Over the two years since Elden Ring’s release, challenge runners have done everything they can to crank up the difficulty. From restricting the usage of healing items to completely randomizing the world, you’d be hard-pressed to find some variation of a challenge that hasn’t been attempted.

Review: Founded in 1934, the Hammer film production company became very popular when it started releasing horror films in the mid-1950s. From that point through the early ‘70s, Hammer was one of the biggest names in horror… but then they found it hard to compete with the big horror films of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and things gradually fell apart for them. In 1979, the company went into liquidation. Attempts to revive the Hammer brand began in 2008, and we’ve seen some notable releases from the company in recent years: Let Me In, The Resident, The Woman in Black, and The Lodge among them.

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s vampire novel Let the Right One In (or Låt den rätte komma in) has inspired a Swedish film of the same name, an American film called Let Me In, and a short-lived Showtime series called Let the Right One In, while his short story Gräns served as the basis of the 2018 fantasy film Border. The latest adaptation of his work is the Norwegian film Handling the Undead, based on the novel Hanteringen av odöda. The film will be screening at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival as part of the World Cinematic Dramatic Competition, and has also secured a North American and UK distribution deal with Neon. In the 26th episode of Deadline Strike Talk — which for below the liners signifies half a year without a paycheck that hasn’t come from Uber fares or waiting tables — host Billy Ray hits on a zeitgeist theme that gets voiced a lot by people who just feel that the business isn’t as remotely as exciting or near as much fun as it was before the folly that signatories put themselves into by chasing Netflix as it became the preeminent streamer. The result has put just about every other streamer pursuit in a position of being money losers that have strained the economics, and accelerated the demise of those conglomerates’ traditional networks, and so many other things.
Ray begins by addressing the fear that informs so many moves in Hollywood, and is anathema to great creative work. Joining him are two Hollywood veterans, John Ptak and Marc Evans. While they flourished in different areas,...

This has to be a breakthrough, right?
Several vital characters found ways to communicate with the invading aliens on Invasion Season 2 Episode 6.
So maybe soon we might get answers as to why the aliens are on Earth and what they want.
If humanity's leaders can get those answers, maybe, just maybe, they could act rather than react as they have so far. They can go on offense rather than continuing to play defense.
Man, it's taken a long time to get to this point. It's been a season and a half, and we still know little about the aliens.
They have to have more going on than just being mindless attacking machines, don't they?
Communication is going to be critical if humans are to survive. And at the forefront has been Mitsuki Yamato.
That's understandable, as she both feels guilty about and wants revenge on the aliens for the death of her lover,...

Now that Endeavour has ended for good, there are a few obvious places for fans to go in search of more of the crossword-solving, bitter-drinking, classics-quoting Oxford detective. The first are Colin Dexter’s novels, which established the character. The second is the original ITV show Inspector Morse based on those books, which starred John Thaw in the title role for 33 feature-length episodes between 1987 and 2000. Thirdly, there’s sequel Lewis, which continued the story of Morse’s underling Robbie through his own inspector days, and which also ran for 33 episodes, up until 2015. Both are currently streamable on BritBox in the UK and US, as well as Itvx, and PBS Masterpiece.
The likelihood though, is that those three will have already been exhausted by Morse devotees, so here are some recommendations of detective shows with a touch of Endeavour about them, whether it’s a melancholic lead with a brilliant mind,...

Fans of the Tumblr comic series “Nimona” can finally take a peek at Netflix’s upcoming animated feature film adaptation.
“Nimona,” set in a techno-medieval landscape where magic and technology combine, follows shape-shifting teenager Nimona (Moretz) as she tries to prove the innocence of wrongly convicted Knight Ballister Boldheart (Ahmed).
Joining Moretz and Ahmed in the film are Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman and Eugene Lee Yang.
In 2015, the internet comic was published by HarperCollins, becoming a New York Times bestselling graphic novel. Twentieth Century Fox Animation initially acquired the rights to the film, based on cartoonist Nd Stevenson’s webcomics, and planned to release the film in 2020 with “Big Hero 6” animator Patrick Osborne to direct. But when Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the company shuttered animation house Blue Sky Studios and canceled the project. In April 2022, Netflix announced it had acquired the film,...

Sneak Peek new images of actress Chloë Grace Moretz aka 'Hit-Girl' from the "Kick-Ass" movie series, in the June 2023 issue of “Marie Claire (Korea)" magazine:
"The way I look at it is, I’m trying to start conversations," said Moretz. "You might not agree with my opinions, and that’s great—I would love to talk about it."
"With movies like 'Kick-Ass', 'Carrie' and 'Let Me In', I was able to push boundaries at a really young age. Now that I’m able to get projects funded, curate scripts, and make movies, it means a lot to me to go against gender norms. My biggest thing now is making gender-equalizing movies, where you can put a male actor or a female actor in that role, and it would work the same way…”
There is a dedicated fan-base including director Quentin Tarantino, that supports Chloë Grace Moretz' portrayal as young female vigilante 'Hit-Girl'.

Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.
In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.

Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour Series 9 Episode 3 ‘Exeunt’.
For the most part, the Endeavour finale kept its feet on the ground and provided answers to long-held fan questions. One scene however, set a new mystery. Why, between saying goodbye to Fred in Radcliffe Square and attending his choir’s Blenheim Palace rehearsal, does Endeavour go alone to a churchyard and fire a gun?
It’s not just any gun, but Fred Thursday’s Webley service revolver, a war memento that’s made various appearances in Endeavour since Series 1, and most recently used in a shoot-out with Di Lott’s goons. Fred didn’t pack it for the removal men with the rest of his belongings, and has it with him when he and Endeavour say an emotional goodbye. “Why don’t you take this,” he asks. “You might need it, if you’re staying.”

Warning: contains spoilers for the Endeavour Series 9 finale and the Inspector Morse finale.
There have scarcely been more elegant TV endings. In its final episode ‘Exeunt’, Endeavour bid farewell much in the restrained and upright manner of its central characters. Like them, it said a great deal without saying too much, and paid purposeful tributes with a light touch.
The finale’s last moments played out dialogue-free with a meaningful passing of the baton. As young Morse drove his black Jaguar Mk 1 out of the Blenheim Palace grounds, he passed a red Jaguar Mk 2 travelling in the opposite direction. Each driver clocked the other in their rear view mirror – the eyes of Shaun Evans in one, and the eyes of Inspector Morse star John Thaw in the other.
That moment was a call-back to almost the very same at the end of the 2012 Endeavour pilot ‘Overture’ in which Thaw’s...

Stephen King’s classic book Carrie received a more contemporary film adaptation in 2013 with Chloe Grace Moretz playing the titular character. But Moretz admitted that portraying the social outcast took an emotional toll that was a bit hard to shake off.

The 2022 film "Elvis" continues to receive accolades, having recently been nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for star Austin Butler. The story of Elvis Presley was directed and co-written by Baz Luhrmann, focusing on the life of the iconic performer, of course, and his nefarious manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. But there are so many moments where actors with smaller parts shine. Olivia DeJonge is a standout as Priscilla Presley, despite not having a ton of screen time. Yola's work as Sister Rosetta Tharpe made me want to pause and rewind fairly consistently.
The fact that performers with only a small amount of screentime stood out so much wasn't an accident, according to a discussion Luhrmann had with the film's composer, Elliott Wheeler, on a Warner Bros. Pictures YouTube video called "Baz Luhrmann's Elvis: The Story of the Score." During the chat,...

The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.

“The core of the show is what are you willing to do for someone you love?” reveals Andrew Hindraker, creator and showrunner of Showtime’s horror drama “Let the Right One In.” For our recent webchat he adds, “the light and the darkness, I know that sounds like an image that has been used before, but it really profoundly, literally informed so many of the visuals,” he explains. “For example, the first scene of the show is a vampire experiencing his first sunrise in years. He has a shot where in the darkness of the eyes, you see the reflection of the sun breaking the horizon, and that’s like a literal light in the darkness,” he says. “There’s a lot of darkness in the frame, but there is a tiny flickering light that never goes out.” We talked with Hinderaker as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet...

Hammer Horror: the name rings so ubiquitously in the realms of cinema, and especially around Halloween. Hearing the name, you’re likely to picture one of a number of the British studio’s releases between the 1950s and early 1970s which boasted decadent set design and an intensity of fear and playfulness. A studio of progressive storytelling compared to other offerings of the time, in Hammer’s horror subdivision could be found Technicolor horror (and its subgenres), often sexually and socially provocative, taking classical source material and turning it on its head. Seen as vulgar to the critics, audiences loved the low-budget thrills of Hammer Horror as a refreshing alternative to Hollywood, with two actors in particular becoming distinct heroes of the cycle, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. But what are the sounds behind the horror? The wonder of movie soundtracks can be put on best display in the horror genre,...

Playing the opening strains of Michael Giacchino's Bruce Wayne theme as it was heard in the 2022 film "The Batman" is quite simple, and can be explained even by a layman like me. In 4/4 time, play a B♭ three times in a row, a dotted quarter note, then an eighth note, then a quarter note. Then play a G♭ quarter. Repeat as many times as you like. It's very similar to the first section of John Carpenter's theme for "Halloween," or John William's opening notes in "Jaws," in that the basics are easy for even the most bumbling amateur to work out on a keyboard. Also, like "Halloween" and Jaws," Giacchino's theme is quickly expanded and overlaid with other melodies, tones, and musical counterpoints that make the simple bass melody a mere spine to a much more complicated animal.
The two-note Bruce Wayne theme is effective and instantly recognizable.

