In 1979, when Edgar Wright was five years old, he turned on Top of the Pops to find a boyish-looking singer bopping manically in place. A keyboardist next to him stood stock still, sporting floppy bangs and a Hitler-esque mustache, looking alternately bored and angry. The music sounded like a disco LP played at 45 rpm. “If you should die while crossing the street,” the first guy sang in a near falsetto, “The song you’ll hear, I guarantee/It’s number one all over heaven!”

It’s the Champ vs. the Maverick. On the line: bragging rights.
Undefeated five-time boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and YouTuber/pugilist Logan Paul confirmed today that they will square off in an exhibition bout on Showtime pay-per-view. It’s set for June 6 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Mayweather Promotions, Fanmio and Showtime are behind the event, which originally had been planned for February 20. No details about rules, rounds or such were announced. Tickets will go on sale next week.
“Marvelous” Marvin Hagler Dies: Popular Middleweight Champ & Boxing Hall Of Famer Was 66
Mayweather, 44, hasn’t fought since a 2018 exhibition against a Japanese kickboxer, and his last pro bout was against UFC legend Conor McGregor. The latter was the most-viewed PPV event in history, topping Mayweather’s 2015 Ko unanimous decision over ex-champ Manny Pacquiao for his 50th career pro victory. Of all the dramas made about substance abuse, “Body Brokers” is the first I can recall about the “treatment industry” itself, that multibillion-dollar sector dedicated to helping hard-drug users kick the habit, and its conclusion is startling: Addiction is a veritable money machine for doctors, therapists and pharmaceutical companies alike, a substantial number of whom thrive not on recovery but on repeat business. The shadier among them rely on low-level recruiters, or “body brokers,” to keep the system supplied with souls in need of saving — or else just some easy cash.
A self-described former junkie who experienced the dirty side of going clean firsthand, writer-director John Swab delivers an entertaining and eye-opening insider’s take on the treatment racket. , Swab presents an Ohio homeless couple, Utah (Jack Kilmer) and Opal (Alice Englert), who reluctantly agree to detox at posh SoCal-based New West Recovery.

As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.
This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

There is no such thing as a casual Frank Zappa fan — it’s an all-or-nothing proposition. (Really, there’s no such thing as a casual Frank Zappa listener, period: You either immediately recoil from his grandiose, often goofy odes to dancin’ fools and yellow snow, self-promoting pimps and and S&m aficionados … or you end friendships arguing over which bootleg of his Over Nite Sensation ’73 shows is the best.) And on a scale from one to plays-in-a-Joe’s-Garage-cover-band, we’d put Alex Winter’s level of worship somewhere near an eight.

Alex Winter’s “Zappa” is an odd, occasionally jarring documentary, but it wouldn’t make sense for it to be anything else. The film about the iconoclastic musician Frank Zappa sometimes feels like an autobiography from beyond the grave, sometimes playing like a heartfelt tribute and sometimes adopting Zappa’s rhythms and style to be purposefully disorienting. It’s a Zappa-esque concoction — which, of course, is exactly what it ought to be.
The movie was originally scheduled to premiere at South by Southwest in March, but it was pushed back when that festival was canceled. It now opens in theaters and on-demand on Nov. 27 after a special theatrical event on Nov. 23; instead of being the first film in a busy 2020 for Winter that also included directing the HBO documentary “Showbiz Kids” and acting in “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” it’s the last.

Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. Although Netflix can probably expect to continue their dominance over subscribers through the end of 2020, Amazon Prime are releasing some notable titles for the last month of the year, including original films like I’m Your Woman and new episodes of The Expanse.
In terms of the former, it stars Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a picture about a woman who has to go on the run after her husband gets into trouble with his business partner. We’ll also be seeing the much-anticipated Sound of Metal, which features Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer who develops hearing loss. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as the various streaming services are stocking their libraries with some great new titles this December to keep us going through the festive period. When it comes to Hulu, the Disney-owned platform is adding a few holiday-related movies and TV shows, but is mostly taking the track of stuffing itself full of classic films that the whole family can enjoy.
This includes a bunch of the best James Bond pics ever made, like GoldenEye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and, the one that kicked it all off, Dr. No. That would be a perfect watch to honor Sean Connery, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Other action movies you might want to check out this December, meanwhile, include The Hurt Locker, The Fifth Element, 2003’s Hulk and the two “Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon” flicks, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

I don’t know if this whole global pandemic is having some sort of adverse effect on me in terms of how I am feeling towards some movies. It may even be the case that binge watching Dawson’s Creek, which has just been released on Netflix, is not really the best idea for my 36 year old teenage-angsty mind. Purely from the title of this movie, and after having watched the trailer for My Summer as a Goth, I went into the film with some pretty low expectations, but I do remember a little independent British flick that I saw earlier this year called Soundtrack to Sixteen that stole my heart so I’m open to being proven wrong…

The thing about artists is that their life’s work is objective. It remains once they’re gone. Few other career paths can claim that since money doesn’t count. You don’t make money. Some earn it. Some steal it. Some do everything in their power to avoid its hold on their lives beyond the basic need for survival. And by all accounts, Frank Zappa was keenly aware of that distinction. He knew what was necessary to help raise a family and what was necessary to feed his creative process. Money was therefore not the endgame, but instead a crucial raw material. That which came in went out to build what truly mattered: a legacy on vinyl, paper, and tape. He created as a compulsion, not as an enterprise.

