"MLB Slugfest 2004" had a great sense of humor and arcade action, which made for a truly fun baseball game. It didn't matter that real major leaguers don't punch a guy off-base for an out or dropkick an opponent as they're running into home, because it was all part of the hyper-exaggerated action. It was all over-the-top, and totally ingratiating.
The ballparks were all beautifully rendered, and the players were realistic, which made the cartoony antics all the more amusing. Tim Kitzrow and Jimmy Shorts has some great one-liners, and some of the batters' reactions after a good beaning (which would probably kill an ordinary man) were pretty funny. And it really was a thrill to knock some of the pitches out of the park.
The only bad thing I can think of is the game's AI, which didn't happen often. But there was that one time when bases were loaded, the game was tied, and the pitcher beaned me.
. . . But I take that back, because it was just too funny.
And the game was too damn fun. I can pop this in today and still get hours of play out of it. It doesn't get any better than that.
10/10
