... part of a long debate
dromasca7 June 2008
This film on the European TV channel ARTE brings interesting information about the collections of erotic art, some of them private, some of them kept in secret areas of the public museums and libraries. As we enter the 21ist century erotic art seems to make it slowly towards mainstream, but borders of the allowed and of the forbidden are still vague, and the debate about the inclusion of eroticism in serious art is still ongoing. This is not a new debate by any means, and the movie mentions - although maybe too much in passing - the fact that erotic art was much more accepted in the ancient times, and that church-related restrictions are present only in the last thousand of years. There is nothing sensational or new as ideas in this film, although many of the collectors are unknown to the great public. Mentioning Ancient Rome is fine, although all the erotic art from Asia or India is missing. Overall there are interesting things in this documentary, but nothing really sensational or new as ideas.
