- Gita Chandra is working late at her flower shop, Bloomin' Lovely. She tells Rani and Haresh over the phone that she has an emergency order from a high paying client. After she hangs up, the client in question arrives with the check for the work. Suddenly, the client knocks Gita unconscious using a sonic ring device, and we see that the client is in fact Mrs. Wormwood.
That night, Luke Smith is having vivid nightmares of when he was first set loose by Maria at the Bane's factory, specifically about Mrs. Wormwood and her threats to destroy humanity. When he wakes in a cold sweat, he sees his creator in the darkness and hears her call him by his name. When he turns on the light however, she is gone.
He tells Sarah Jane about this, and she assures him it was only a dream, as Mrs. Wormwood was killed when the factory was destroyed, and couldn't know his name since he was given it after their encounter with her. Luke points out that he has never dreamed before. Rani arrives distraught, and tells Sarah Jane that her mother has gone missing. She and Haresh fill them in about the late night job she was doing. Sarah Jane, Luke, Clyde, and Rani go to Bloomin' Lovely to investigate, and Sarah Jane's watch confirms there was an alien present. Luke finds the check, signed Mrs. Wormwood. They take it back to the attic and have Mr. Smith analyze it, and he finds a coded address. Sarah Jane orders Luke to stay behind in case Mrs. Wormwood is after her "Archetype", but Rani insists on going with her to find her mum.
They arrive at the address, an abandoned factory, as Sarah Jane explains to Rani about their previous run-in with the Bane. They find Gita in a trance state inside, and Mrs. Wormwood reveals herself. After some initial banter, She tells Sarah Jane that she only took Gita to get her attention and ask for her help. Just then, the Bane attack them all. They make it out using Mrs. Wormwood's ring weapon to stun or kill them. Since Wormwood was in charge of the Bubble Shock scheme and it's failure at the hands of Sarah and the children, the Bane blame her for the death of the Bane Mother, but the true reason they are hunting her is because she is trying to stop them from taking over the galaxy.
The whole group make it back to Bannerman Road, where Mrs. Wormwood lifts Gita's trance. Rani tells her that she has been sleepwalking, and takes her home. Luke is shocked to see Mrs. Wormwood at the door, but Sarah Jane tells him and Clyde she is there for their help. When Rani returns, Mrs. Wormwood explains her situation. The Bane are looking for the remnants of an ancient creature with tremendous power named Horath. Horath could all but control reality itself, but when he was deposed it was found he could not be killed, so they separated his consciousness from his body. The consciousness has already been found by an agent of the Bane, but the body is located somewhere on Earth. They have to find it before the Bane resurrect the evil alien. The only known artifact with a connection to Horath on Earth is the Tunguska Scroll, which is locked away in a UNIT facility known as the Black Archive. Sarah Jane has Mr. Smith contain Mrs. Wormwood in the attic while she goes to the Black Archive. Unfortunately, Sarah Jane worries that if she goes to UNIT directly, they will only grow suspicious and possibly target Luke as an alien byproduct. For the sake of his safety, she leaves him and Clyde at the house and asks him not to go near Wormwood.
She and Rani visit the home of Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who is currently attempting to dismiss a younger officer by the name of Major Kilburne who has been bothering the retiree about his mission in Peru. Sarah Jane arrives and they briefly reminisce on their time in UNIT together with The Doctor, before Kilburne leaves. Sarah Jane asks the Brig to help her break into the Black Archive to steal the Tunguska Scroll, to which he agrees.
At 13 Bannerman Road, Luke and Clyde discuss the situation. Clyde tells Luke how his dad abandoned him and his mother when he was younger, but he still feels a connection to him. Luke feels the same way, and decides to speak with Mrs. Wormwood, since despite everything, she is the one who created him. Clyde reluctantly lets him go. Mrs. Wormwood is tries to convince Luke to release her, on the grounds she created him, and therefore would not harm him. Luke argues that it was Sarah Jane's love and nurture that made him into a real person after the Bane only grew him for their own purposes. Mrs. Wormwood demonstrates that she knows how hard his adjustment must have been, and relates to him his own loneliness at having no true biological family.
The Brig hides Sarah Jane and Rani in his car as he drives into the Black Archive. He once again runs into Kilburn, and tells him he is here to gain inspiration for his memoirs. Sarah and Rani make their way inside and retrieve the scroll, but set off the alarms in the process. Meanwhile, the Bane have found Mrs. Wormwood at the house and are attempting to break in. Mrs. Wormwood pleads with Luke to release her and claims to be his real mother, and for the sake of her life he deactivates the containment field.
At the Black Archive, Major Kilburn and the other soldiers corner Sarah Jane, Rani, and the Brig outside. Sarah Jane uses her sonic lipstick to cause feedback in their earpieces, which stuns them long enough for the group to escape.
At Bannerman Road, the Bane separate and corner Clyde, Luke, and Mrs. Wormwood. Before she can be killed, Wormwood is saved by Kaagh the Sontaran, who has been secretly working with her as a double agent to steal the Consciousness of Horath from the Bane. Mrs. Wormwood says that with him back, they can finally finish their plan to rule the galaxy and have revenge of Sarah Jane.
