The first of several episodes about the Calypso's journey to Antarctica
planktonrules26 March 2017
This is the first of a string of episodes about the Calypso's extended journey to Antarctica. Because of this, it tends to be less specific as usual and is more an overview. For example, you see the crew interacting just a bit with penguins...but a later episode is solely about these wonderful creatures. The 'fire and ice' in the title refers to the crew's visit to a volcanic region of the continent and you see a bit of exploration around these geothermals. There also are some BRIEF dives...showing how rich and abundant sea life can be in these warm portions of Antarctica. And, sadly, you learn A BIT about the loss of one of the crew members...and not the last, as Philippe Cousteau will die several years later during one of the voyages.

All in all, an enjoyable episode but not a memorable one because it did seem so very brief and episodic.