Haley Lu Richardson in ‘Unpregnant’ Trailer Gives a Buddy Comedy Spin on Teen Abortion Drama (Video)
Though there’s already a very serious looking drama about teen abortion called “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” that opened this year, the first trailer for the new film “Unpregnant” starring Haley Lu Richardson gives a road trip, buddy comedy spin on the same story.
Richardson stars alongside Barbie Ferreira in a comedy coming to HBO Max in which Richardson plays a straight-a student and popular kids who enlists her more rebellious, former best friend (Ferreira) to get an abortion over 1,000 miles in New Mexico. Of course in this story, they end up on the run from the cops, in a stolen Trans-Am and even trying to jump aboard a moving train on their trip to get the procedure done.
“There’s an Albuquerque in Missouri? The law won’t let me get one without my parents knowing,” Richardson says in the trailer. “It’s my life, it’s my choice.

HBO Max is continuing to round out its original film programming, adding a fresh new comedy from “Valley Girl” remake filmmaker Rachel Lee Goldenberg and rising stars Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira to its upcoming slate. “Unpregnant” puts a humorous spin on a tough, timely topic, but promises to do it with a generous dash of humor. The film’s first trailer offers a funny first look at a fresh take on the young adult novel of the same name, written by authors Jenni Hendriks (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Ted Caplan (music editor for “The Hate U Give” and “The Greatest Showman”).
The film follows Richardson’s Veronica, a Missouri teen who is shocked to discover she is pregnant, and who sets off on a road trip with her former best pal Bailey (Ferreira) in hopes of securing an abortion so that she can continue to pursue her Ivy League college dreams.

It’s been over seven years since A24 released Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring,” but never has the inspiration behind the movie seen it. Alexis Haines (née Neiers) served as the basis for Emma Watson’s Nicki Moore, a fame-obsessed Valley Girl who is imprisoned for robbing the homes of celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan. Haines appeared on comedian Ziwe Fumudow’s popular Instagram Live show this week and touched upon “The Bling Ring.” Not only has Haines not seen the film, but she also took issue with Watson’s casting after the actress publicly condemned her.
“The problem I had is with the comments [Watson] made about me and the role despite the fact that she already knew that I was a convicted…like the heroin part, the drug addiction part had already come out. So I was actually in treatment at the time they were filming the movie.

Not since the summer of 2003, when François Ozon unveiled Sapphic sizzler “Swimming Pool” at the Cannes Film Festival, has the French director seduced audiences quite as brazenly as he does in “Summer of 85,” which was also set to premiere at Cannes, before the global coronavirus outbreak forced the cancellation of the 2020 edition. Undaunted, the film opened July 14 in French theaters, which have rebounded faster than those of the U.S., with a festival premiere planned for San Sebastián in the fall.

John Hughes’ breakthrough writing-directing hit still carries a glow that defuses its rougher edges, making it one of the best of ’80s Teen comedies. Even the savvy Soraya Roberts cuts it some slack, thanks to the authentic presence and fine performance of Molly Ringwald. Hughes’ amusing script comes up with at least ten moments that would have made Preston Sturges laugh, and his perfect casting for personalities young and old makes his direction look inspired. With great turns by Anthony Michael Hall, Haviland Morris, Debbie Pollack, Gedde Watanabe, Paul Dooley, and Michael Schoeffling.

YouTube star Logan Paul knew that he had his work cut out for him when he was cast in a new musical remake of Martha Coolidge’s 1983 teen classic “Valley Girl.” Starting with the dance routines. “I’m not a dancer. I’m a 6-foot-tall, 200-pound brick of a human,” Paul told TheWrap in a Zoom interview. “It’s easy to say, ‘Loosen up,’ but that’s hard — I’m pretty tense, you know?”
In addition, there was the challenge of embodying the 1980s time period of the original film (a cult hit that provided an early breakout role for Nicolas Cage as a young punk rocker from the city who teams up with a girl from the San Fernando Valley).
“They asked me to grow out a mullet and lose 20 pounds, so I only did one of those,” joked Paul, who has a supporting role in the film (which...

