Fun and entertaining
Gordon-1120 October 2008
This short animation is about a drunk man who is trapped in an endless staircase.

"Hallucii" packed a lot of thrill and fun in just 4 minutes. The animation is cute, smooth and likable. The endless staircase is spooky! The drunk man's attempt to escape, and his subsequent frustration is well portrayed. It makes me wonder what I would do if I was in such a staircase.

The great background music also enhances the suspense. I seem to hear a Mission Impossible like tune when the drunk man climbs a rope, which suits the scene and brings me a smile.

I really liked "Hallucii", and I look forward to watching more of Goo-Shun Wang's work.

Esched in My Memory

Goo-Shun Wang has created a nice little computer-generated cartoon in HALLUCII. Its inspiration is one of those M.C. Escher posters which decorated many a wall in the 1960s and 1970s, in which endless ranks of people walked up or down stairs, chatting with each other, or lost in thought. Those stairs never changed direction; they went up forever, yet were severely closed. It was an optical illusion that fascinated many a stoner.

The prisoners of those stairs never seemed to realize their fates. What if they had? HALLUCII offers us a cartoon answer to that with a Terry Gilliam character. Although I lost interest towards the end of the cartoon (having exhausted the inherent mystery of the poster on my brother's wall about 1968), this cartoon is a pleasant exercise in craftsmanship and memory.
