Selecting Joan Collins in the role of Ruth Van Rydock was extremely disappointing. I found this episode difficult to enjoy, at the beginning, there was something stilted about the flow of the direction and overall production. Joan Collins was a total annoyance - over acting. Surely there were far better suited actresses available within Britain. The selection reminded me of the "Mirror Crack'd with Elizabeth Taylor - why! All the other casting was excellent and the storyline honored the novel.
Julia McKenzie has, like her predecessors, has made her mark on Jane Marple. In the first episode of this series, A Pocket Full of Rye, Jane Marple was more in the background, however the character has developed over the remaining three episodes - she is not intrusive however you "know she's there - doing the "old lady" thing - just talking to people! Joan Hickson was excellent and I could not fault her adaptation, Geraldie McEwin was excellent and brought other qualities to the character that, whilst not actually true to the novels, made the character more youthful and a touch of comedy.
Hopefully another series will be developed and produced in the new year.
