Avergage and nothing more
sven-laanemets17 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie "Talve" is an average comedy, whose main characters are from the books of O. Luts and from the movies that are based on those books. The movie itself is not very well connected to the previous ones made by Arvo Kruusement. For example, the movie "Sügis" ends with the birth of Endla and Endel, the children of the Kiir family. But in "Talve" neither of them are being mentioned and father Kiir now has a son called Fritz, who, by the look of his age, should have been born way before Endla and Endel. In addition, nobody mentions with a word, what has happened to Jorh Kiir's wife and sister-in-law or to his brothers (it would not have been a big effort, if Kiir had simply said that Bruno-Benno-Bernhard finally managed to go to Paris, as he had always dreamed of). About the Toots' family - why was the head of a relatively wealthy family deported, but the other members were left untouched? There is a hint that it happened because of Kiir, but if that was the case, then Joosep Toots would not have been deported, but arrested. And what happened to the other children that Joosep and Teele had? There are awfully lot of relations in this movie: Teele is missing Joosep. Teele herself is seen as a wife material in the eyes of merchant Ollep and Kiir. Teele's son Oskar (a reference to Oskar Luts?) is being seduced by Ollep's daughter Selma, who herself is being seduced by Fritz. Oskar on the other hand has eyes for Selma and later for Maie too (which is strange that he did not notice Maie before Arnold's arrival, although they were "next door" neighbours...). Maie herself is being noticed by Arnold Tali, but it seems that he is only paying attention to her because it is a tradition in that part of the country to be a part of a love triangle, or because the director of the movie told him to do so. Arnold Tali remains a rather of a background character throughout the movie. It looks like his name is "Arnold" only because 1) it resembles to his father's name (Arno) and 2) because one can make Schwarzenegger-jokes ("It's Austrian Arnold!"). Which is quite inappropriate, because it is too modern, as is the expression that Oskar does: "Uh-oh!" Most of the movie twirls around Oskar, played by Karl Robert Saaremäe who is constantly overacting. One might think that Oskar is a village idiot with a bit more wealth than an average farmer. When I watched the movie I wondered whether it was really necessary to bring Imelik (played by Rein Aedma) into this picture just for couple of minutes to make outdated jokes about his name. If it was not possible to include Tõnisson, Arno or most of the characters from prequels (even as voices or memories), then why was it a good idea to give Imelik an insignificant role? And was it impossible to find someone who could tell to the producers that the southern Estonians use the word "tunamullu" instead of the phrase "ülemöödunud aastal" ("a year before last year")? Overall, the movie is watchable, one can smile, but not laugh out loud. It cannot be compared to the ones A. Kruusement made. "Talve" will probably not become a cult-movie like "Kevade", "Suvi" and "Sügis" have.

Not a great round-up of the tetralogy, but no flop either
BeneCumb1 November 2020
One can definitely argue several aspects here, starting with the need for it and possible twisting of Oskar Luts´s grasps and ideas, but the approach is pleasant, performances good, and the beautiful scenery emphasizes the mood of "good old days" - in spite of World War II around. True, in Talve, the main characters are the young trying to live and dream within the present German and previous Soviet occupation, the older generations are in the background, with Harry Kõrvits as Ollep being an interesting and mostly humorous addition...

Talve is apparently not a film for wider international audience, but Finns and Latvians might find something in common at least. Particularly, if they have seen Kevade, Suvi and Sügis as well.

8 for performances, 6 for script = 7.

Awful movie

Awful movie not worth of watching. Story is extremly bad and actors are made to repeat their punchlines from Kevade over and over again. Waste of time and money.

Summer in winter
ray1159 February 2020
This is a fun summer movie about the life in a small village during 1942. War is referenced but not the main topic here, it's the relations and love between young people.

Fun fact: the movie has headline Winter but has nothing to do with winter. This is 4th and final chapter in movie series started by Kevade (Spring, 1969).

It is amazing to see that four actors form the first movie are still playing the same characters 51 years later. You don't have to be seen the previous movies because this has new main characters and new plot. But without previous movies you probably don't rate over 7/10, it has multiple jokes and references to the events happened before.

Best acting for me: Franz Malmsten as son of Arno Tali - that's exactly I imagined he would be Henessi Schmidt as a girl messing up boys' heads - suitable for every movie.

