Well made, though not easily understood
planktonrules26 November 2008
This is a very unusual short film in two ways. First, the line between the narrative and acting is rather blurred. At times, the film seems to stop as the director and crew reposition the cameras or give instructions to the boy who stars in the picture. However, you aren't really sure if this is supposed to be part of the plot or if it's a way to let the audience know that this is all fiction because the characters in this story are film makers. This allows for multiple interpretations as to what is happening. Second, when the boy's mother is being emotionally abused and a bit manhandled, the child's reaction is not typical of what you see in films, though it is a realistic reaction. Instead of the boy becoming upset at his mother's plight, the child seems disconnected and even behaves as if he, too, has contempt for her authority. Both these choices make for a fascinating film--one that takes risks and provokes the audience to think.
