Yes, for a programme consisting of CGI caricatures of 'celebrities', Headcases has an impressive credit list and more writers than Bob Hope. Yet it still looks like it was created in an afternoon by a bored computer programmer and intended for YouTube. Okay, so that's harsh. But Headcases - trumpeted as the heir to Spitting Image and more recently 2DTV - is so one-dimensional, so obvious, so thunderously unfunny and so devoid of wit or originality it simply beggars belief as to how it got commissioned. Here's a typical episode - David Cameron is lampooned as a posh toff. Posh Spice is portrayed as an obnoxious glory-seeker. David Beckham is thick, Gordon Brown is mean, Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse are shambling druggies. And get this - Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet and Judi Dench are given 'chav' voices! And that's it. It's as toothless and as bereft as an unambitious children's comic with the best pages torn out. It's like Heat magazine brought to life. This isn't parody, satire or social comment, and it sure as hell isn't comedy. When I remember how the Sunday 10pm slot on ITV once played host to Whoops Apocalypse and Hot Metal, but now has nothing better to offer than Headcases, I take that a pretty fair indication of how far standards have slumped in the past two decades.
