Who on earth needs 'influencers'???
DoctorStrabismus21 October 2022
Another very good tight plot, which kept us guessing right up to the end.

Also a great critique on the absolute vacuity of our 21st century mobile-phone-obsessed society, where someone utterly devoid of all talent can make themselves an 'influencer'. And people actually follow them, and believe the rubbish they spout! It has almost become a religion - maybe it makes about as much sense.

McDonald's respect for Dodds simply grows and grows, and that's a magnificent part of the series.

We have a lot of confusion of where this fits in the series, and how the police boss changes both face and gender. Maybe all will soon be revealed.

8/10.

First to gel.

This is a series that hasn't really grabbed me, but I kept watching in the hope it would, and with this latest episode, it finally did.

This was a funny, entertaining and intriguing couple of hours, and I didn't see the twist coming at all.

Entertaining
coltras353 July 2022
Social media influencer Rose Boleyn checks into Bath's exclusive Ford & Flynn clinic for a nose job, but the routine procedure goes horribly wrong and she dies on the operating table. McDonald and Dodds must separate the fact from the fiction as they try to discover whether Rose's life was really as glamorous as it looked.

Entertaining mystery with some quirky characters , and an above average storyline. It's sort of a locked room mystery, the murder confined to one area with just a number of suspects, with the likelihood of them committing the ghastly act a little difficult as they were around the operating table. Of course, the Anaesthetist doctor is the first one to be suspected of the murder.

My favorite so far!

Warning: Spoilers
Apparently I saw the original version of this episode, as the season two finale and with James Murray. I feel badly for those who don't get to see this because he's so good chewing the scenery as the horrible boss. I'm sad to hear this was his last episode. And it was so perfect that it got to feature his real life wife who was similarly being the most delightful, over the top villain that I've seen in a long time. She might as well have been a Bond villain, the way she manipulated everyone around her, including McDonald. As the episode went along, each scene with her got hammier and her actions more over the top. It's a shame her character was a one off. She would be perfect on some soap like Dynasty.

The mystery was pretty obvious. The dog was plainly running around when it did for a reason. Rose's video claiming twice that Al was after her was too badly acted (on purpose). And then when the stalker fan went missing, it made it clear. But to be honest, I didn't even care much about the mystery since it was just a device on which to hang all the really good stuff.

This was definitely my favorite episode of both seasons. It felt like the writers finally found the direction for the show in that it was so hilarious, apart from the whole murder thing. I loved all the little extra business that was going on on the side, such as Houseman doing his best to be an evil mentor to McDonald. My favorite was their scene by the candy machine. Then there's the crush Darren has on Milena and whether she feels the same way. There was the completely, amazingly loony Nurse Penny. I'd love to know how much of that was in the script versus it just being that actress who decided to steal the show with her own ideas. O. M. G. Finally there was the little scene where Mariel so easily seduced the judge while playing golf. I almost forgot about it until the judge laid into Al in court. This whole script was hysterical and well crafted. However, I did still want to be sure Spike actually got to end up with Al at the end or did he get Fluffy.

On top of that all that, we got Dodd befriending McDonald's boyfriend when she was actually trying to get info on him instead. That was so cute. I did love how he didn't play the bumbling fool for once. His character and status are already established now so the writers no long need to make him look so bumbling all the time. I loved his scene at the memorial service when Dodds said all the girls must be from the future. It was funny, plus I appreciated the non-cynical take on that culture. The writers could have taken the same hack view as most other shows but they didn't. They did show how that life can be completely faked right down to the name and nationality of a person. But an online community could also could be sincere. I liked how Dodds could look at them objectively.

Finally, there was the scene at the very end where M&D both bonded a little deeper, sharing a moment, which was so touching. Followed by that gorgeous drone shot pulling far over the city and the river. So perfect.

Alway intriguing
BILLYBOY-1018 October 2021
I like this series and this particular episode is well written, with lots of twists along the way keeping you on your toes all along to the very clever conclusion. My only criticism however is the very annoying background music starting with the way too loud beginning song and then all along loud and overwhelming music interludes and crashing noise throughout. It is not only unnecessary it is distracting from the goings on and should have been eliminated altogether. Nice production, direction and super acting but again, get rid of the annoying music track.

