Dateline Gives Lowly NBC Another Win

22 June 2009 2:07 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news »

Two one-hour real-life crime stories on NBC's Dateline magazine program fared better than any entertainment program broadcast during primetime on Friday. Not that it had much serious competition -- since Friday night is fast becoming as big a loser as Saturdays for the major networks, which have watched Friday ratings plunge in recent years. Dateline averaged 5.45 million viewers on Friday, peaking in the final half-hour with 6.03 million. But earlier in the evening, NBC's returning The Chopping Block, drew just 1.95 viewers -- and that wasn't even the worst-rated show. That distinction went to ABC's animated The Goode Family, which counted $1.54 million. »

The Chopping Block: NBC Cancels Reality TV Show After Three Episodes

27 March 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

To no surprise, NBC has cancelled its latest foray into reality television. The show that has been on the "chopping block" since it premiered has come to an end. The network series has cancelled The Chopping Block.

Based on an Australian reality series of the same name, The Chopping Block stars celebrated chef and restaurateur Marco Pierre White (from the UK's Hell's Kitchen). The British Michelin star chef splits eight newbie cooks and restaurateurs up into two teams of four couples each. Each side is given an empty restaurant space in the middle of Manhattan. Working together, they must plan, open, and operate a restaurant in the most competitive city in the world.

In some ways, the series is similar to Fox's Hell's Kitchen show -- except that it didn't attract nearly as many viewers. The March 11th premiere attracted an embarrassing number of viewers, just 3.77 million with a 1.4/4 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. »

NBC’s The Chopping Block, Dollhouse, True Blood, And The New Ratings Game

27 March 2009 12:28 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

After a whopping three episodes aired, NBC has pulled the plug on the new cooking competition show The Chopping Block. It seems I barely put together an article on the thing, and though my reaction was rather middle-of-the-road, NBC needs a bit of a wake-up call. I didn't love the show, and though he may be a genius of the culinary world, Marco Pierre White just doesn't make for really entertaining television. My main problem with the show was the change in format, which didn't make any sense to me. But, none of that really matters. Whatever the ratings may do, pulling the plug on a competition show is like closing your restaurant after being open for two days. If you can't figure out a way to get enough viewers to make it through one run of a competition, don't play the game to start with. There are a lot »

Chopping Block Chopped

27 March 2009 2:37 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

After receiving some of the lowest ratings of this or any other season, NBC's Chopping Block got chopped from the network's schedule Thursday. The cooking competition series hosted by chef Marco Pierre White will be replaced with reruns of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on Wednesday nights. The network indicated that viewers will be able to learn who won the competition when the remaining episodes air at a later date. However, there was some speculation that NBC might dump those episodes on one of its Internet or cable outlets. »

Idol Rises On Wednesday

26 March 2009 2:45 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

An unusual Wednesday-night performance edition of American Idol -- brought about because of President Obama's primetime news conference on Tuesday -- overwhelmed most of the competition, averaging 25.60 million viewers and peaking in the final half hour with 27.44 million. The show crushed the second week of ABC's new sitcom Better off Ted, which drew only 4.69 million viewers. Worse yet, NBC's new cooking competition show The Chopping Block looked like it had its head on one as it drew just 2.60 million viewers. »

Idol Up Against Rivals; Down Against Itself

19 March 2009 2:36 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

American Idol once again proved to be unchallengeable Wednesday night as it drew 23.07 million viewers. The only program that it is doing poorly against is itself -- compared with its numbers during previous seasons, that is. Last year, for example, the program attracted 26.08 million viewers on the comparable night. On ABC, the series premiere of Better Off Ted proved disappointing as it attracted just 5.80 million viewers, despite much applause from critics (as well as significant dissent). Once again, NBC's lineup finished last for the evening with ratings chopped for the second week of The Chopping Block, which saw just 3.46 million viewers tune in. »

Idol Loses 3 Million Viewers, Still Wins

12 March 2009 2:36 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Fox's American Idol on Wednesday night may have captured 3 million fewer viewers than it did a year earlier -- but no other regular show on TV can draw 24.90 million viewers as Idol did. Even better news for Fox was a big win in the 8:00 p.m. hour for its recently relocated drama Lie to Me, which drew 11.12 million viewers, up from 10.20 million a week earlier. CBS took the lead at 10:00 p.m. with CSI: New York which counted 13.52 million viewers. Meanwhile, struggling NBC debuted the new reality game show The Chopping Block at 8:00 p.m. -- and got chopped. The show attracted only 3.98 million viewers in the 8:00 p.m. hour versus 10.19 million for Deal or No Deal, which occupied that spot last year. »

Clips From New NBC Food Fight 'The Chopping Block'

6 March 2009 1:19 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

With many restaurant-themed reality series gaining momentum on television, NBC is looking forward to air one of its own piece, "The Chopping Block". The show put renown chef Marco Pierre White as the host, judge and role figure, but what exactly and how is it different from the rest are explained through the promo as well as clips.

The promo explains why Chef Marco is notorious, how the game will be played and what prize awaits for the winner. The three clips that are compiled in a player meanwhile, give a look on the teams, the first challenge they meet, the couples crashing in the kitchen, and Marco judging on the dishes.

To be premiered on March 11, the show sees cooks given a grilling over the course of the series. The teams, which are made up of couples, will be tested in challenges that vary from having less than a »

The Chopping Block - NBCs Last Restaurant Standing

2 March 2009 8:45 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

NBC is bringing Last Restaurant Standing to America under the (apparently) hipper moniker The Chopping Block, and they've managed somehow to create a cooking/restaurant show that doesn't star Gordon Ramsay. This particular venture into culinary reality stars Marco Pierre White (at one time involved with the UK's version of Hell's Kitchen), Ramsay's mentor, competition, friend, and nemesis. Theirs is the most bizarre of relationships, which has found White appearing on Ramsay's BBC shows at one time, and the two feuding bitterly at others. Until now, only Ramsay has made his way to American television. Now White is crossing the pond with a show that has proven itself (at least to some degree) on BBC. Last Restaurant Standing has taken things on a slightly different spin, by giving couples restaurants to run, and closing one restaurant each week. The show stars restaurateur Raymond Blanc, and offers up weekly challenges and miles of critique. »

Super Bowl TV Spot of New Reality Show 'The Chopping Block'

2 February 2009 11:33 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

NBC gave a sneak peek to their new reality cooking show during the Super Bowl Xliii breaks. "The Chopping Block" is the latest TV show about cooking that offers more than chopping and presents the "world's greatest chef", Marco Pierre White (U.K.'s "Hell's Kitchen") as host.

"Before you kill something, think about it. Kill something for the right reasons. Kill it to eat it," Marco said in the commercial. Each week, eight teams will be split into two restaurants in the middle of Manhattan and compete against each other as well as thousands others in winning customers' favor.

Food critics are assigned to observe the chaos of the kitchen and White will provide his reviews. The team performing worst will plead the case in a trial where a couple will be sent home. "They do not know how hard it's gonna be," Marco said in the end of the ad. »
