After discovering that her boyfriend is a serial killer known as The Rain Ripper, Mary (Vanessa Grasse) just wants a fresh start, but her new job at a gas station takes a deadly turn as her sanity starts to slip and the bodies start piling up in the new horror film Open 24 Hours. With the slasher out now on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, and VOD from 4Digital Media, we caught up with writer/director Padraig Reynolds in a new Q&a feature to discuss the long journey to getting his latest movie made, how the gas station from the end of his first film Rites of Spring inspired him to make Open 24 Hours, and how he used his father-in-law's raincoat to come up with the look for The Rain Ripper.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Padraig, and congratulations on Open 24 Hours! How and...

Ahead of the World premiere screening of Reborn at Arrow Video FrightFest Halloween – which takes place at Cineworld, Leicester Square on November 3rd 2018, Julian Richards discusses the torturerous challenges of Daddy’s Girl, why he wishes every actress was like Barbara Crampton and future plans, including directing the English language remake of Rabies.
After six years away from directing, you have two films, Reborn and Daddy’s Girl poised for distribution. Why these two very different films now?
My previous film Shiver was completed in 2012 and it took longer for me to get back into the directing saddle because of commitments I had to my sales company Jinga Films. The company was growing quickly and needed more of my time and energy. We had grown from handling three films a year to handling ten films a year and our titles were getting stronger. Sometimes a horror movie is so suspenseful that you don't recognize its flaws until later. A midnight viewing of Open 24 Hours not only kept me awake but on the edge of my seat for its entire running time. Director Padraig Reynolds proves that his underrated debut Rites of Spring signaled a solid talent for the horror genre and this film has me excited to see what he comes up with next. Mary (Vanessa Grasse) has just been released on parole. Her dour Parole Officer and best friend Debbie (Emily Tennant) are her only support system as she faces life after jail for setting her serial killer boyfriend James (Cole Vigue) on fire. Haunted by her complicity in his crimes, she experiences a near constant...

Open 24 Hours is your third time being represented at Frightfest Why is it important you show your movies at the UK’s premier festival?
FrightFest is the best horror festival in the world. It has the best fans and the best organisers a genre director could hope for. There is so much love and care that goes into the festival and I’m honored every time I get to be a part of it. I’m just happy that they let me keep coming back and showing my films. Everyone involved has become like a family to me and I really can’t thank them enough for helping me with my career and showing my films.
Where did you get the story concept for Open 24 Hours?
The idea of ‘Open 24 Hours’ came to me while I was shooting my first feature “Rites Of Spring” in Mississippi. We were scouting locations...

It’s been quite some time since I saw Padraig Reynolds’ debut feature Rites of Spring back at Glasgow Frightfest 2012 and since then Reynolds has been pretty silent on the directing front. We’re just over a month away from Halloween and there are no less than four major UK horror festivals on the horizon, so what better time to take a look at you choice of “home video” horror – with ten of the best independent horror movies to rent or buy on TheHorrorShow.TV

Mixing the slasher movie with reality TV doesn’t seem like the best idea for horror movie, especially considering the mainstream backlash against both genres, but surprisingly Camp Dread manages to overcome it’s much-maligned origins. Of course any slasher movie set at a summer camp is going to be filled with the tropes of the genre and this film is no different – although this time around the stereotypes and cliches which would typically hinder such a production actually work in its favour. Since the days when Dracula swooned his sweethearts with his hypnotic gaze to modern twinkling Twilight love connections, we horror fans have been obsessed with forbidden love. How many times in horror cinema have we seen a woman cling to her misshapen, monstrous lover? How many times have we seen a wretched man lament his dearly departed? We love messed up love stories, and we're taking a look at some of our favorite horror movie couples. These may not have been matches made in heaven, but… you know, they're close enough! Buffy and Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer Sure, Buffy fans will point to Angel as her one true love... and sure, that in and of itself is a pretty sordid tale of vampire/slayer love. But come on! If you want steamy, sexy, "it ain't right but it feels alright" love, you've got to go with Buffy and Spike.

But the following spring it began again with the vanishing of a string of young girls, most notably Wendy Mullins, honours student and valedictorian of her graduating class. For the next 24 years the disappearances continued. No bodies were ever recovered. Flash forward to 2008 and after a night out drowning her work-related sorrows, Rachel and her friend are drugged and taken captive by a strange old man right in the parking lot. At the same time a group of kidnappers hatch a plan to take and ransom the daughter of a wealthy industrialist. However their plan goes awry, and not just because one of the gang plans to double-cross his fellow kidnappers…

Pier Paolo Pasolini’S Trilogy Of Life (Criterion) Pier Paolo Pasolini was Italy’s last Neo-Realist, a product of post-ww II Europe who was fervently Catholic, openly gay, defiantly Marxist, and one of the most original voices of the 20th century’s second half. Before his brutal murder in 1975 (after the premiere of his still-controversial swan song, “Salo”), Pasolini directed a trilogy of films based on masterpieces of medieval literature: Boccaccio’s “The Decameron,” Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” and “The Thousand and One Nights (also known as “The Arabian Nights”). The three films celebrate the uninhibited, earthy, raw carnal nature of the original texts, leaving little to the imagination, but also offering Pasolini’s own very unique and pointed views on modern society, consumerism, religious and sexual mores (and hypocrisies), and an unexpurgated celebration of the human body, both male and female. Extraordinary production design by Dante Ferretti and another evocative,...

The upcoming indie creature feature, Rites of Spring has media outlets chattering, big time. Dare I say for good reason? This feature sounds like everything one could ask for from a horror film: malicious kidnapping, ransom… an absolutely grotesque monster. Sounds like a dream flick right? Padraig Reynolds writes and directs this seasonal chiller, which offers forth an impressive cast made up of Katherine Randolph (Jarhead), Anessa Ramsey (The Signal), Skylar Burke, Hannah Bryan (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies), Shanna Forrestall (The Last Exorcism) and indie horror stud, Aj Bowen (The House of the Devil).

*here be some spoilers. Director/writer: Padraig Reynolds. Cast: Katherine Randolph, Anessa Ramsey, Aj Bowen, Hannah Bryan, Marco St. John and Sonny Marinelli. Rites of Spring is Padraig Reynolds' first feature as director. This title is meant to be the first of three pictures that deal with a Pagan god, of sorts. The film found here brings two genres together in a compelling fashion: a crime thriller and a horror film. This blend of formulas brings new life into the slasher film. As well, Reynolds, shows a lot of quality and dedication in this first feature. Rites of Spring begins with a series of disappearances. Unbelievably, these disappearances continues for twenty-four years. And, no one thought to call the FBI? With that unusual plot point aside, an older farmer stalks a couple of women leaving a nearby bar. He captures them. Later, he tortures, humiliates, and bleeds these two...

Indie horror movies are a dime a dozen, but there's something particularly intriguing about Rites of Spring.