Wonderful

Warning: Spoilers
I guess if you are not an estonian, you probably won't understand it. Loved every second of it. The movie was so simple yet had a deep meaning. The actors were amazing and the plot didn't disappoint me either. This is a typical estonian movie and also reminded me of home..

A sequiel that isn't a sequiel actually but a separate story
pandeero20 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was very curious for watching this movie after seen the three prequiels "Kevade", "Suvi" and "Sügis". Yesterday, I watched it. After ten first minutes, I was hoping the content to get going. After an hour I was still hoping that the movie would became interesting soon. After the end, I had a feeling that I hadn't seen the movie at all. Why did I have this feeling?

All the prequiels had a main character: "Kevade" had Arno Tali, "Suvi" had Joosep Toots, "Sügis" had Jorh Aadniel Kiir. "Talve" didn't have a main character or the main character was oskar. However, the main characters of prequiels were all apparent in the first part "Kevade", oskar wasn't. This makes "Talve" awkward.

All the prequiels were well-connected to each one. "Kevade" showed pupils, "Suvi" as they were about to create families, "Sügis" as well, and I had expected to see how they spend their elderly days in "Talve". This isn't the case. Some reappearing characters are there though however their part is very small: Teele just appears for some scenes, Imelik appears for only one scene, Lesta plays a small role as a pharmaceut (Oskar Luts was also a pharmaceut). Margus Lepa plays his role as manipulating Jorh Aadniel Kiir very well however his role feels very small in comparison to prequiels. Someone else mentioned already that many characters from preqiels are missing. They tell that Tõnisson went to Sweden and at the end, we can recognize that Arno Tali was dead. Tõnisson would've been the main character for this movie. Or Lesta who didn't get much credit before. Instead of showing the elderly life of the main characters from "Kevade", the author concentrated on children and other new characters that weren't even mentioned before. Teele was the wife of Joosep, right? And Joosep was from Ülesoo. However in "Talve", Teele appears to be of Raja again. Some actors are dead. Some live. How much effort did Ergo Kuld give to get all the possible actors back to "Talve" to make a grand finale? I think that he didn't put enough energy in it. For instance, it would be interesting to see the mother of Arno Tali once again, even for a moment. The actress still lives on Earth.

New characters are still enjoyable however one must comprehend that they don't belong. Maybe Arnold belongs but none of the others as they don't seem to be related to prequiels as seen previously.

The prequiels were all very enjoyable. The last prequiel "Sügis" was made in my time on Earth. I remember going to cinema with the mother of my body to see it. They covered a relatively long timeframe or I just have this feeling. I feel that a lot was happening in them. Funny moments they had. "Talve" has no funny moments at all. The supposedly funny moments are like kicking someone's ass. I didn't laugh a single time during watching "Talve".

All the prequiels were made by Arvo Kruusement. Maybe he's too old for making yet another movie however it's not good to switch the regisseur before the end has been reached. Ergo Kuld and margus algus are famous for their series: "Ühikarotid", "Kalevipojad", "Ment", "Reetur". I get that Ergo wanted to make a start in the movie industry however he could've started with his own topic not a sequiel to a famous movie series. They just can't make a movie. "Talve" feels like the first episode of a series. And there's no second episode which makes the situation awful. We could argue that what if they didn't change Oskar Luts's content and the reason for this crap was the author of the belletristic himself. However we have no proof that there are more than four pages of the original author publicized at all. This makes me suspect that martin algus invented most of "Talve". Setting the weight on new characters isn't a good approach for a grand finale. The final part must conclude everything not create a new story. It would've been nice to see some recalls from prequiels at least as we saw in "Sügis". None of this happened.

This all makes "Talve" in comparison to "Star Wars" a "Star Wars" movie not "Star Wars" itself if spoken allegorically.

I propose that someone powerful could do a remake for "Talve" with the real content that suits to all the prequiels. This version of "Talve" is like laughing at the trilogy.

I would rate this movie to at least "5" if it would be just a movie itself. This movie though refers to its prequiels and therefore, I can't rate more than "0". All or nothing. This one's rather nothing. If margus algus and Ergo Kuld were my pupils, I'd request them to redo the task.
