- Violent. Visceral. Anarchic. Some call it music. Others call it a problem. One film asks the big question surrounding the controversial Drill music scene: does life imitate art, or does art imitate life? Go beyond the headlines to unearth the roots and the impact of a divisive form of self-expression. From musicians and gang members to victims of violence and industry professionals, discover a new human narrative on a disaffected generation and understand the origins of the most talked about cultural phenomenon for decades.
- Century Films' documentary about Drill Music is a feature-length production for YouTube exploring the complexities of the fastest growing music genre in the UK, using the music itself. The film explores the lives of the artists and those around them to help inform a thoughtful, human, layered film about life today in Britain.
In the last year, drill music has hit the headlines not only for achieving mainstream recognition and radio play outs but also because it is believed to have close links to drugs and knife crime, making it hugely controversial.
The intention was to produce a balanced and artistic film giving a voice to people who have some connection with drill; from artists exploring how it feels to belong to a marginalized part of society to family and friends of victims of youth violence and organizations who are helping to spread a more positive message of an otherwise disenfranchised group.
On the face of it Terms & Conditions is a film about a genre of music - drill. But it's about so much more; racism, poverty, inequality, the portrayal of women, masculinity, violence. Despite the serious nature of the subject matter the film also portrays humor, as in the scene where rapper AM shoots his own music video in the Sussex countryside. The film is also full of surprises, as in the scene where a masked drill rapper sits in a studio with music producer Fraser T Smith and talks about wanting to record a track about income inequality.
Terms & Conditions tackles serious social issues but in a way that never feels preachy or worthy. And because of that, it's a film that has reached a big youth audience. It's also an insight into the creative process with one of the UK's top music producers.
