Not a bad film....
MovieGuy014 March 2010
I watched this film last night and found it not to be too bad a film, but it did look like it was made on a very low budget the film is about a young girl called Jenny, who finds herself not wanted by either of her parents and when the opportunity comes for Jenny to leave home. She moves in with her boyfriend Rick but finds out that he is obsessed with witchcraft and black magic which takes her to the most horrific experience of her life, she starts to see things and believes that she is possessed. and has to go and stay at a psychiatric hospital. I found most of the start of the film to be very slow at times but it eventually got better towards the end. 3/10

How did this get any kind of release
dantheman69696926 February 2010
It's hard to know where to start. The first question is why I braved the afternoon to go and see this. I was hoping for a slice of gritty Northern life and got shock - It wasn't gritty, it wasn't good, it was - well nothing.

The story is supposed to be based around a truth - If you say so Mr. Jones! This limp effort could have been written by a five year old, shot by a chimp and edit by anyone in a Leeds cemetery.

This dull effort begins with Jenny (Rebecca Pitkin), a troubled teen from a broken home, committed to a psychiatric hospital, claiming demonic possession. Seems after she broke up with her boyfriend Rick (Pietro Herrera) he was snapped up by Jenny's main love rival Kate (Laura O'Donoughue), a witch. Kate, who likes stripping off and chanting, helps Rick place a spell on Jenny so that she'll fall in love with him again. Yes, you read that correctly: Kate has finally wrested Rick from her rival... and then goes to the bother of trying to magically reunite him with his ex-girlfriend. Why? Why? Why? Never mind, nothing else makes the slightest bit of sense.

Avoid this like the plague!

You should read a book whilst you watch this garbage

This has got to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched in my life. The storyline was good, but the acting, directing and production were appalling. It literally dragged all the way through. It was not in the least bit scary. The "special effects" consisted of a few things rattling and a couple of pictures moving. The theme song was sung by an absolutely awful "singer" who couldn't even reach the notes of the song.

It was so bad that it impelled me to write this review, which I have never done before and I provide and watch many movies to review. I honestly cannot find one good thing to say about it. Anyone who gives a good review of this has got to be connected in some way with the film. Keep your money in your pockets folks.

A Good Story Well Told
filmsRme-689-41095318 March 2010
I really liked this film and I think that was because, unlike a lot of other movies about the paranormal, it didn't go over the top with effects. Instead it concentrated on telling a real human story (it says it is based on a real life story) and because of that it came across as much more believable and scary than it would have been if it had been made as more of a fantasy film with lots of clever effects. And even though it was made on a low budget, overall the acting was really good and Rebecca Pitkin is a name to watch out for in the future - she was brilliant. Some of the reviews I've seen of the film rate it poorly but I'm guessing they are looking at it as a horror film, which it isn't, instead of as a drama, which it is, and a very good one at that! I loved it.

I Have seen This Film the Spell twice now with my Partner Rachel.I must say we have enjoyed it a lot. the story line which is based on a true story expressing awareness of things as they really are which relate to some teenagers around the Inner cities not just in UK but everywhere.also the Acting of Rebecca Pitkin was excellent, Great Effort and hard work had been put in, in order to bring the true story into a truly Realistic and Enjoyable to watch.as for the length of the film I wish it was a bit longer to Understanding the The inherent complex and difficult times the character Jenny experienced. Ps Looking forward to The Spell 2 If any in Pipe line.

Cheap movie has a valuable script
because-of-him1 November 2017
I have watched this on Comet TV on my local program station, so I don't know if there are any objectionable contents, other than mysticism (some may find that a problem). The movie is only 83 minutes long, so if you don't like it, you haven't lost too much of your life. Now, the movie is about a teen who has a horrible self-image. Right there, many can relate. She thinks those being kind are lying and so faces conflicts with everyone she meets. Again, many can relate. And, she wants to be alone all the time. Ditto, many teens want that type of selfishness. In the story, she realizes she has a mystical power to control people and punish them for not being nice to her. Again, some teens have yearned for such ability (I wished for that at that age). The ending is the best part, as everything in her life crashes. Yes, it is a low budget movie, but has a valuable script.