AMC’s “Interview With the Vampire” is a great example of how a TV series can be an opportunity to modernize dated source material and films. This week, the vampires aren’t as lucky with Showtime’s “Let the Right One In.”
Many changes made for the series were done in the name of sustaining narrative television. The TV series follows the basic outline of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, as well as Tomas Alfredson’s 2008 feature involving a young boy whose new friend is a vampire, as well as 2010’s American remake directed by Matt Reeves, “Let Me In.” From there, both movies take different routes to tell their story. Which version is right for you? It depends.
1. Formulaic Backstories
Advantage: “Let the Right One In,” the series

Like a vampire impervious to exposure, “Let the Right One In” is one of very few stories to not just survive multiple adaptations, but thrive with each new iteration. The book that started it all, John Ajvide Lindqvist’s 2004 novel, became a bestseller before the author worked with Tomas Alfredson to create what Roger Ebert later called “the best modern vampire movie.” Then Matt Reeves came along with the inevitable American remake, and even 2010’s “Let Me In” earned rave reviews. Yes, some cited redundancies between the two horror films, but seeing an eerie tale of loneliness reach a wider audience — without the original’s core complexities dumbed down or cheapened — proved more significant than any overlap.
Still, after three recitations of a tender friendship between one bullied 12-year-old and his vampire neighbor who only looks like an adolescent, further retellings demanded significant change — and Showtime’s new series of the same name,...

Sometimes it’s easy to predict the classic stories that will be adapted over and over and over again. Nobody bats an eye at the latest take on War and Peace or David Copperfield, or the latest production of Hamlet.
Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Låt den rätte komma in isn’t necessarily the most obvious choice as 21st century Shakespeare, but the haunting 2004 vampire novel keeps being adapted in different forms and I somehow keep loving the variations and permutations. The book is already a dazzling revision of classic vampire lore and Tomas Alfredson’s 2008 feature Let the Right One In is a masterful mixture of horror, suspense and coming-of-age drama. Matt Reeves’ 2010 American take, with its name tweaked to Let Me In, is one of the most successful of unnecessary remakes, effectively echoing Alfredson’s film and adding just enough...

Once again, the great cycle of culture has come back around to vampires. This year, TV has seen a new season of FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” as well as the debuts of AMC’s “Interview With the Vampire,” Peacock’s “Vampire Academy,” and Netflix’s “First Kill” — all of which were based on existing intellectual property. It follows, then, that the latest entry into the genre would be drawn from a story that was big during the last great vampire craze.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.
Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

Plot: Inspired by the original hit Swedish novel and film, the series centers on Mark (Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Baez), whose lives were changed 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the human blood she needs to stay alive.
Review: It is amazing to me that in the 18 years since the titular novel was released, we are about to get our third version of Let the Right One In. After the acclaimed Swedish film in 2008 and Matt Reeves’ well-received remake two years later, Showtime’s take on the vampire story by John Ajvide Lindqvist deviates the most from the source material to create a unique blend of the narrative you may be familiar with combined with conventions of many other television shows.

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s 2004 novel “Let the Right One In” has already been adapted three times, first, and most successfully, as a wildly acclaimed Swedish film by Tomas Alfredson in 2008. The Hollywood machine quickly turned that around and retitled it “Let Me In,” directed by Matt Reeves, for an underrated English-language version in 2010. It was even given a stage adaptation in Scotland in 2013, where it got some decent reviews.

Does the world need another remake of “Let The Right One In“? Tomas Alfredson‘s 2008 film was already an adaptation of a 2004 novel, and then the American remake “Let Me In” hit theaters in 2010. Make no mistake, it’s still a chilling story and an intriguing take on vampire lore, but is telling it again necessary?

Upon its release in 2008, "Let The Right One In" became an instant horror classic. Weaving a coming-of-age story with vampire mythos, Tomas Alfredson's film and its story of Oskar and Eli remains essential viewing for horror fans to this very day. Considering how well-received this film was, it is probably no surprise that an American remake was met with a fair amount of skepticism. After all, if it isn't broken, why bother fixing it?
Filmmaker Matt Reeves was originally in this camp when an English-language adaptation of "Let The Right One In" was announced. The future director of "The Batman" revealed in a 2011 interview that he was approached to direct "Let Me In" after the smash success of his debut feature, "Cloverfield." However, he originally refused based on how good the original was.

