I grew up in the Leeds depicted in this programme in the 70s, and found I actually quite enjoyed it (the programme that is, not sure about Leeds back then). But I had to suspend all my disbelief because Leeds was nothing like this. His portrayal of the Yorkshire Evening Post is laughable - I'm sure that former reporters of that time like Peter Lazenby, Anne Pickles and - yes - Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits had a laugh watching this. The YEP - there's nowt like it at night. Not on Channel 4 anyway. Corrupt cops, yes, but this dystopian vision existed only in the authors head. Maybe David Peace has been reading too much manga over there in Japan. His John Dawson character is obviously based on John Poulsen, the corrupt architect and developer, who also had a fancy mansion built for himself in Pontefract. But Poulsen was more Alf Roberts than Sean Bean. The recreation of 1970s Leeds was not that great either. The cars were all wrong - where were the Mk 3 Cortinas? And the music - King Crimson? More like Sweet, Gary Glitter and Wizzard. Still, an interesting work of fictional drama.