Logan Paul has built his YouTube empire by collaborating and making entertaining videos, so what does that mean for his outlets in a time of mandatory stay-at-home orders? “I got especially blessed during this quarantine because my line of work doesn’t really require me to leave my house,” Paul said in a Zoom interview. “If we just challenge ourselves a little bit, we are able to come up with some pretty captivating content.”
Paul, who co-stars in the just-released remake of “Valley Girl,” said he has “empathy for those who are struggling right now.” He recently helped manufacture and give away 30,000 protective face masks to fans, he said, and donated $20,000 to $30,000 to those in need because of the pandemic.
And he has big plans for giveaways in the future, too. “Mark my words, and remember this moment, once I start making serious, serious money again, I will be giving away serious,...

Val Kilmer is having a moment, thanks to Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s whatever-happened-to…? portrait of him in The New York Times Magazine, which was pegged to the release of his memoir “I’m Your Huckleberry.” It’s one of those buzzy voyeuristic profiles that takes the measure of a movie star who slipped between the cracks and became a gonzo ghost/parody of himself, propelled at times by an engine of self-destructive behavior. Yet the Kilmer saga is singular. In his heyday, he looked like a brainy sun god and was a hard-to-cast, flaked-out talent who fell away from Hollywood without ever having entirely fit into it. The Times profile captures Kilmer the high-flying eccentric and the Christian Scientist. The acting prima donna and the has-been. The throat-cancer victim who lost his voice and now speaks in a whisper. The cockeyed optimist and the survivor. And the legend?

Movie fans focused on VOD value this week — an easy choice, with no new major releases. (That will change in a few days with the Warner Bros. original family title “Scoob!” at $19.99.) Sony’s “Bloodshot” opened the last weekend theaters operated, became a $19.99 premium VOD offering a few weeks later, and last Tuesday it dropped to $5.99. It now stands in the top three for all of our reported charts, including #1 at Amazon Prime, and #2 at FandangoNow which ranks by amount paid, not transactions.
“I Still Believe” dropped its prices to $5.99 this week, and their chart placements improved. This flags a potential issue: How many people will get used to holding off for a few weeks, in exchange for seeing the price drop by 60 percent or more? Many of these viewers were content to wait three months after initial theatrical play, so delaying rental for a month might not be a tough choice.

When the original Valley Girl was released in 1983, most of you weren't even a thought in your parents' imaginations.
Meanwhile, like the Valley Girls themselves, I was a high school senior navigating the chilly waters of teenage acceptance.
Because of that film and its place in history, most of you probably have a better idea of girls from the valley than I did at that time. All we knew of such places came from entertainment, and until the Frank and Moon Zappa song arrived (which very loosely inspired the film), everything from The Valley was as distant as Arabia to a girl from Pittsburgh.
Fast forward an incredible 37 years, and the movie that fascinated a generation and launched the career of Nicolas Cage gets a reboot.
Given my very soft feelings for the original film, the thought of replacing it worried me. And it's a musical, which is not, by any stretch,...

1983’s Valley Girl was one of a myriad of teen movies that decade that mixed wish-fulfilment and star-crossed lovers to riff on the old Romeo and Juliet premise. And whilst the film featured a career-defining role from Nicolas Cage as one half of the lovers at the centre of the film, the movie has – in the years since – seemingly fallen out of favour with both those that lived through that decade of cinema and those who look back on those films with a fondness, be it an ironic fondness or not.
Originally slated for release in 2018, this Valley Girl was set to follow hot on the heels of the remake of Adventures in Babysitting, another remake of an 80s favourite. A few...

Though it doesn’t have the same cultural cache as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Sixteen Candles,” or “The Breakfast Club,” Martha Coolidge’s 1983 film, “Valley Girl,” beat John Hughes to the punch with a film that mixes realistic teen problems and a New Wave soundtrack, endearing it by an entire generation of audiences. Sure, looking back at it today, the film feels dated and cringey (as it’s a clear product of an era), but back in the early-‘80s, “Valley Girl” was downright revolutionary.

A Boho in Noho: Goldenberg Slathers a Classic in Nostalgic Reminisces
Feeling nostalgic is akin to wearing rose-color glasses, distorting our tender reminiscing of bygone eras and customs to which we can never return. It’s more than a feeling when you hear that old song play…but our better instincts can be occluded when we’re unable to reconcile the past with the present. Such is the problem facing an unnecessary musical remake of Martha Coolidge’s 1983 classic Valley Girl, a property which is now also the directorial debut of Rachel Lee Goldenberg.
Whereas the original reconstituted Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet for the Southern California climate, the remake is framed by the present as a candy coated fairy tale of the past, when the cultural distinctions between the valley in Los Angeles, a suburban bubble with distinct dialects and neutered customs, was far removed from the jagged edges...

