Episode 5

The episode opens with the aftermath of the choir performing in front of Queen Victoria. A real cause for celebrations.

It ends with the consequences of relying on one main employer in the pit village.

Angharad never seemed to have truly fallen for Iestyn Evans. He now shows his true colours. A vile violent snob.

He plans to sell the mines and go off to make money wherever he could so he can pay off his gambling debts.

The Morgans along with others are for the scrap heap. Dai Bando thinks he can go back to the fight game at his age.

For Huw Morgan, as he is young he is regarded as cheap labour and opts to go down the pits instead of university. He does not want to end up like Mr Jonas, ashamed of his heritage.

You sense the growth of Huw Morgan as a person here. Changes are afoot in the village. He is romancing Ceinwen Lloyd but it is his abusive relationship with Mr Jonas that determines his future.

Although as in the famous film version. Huw does not look cut out to be a miner.
