As this episode opens two girls taking part on a paintballing game are shot by an overenthusiastic player; as he celebrates he is attacked by an unseen creature. Back at ARC Connor is demonstrating his new anomaly detector when news of the attack comes in. He is certain his machine isn't faulty but others think the appearance of a large predator suggests otherwise. The team heads to the site of the body; a theme park near the paintballing site; it is clear that he was killed by a big cat and there is some suspicion that it could have been a lion as a nearby farmer had been prosecuted a few years earlier for illegally breeding lion cubs. Inevitably this is soon proved to be incorrect and the killer is identified as a sabre-toothed cat. While most of the team are searching for the beast Connor nearly shoots a park mascot and Stephen befriends park worker Valerie Irwin who is keen to know just what the team are looking for.
This is another enjoyable episode with an impressive creature as well as hints at some sinister goings on at ARC which appear to be linked to Connor's new girlfriend. There are some obvious, and rather fun, nods to the film 'Jaws' as the park manager refuses to evacuate the park even after a mauled body has been found it was satisfying to seem him become the next victim. The specially effects have inevitably dated a bit but are still good enough and are real enough to be frightening when they need to be. The regular cast do a good job; I particularly liked Lucy Brown's performance as PR woman Lucy Brown as she flirts with anybody she needs to persuade to help suppress news of the creatures. Guest star Gillian Kearney is great as Valerie; a somewhat naïve but sympathetic character one of the series' more memorably one-episode characters. The ongoing suggestion that some people at ARC are up to something sinister is interesting and I'm sure will become even more interesting as the season progresses. Overall another impressive episode.