In 1983, “Valley Girl” captured the class divide between the residents of the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood. The musical remake — now available on-demand — follows the same plot and setting. But remake director Rachel Lee Goldenberg and production designer Theresa Guleserian had a challenge the original crew didn’t: creating an accurate and cohesive ’80s look nearly 40 years removed from the decade.
“Finding the locations was half the battle,” Goldenberg told TheWrap. Shot entirely in Southern California, some of the locales didn’t need too much work: beach scenes were shot at Newport’s Balboa Pier, and a dreamy sequence between Valley good girl Julie (Jessica Rothe) and Hollywood bad boy Randy (Josh Whitehouse) took place at the classic Griffith Park merry-go-round.
But what about that ’80s institution: the shopping mall? Sure, malls still exist, but with the proliferation of online shopping, brick and mortar malls are no longer the social...

Theaters have been closed long enough now due to Covid-19 that distributors are starting to figure out how to launch their limited-release movies via streaming services instead. May 8 brings more than two dozen new releases, including a handful that can be seen on drive-in screens, and a high-profile Netflix original in the form of Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming.” Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.
Playing in extremely limited release, and widely on demand:
How to Build a Girl (Coky Giedroyc)
Distributor: IFC Films
Where to Find It: Select drive-in theaters, or rent via digital and on-demand platforms.

Remember Valley Girl? Back in the 80s, the romantic comedy helped usher in a new era for films. Eventually turning into a cult classic, the movie now has spawned a remake. Luckily, as misguided as that idea may have initially sounded, this take on the material, imagining it as a jukebox musical of sorts, has a surprisingly large amount of life to it. It’s cheesy and unrepentantly old fashioned, but it has a ton of charm, as well. Hitting Digital today, this is a fun little flick, one that you’ll likely smile at throughout its entire running time. Whether you’re a fan of the original or not, this is just a good time. The movie is a remake of the 1983 title of the same name, though this version of the plot is told a bit differently. Here, an older Julie (Alicia Silverstone) is telling the story of...

Everyone knows the beats of the original “Valley Girl,” a neon-colored gem of teen-centric ’80s moviemaking that should be remembered in the same breath as “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Sixteen Candles” and yet has remained oddly hard to come by in the nearly four decades since it was released. Like most great high school-set love stories, it’s a Romeo and Juliet tale, this time configured around a pair of decidedly period-appropriate lovers: a high-ponytailed Valley Girl and a tattooed Hollywood punk. Martha Coolidge’s original film, which starred Deborah Foreman and a young Nicolas Cage,
Anyone prone to snarking at this material from the outset will be turned from the start, and the anachronistic nature of the material doesn’t help matters. Southern California is first and foremost a car culture. Everything’s so spread out, any trip to the mall, the movies, the beach takes place on wheels. For today’s So Cal teens, those trips offer a chance to catchup on cell phone conversations, podcasts, maybe NPR, but back in the early ’80s, drive time was dominated by pop radio, and the stations competed to be cutting edge. You can hear that in the original “Valley Girl,” a generation-defining opposites-attract romance that opens with a helicopter shot that pans from Hollywood, up over the hills, past a radio tower, to the San Fernando Valley. We hear the L.A.-based station fade out and the female Valley-side DJ take over.
From there on, “Valley Girl” was basically wall-to-wall new wave discoveries — catchy, synth-powered songs from bands that hadn’t yet broken, lending cred to an otherwise conventional tale of the edgy,...

‘Valley Girl’: How Director Rachel Lee Goldenberg Turned the Cult Classic Into a Lively ’80s Musical
It must be written somewhere that any and all cinematic homages to the neon-tinged ’80s have to include the use of Cyndi Lauper’s pop classic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” That’s doubly true for films focused on girls coming of age during the decade: Lauper’s 1983 song even inspired a 1985 comedy with the same name. And the cinematic truism still holds in Rachel Lee Goldenberg’s new “Valley Girl,” a musical reimagining of Martha Coolidge’s 1983 cult classic.
For the first-time feature filmmaker, turning the film into a jukebox musical was actually a means of saluting the original. “I wanted to feel like there’s a reason and we’re not just rehashing this classic cult film, and the musical element felt like it gave permission to pay homage to it,” Goldenberg said in a recent interview. “Taking all these songs and re-producing them and re-imagining them...

With the anticipated release of MGM and Orion Pictures’ new film Valley Girl, we sat down with its two impressive leads to chat about returning to the 1980s.
Valley Girl stars Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) and Josh Whitehouse (Poldark) star as Julie and Randy respectively, a valley girl and a punk rocker from the city who defy their parents and friends to begin a love story that may or may not have a happy ending. A remake of the 1983 film, which co-starred a young Nicolas Cage, the new version has become a musical, bringing many of your favourite songs to life in new ways through this Romeo and Juliet-style take.