Fabulous
lisbethinsydney23 July 2023
Bordering on pure camp, this episode of McDonald & Dodds is great fun - from the snarky social media to the misogynist lap dog and bitching cosmetic surgeon couple. Sarah Parish chews the scenery as the ambitious, soon-to-be-divorced consultant surgeon and wannabe karaoke star. The murder plot has plenty of twists, false leads and digs from Houseman for McDonald to weather before she and Dodds crack the mystery with their usual attention to crucial detail. A lovely turn from Emily Joyce as Diane, the husband's divorce lawyer, is a bonus as is the nurse with the distinctive vintage fashion sense. McDonald and Dodds - or Dudes as he gets called in this episode - continue to delight. One of my favourite episodes, watched more than a few times. Shows as good as this are hard to come by!

A real dip in quality.
Sleepin_Dragon3 July 2022
Social Media influencer and vlogger Rose Boleyn is killed whilst receiving cosmetic surgery at an exclusive clinic.

I can see why they plonked this in the middle of the series, and not at the start, the first two episodes of this run have both been of a very high standard, this felt very much like an earlier episode.

I was curious to see how they'd deal with James Murray's scenes, it appears that they've just re-shot them with Claire Skinner, she's doing a good job, she plays the part of the boss well.

Sadly, I thought this was pretty poor, it felt like the brand of tv that was exclusive to millennials only, anyone over the age of 25 would be better off checking other channels.

The character of Rose was very hard to like, and impossible to relate to, unless you tell into that bracket.

Sarah Parish played the part of the conniving surgeon very well, fair to say she's not a stranger to procedures herself, she was well cast, but dare I say she was too good for tatt like this.

Hopefully next week will see a return to the quality of the third Series, I struggled with this, 5/10.

Repeat Episode from Last Year
dlmvegas4 July 2022
This episode was shown last year in Season 2 as episode 3. British TV needs to get their act together. Don't show a repeat as if it's a new episode ! ! !

Guess it's no worse than American TV with all their LGBTQ garbage in their episodes.

Poor episode
lynneshinn3 July 2022
This was a poor episode in an otherwise enjoyable series. Sarah Parrish was overacting to an embarrassing degree. The two lead actors did well with a weak storyline but the rest of the cast struggled.

Very poor TV
samlong-5171015 May 2022
This started out okay but soon became an embarrassing piece of rubbish. The acting was ok but the screen writing was dreadful to say the least, such a shame for excellent actors. The story lines were believable until the influencer and went downhill fast.

Sorry but can't recommend this dribble.

The War of Rose
Prismark1018 July 2022
Rose Boleyn is a social influencer who dies in the middle of a cosmetic surgery procedure.

It seems her heart gave way but the coroner suspects foul play.

The clinic is owned by Al and Mariel who are going through a messy divorce.

The set up looked a lot like the earlier episode A Billion Beats from series 3 where the racing car driver was murdered in the pit lane.

In fact this is a holdover episode from series 2 with scenes featuring the previous police boss reshot with Claire Skinner.

As a murder mystery it was alright as everyone in the surgery is a suspect. The twist was hard to take.

It was overlong and the warring scenes between Al and Mariel started to become infuriating. It really made the story drag.

Just how much did they re-shoot for Series 3?
BillontheCorner20 July 2022
Very confusing to have DC Craig (the dozy Bristolian in Series 2) and DC Malik (his sharp-suited replacement for Series 3) appearing in consecutive scenes, not to mention other walk-ons in the "team" briefings! Perhaps Lily Sacofsky's other filming commitments explain why she wasn't given such clever observations to make in "true" Series 3, and thus didn't need a dim-sounding colleague to highlight her ability, but it's a shame that we have lost the only genuine West Country accent. Implausible story, but the exchanges about the two-hour gas boiler repair were entertaining.