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s vampire novel Let the Right One In (or Låt den rätte komma in) has inspired a Swedish film of the same name, an American film called Let Me In, and an upcoming Showtime series called Let the Right One In, while his short story Gräns served as the basis of the 2018 fantasy film Border. Now Variety reports that we’re getting another film based on Lindqvist source material, and this time it’s a zombie movie called Handling the Undead, based on the novel Hanteringen av odöda. TrustNordisk has picked up the international sales rights to the character-driven horror drama, which is currently filming.

It’s finally been confirmed: ITV’s Endeavour will return for another three-episode series, which will be the Inspector Morse prequel’s final outing. It was announced this week that a mutual decision had been made between producers Mammoth Screen, creator Russell Lewis and stars Shaun Evans and Roger Allam to bring the crime drama to a close. The currently filming ninth series will be Endeavour’s last.
Mammoth Screen commented: “Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us!” The latter quote was used by Inspector Morse creator Colin Dexter as the title of his final Morse novel, and originally comes from the A.E. Housman poem known as ‘How Clear, How Lovely Bright’. While fans await official confirmation from Mammoth Productions, the planets appear to be coming into alignment for filming to start on the ninth series of ITV crime drama Endeavour, starring Shaun Evans and Roger Allam.
Series eight concluded on ITV in September 2021 with a touching tribute to Inspector Morse actor John Thaw, and some uplifting words from Allam’s Fred Thursday. Having reached its 33rd episode (the same number of Morse stories filmed), many predicted eight would be Endeavour’s final series, though Allam suggested the drama would have “a few more to wrap things up”. Not least to wrap up the ongoing mystery of how and why his character has disappeared from Morse’s life by the time of the John Thaw incarnation.

Update, with Girl From The North Country Broadway’s Mrs. Doubtfire will unplug the vacuum cleaner and hang up the apron earlier than expected: The musical, which has been posting middling box office numbers during the industry’s crowded spring season, will end its run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on May 29, producers announced.

A new “Batman” movie is upon us, this time with Robert Pattinson filling the lead role.
“The Batman” offers a new take on the Caped Crusader a decade after Christopher Nolan wrapped up his Dark Knight Trilogy and a few years after Ben Affleck’s take on the character somewhat petered out. This new film comes from “War for the Planet of the Apes” and “Let Me In” filmmaker Matt Reeves, who draws from gritty crime procedurals like “Seven” and “Zodiac” to craft a nearly three-hour detective story with a man dressed as a bat following clues left behind by a serial killer calling himself The Riddler. It’s a dark, moody and wildly compelling twist on the Batman character that somehow manages to feel fresh. And it’s poised to be one of the biggest films of the year.
But in these new entertainment consumption times, how do you watch “The Batman?...

As a general rule of thumb, U.S. remakes of non-American films are a bad idea. They rarely seem to measure up to the movies that came before them, and even when they do, it can be hard for them to escape their predecessor's shadow, no matter how well they stand on their own. Yes, there are some major exceptions to this rule — hello, "The Departed"!
Such is the case with "Cloverfield" and "The Batman" filmmaker Matt Reeves' "Let Me In," a mostly respected yet somewhat under-appreciated 2010 U.S. remake of director Tomas Alfredson's revered 2008 Swedish horror drama "Let the Right One In." The...

[Editor’s note: This article was originally published in December 2021 and has been updated. It includes some mild spoilers about the plot of “The Power of the Dog.”]
What is Peter thinking? You never quite know with Oscar nominee Kodi Smit-McPhee’s beguiling and full-bodied performance in Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog.” He has venom in his marrow, but a kindliness and surgical precision in the way he crafts paper flowers for his mother Rose (Kirsten Dunst). He collects anthrax with the laser focus of an epidemiologist. He walks and moves at an otherworldly tempo, stalking the edges of cinematographer Ari Wegner’s frames like a fox — and that’s by design, as the actor chose the sly, bushy-tailed creature as his animal archetype while building his character.
“They’re very light on their feet. They’re very nimble, but they can also be quite fatal. And the way that they hunt is actually kind of cute in a way. But very vicious in the final moment,” the 25-year-old Australian actor told IndieWire, Zooming from...

A striking number of Oscar-nominated acting talent from 2021 got their start at a young age, with the power and excitement of performing for the screen grabbing them early and never letting go. Kristen Stewart began acting at age 8, and just received her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Princess Diana in “Spencer.” She recently spoke to Nicole Kidman, who landed her fifth nomination with her portrayal of Lucille Ball in “Being the Ricardos” for Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” about their youthful careers. Stewart spoke of discovering fame with “Twilight.” “When I started doing that movie, I was 17 and I was just a little inside-out person,” Stewart said. “I was walking around with all my blood on the outside of my body.”
Kidman replied: “I was 14. I remember Anthony Minghella saying to me, ‘You are skinless.’ I think that’s what you’re describing. Vulnerable, exposed, everything you are going through is for consumption.
