- Max takes up the tuba. Alec and Judi get locked in a storeroom then when Alec's careless match starts a fire, and the only exit is the window, Judi falls to her death.
- The occupants of Grange Hill seem set to become stir crazy when heavy rain makes it impossible to go outside. Max hears a brass band practising somewhere, and seeks it out. The music teacher is skeptical of Max's enthusiasm, because previously he's never lasted very long with any instrument - but perhaps there is one instrument he could tackle... A short while later, Zoe and Adam hear a noise like an elephant dying - it's Max trying out the tuba! Later, Max is determined to play the instrument - if only he could take it home to practise. Cathy, Alec's social worker, encounters him outside school, finding him in a badly depressed mood. She tells him the address of a hostel to stay at, but Alec has other ideas and heads into school, stealing a couple of sandwiches from some Year Sevens on the way in. He encounters Wayne on the way (who is his usual aggressive self), and then steps into the Headmaster's office. In art, Kelly and Evelyn muck around, and accidentally spill paint on Judi's skirt. She is sent to the store room to get some white spirit. Alec finds he's getting nowhere with Mr. Robson, and leaves: on the way he opens a drawer of confiscated items, and grabs some cigarettes and a lighter, also all the biscuits from a plate. Then, he sees Judi on her way to get keys for the storeroom. Alec follows Judi into the storeroom, which is filled with various bottles of chemicals. She jumps when she hears him enter, dropping the container of white spirit onto the floor, which spills its contents. Alec closes the door behind him - "Hello Judi," he says. He questions her about his exclusion - was it her who demanded that he be kept away from school? She tells him that although he sometimes scares her, he's usually okay. She offers to tell Mr. Robson that she would support him returning to school. Meanwhile, Wayne is impatient for Judi's return, and ignoring Mr. Brisley, marches on upstairs to find her. When Alec hears Wayne outside, his mood changes, and he pulls Judi to one side, his hand over her mouth. Wayne talks to Mr. Jones, who tells him to get back to class, and to lock up the store room. Wayne turns the key, and Alec and Judi are locked in. Alec lights a cigarette, and Judi discovers that she can't leave. When Wayne returns the key, he becomes increasingly convinced that Alec is around somewhere with Judi. In the store room, Alec lights another cigarette, and foolishly drops the spent match on the floor - a cloth now soaked with white spirits immediately bursts into flames. Judi screams, and bangs on the door while Alec tries to extinguish the flames with his jacket, but it's no good, and the fire spreads in the confined space. Unable to breath, Alec opens the window, and the two look out to the playground far below. The fire rages on like a furnace behind them, and smoke reaches the detector outside, starting off the fire alarm. Athletic Alec tells Judi they must jump across to the stairs, and he leaps across to safety. Judi can't manage it: she hangs desperately onto the window's edge. From below, crowds gather to watch in horror. Wayne shouts out "Judi!", and she loses her footing, screams and falls. She lands on her back, her head hits the concrete, and Wayne shouts an anguished "No". Judi's eyes stare up, as Wayne kneels down beside her and he knows there's nothing anyone can do. He looks silently up at Alec who's shaking his head in disbelief at the events, and a fire engine drives through the school gates...—Geffers
