Paddington: The Man Behind the Bear
Prismark108 June 2020
Hugh Bonneville who plays Mr Brown in the Paddington movies narrates this documentary on the bear's creator, Michael Bond.

Bond was a cameraman for the BBC and worked on Blue Peter. He once came across a solitary bear in a toy shop and purchased it. He got the idea to call it Paddington.

Bond's family had taken in evacuees and displaced Jewish children during World War 2. Bond wanted to highlight the plight of refugees, hence why Paddington Bear comes from darkest Peru with a note, "Please look after this bear."

A brisk walk through of Bond's life which also serves as a promotion to the Paddington movies. I would had liked to see more of the making of the Paddinton television series which I used to watch as a child. It does end with Paddington's famous recreation of Singin in the Rain.

Bond's family and various celebrities pay tribute and give readings. Jeremy Clarkson's parents once produced bootleg Paddington Bear merchandise. It was good quality so Michael Bond quickly agreed a deal with them.

I did have a chuckle to learn that Michael Bond, who had died in 2017 is buried in Paddington Old Cemetery.
