfunctional lives of three adult siblings who lost their parents at a young age has since been put on the back-burner.

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. Hollywood Reporter's Nellie Andreeva is reporting that Southland executive producer John Wells has called two of the series' actors to tell them that he is currently in talks with two networks about finding Southland a new home. However, the new network won't be producing any new episodes for the time being and will reair the seven episodes from the series' freshman season and the six unaired produced episodes from Season Two as a thirteen-episode cycle. (Hollywood Reporter) Many viewers have wondered about the fate of Sarah Michelle Gellar's HBO dramedy pilot The Wonderful Maladys, which filmed in May and then promptly fell off the radar. Rumors are swirling that the project has failed to garner a series order from the pay cabler, with several people involved with the production--including co-star Nate Corrdry and director Alan Taylor--revealing on Facebook that the production won't be moving ahead.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's personal life is going swimmingly—her daughter Charlotte was born last month—but her career has been seemingly trapped in professional purgatory for nearly a decade now. Smg was supposed to break out of those doldrums in 2010 with the premiere of a sophisticated new family comedy on HBO, but that prospect is now looking dim. The pilot for the series in question, The Wonderful Maladys, about a family of eccentric geniuses not unlike the Royal Tenenbaums or J.D. Salinger's Glass family, was filmed in May, and there was every hope that after Smg wrapped her maternity leave this fall, production would begin on Buffy's return to series television. So why...
