Mad Man Dan And His Dinner With 2009
Editor’s Note: To be honest, I’m not a list guy. I think they’re trite, unimaginative, and when I look at the other horror sites, their lists are all generally the same. Sure, there may be some movement between what’s #3 on one site’s list and #4 on another, but must I see the same 10 or 20 flicks from the last year or decade, best or worst, ad nauseam? So when Mike and I sat down a few weeks back, we agreed not to do the same, humdrum lists.
And then Mad Man Dan came into the picture.
Bringing his uniquely psychotic perspective to the whole idea of lists, then blowing up that idea and subverting it brought a fresh angle to lists. And so I proudly present Mad Man Dan Price’s Dinner with 2009. We don’t censor the Mad Man

2009 was another big year for movies thanks to, in varying degrees, the recession, 3D ticket prices and Taylor Lautner’s abs. For funsies we have compiled a fairly trivial movie calendar for the year that was. Here you will find all the big events that, for whatever reason, may not have gotten a lot of media coverage. Hit the jump to begin reminiscing about the past 12 months:
January
9- David S. Goyer does his best to stop Odette Yustman from ever getting another leading role in a film. (The Unborn)
16- Mall cops lose what little public respect they had. (Paul Blart: Mall Cop)
23- Brendan Fraser ruins an otherwise perfectly good British film. (Inkheart)
30- Liam Neeson gains 20,000 cool points. (Taken)
-
February
6- Steve Martin makes a big mistake. (The Pink Panther 2)
13- The rules of scary movies are upheld. (Friday the 13th)
20- Madea goes to jail.

With the proliferation of Top Tens and Best Of lists on the internet at this time of year we wanted to try something a little different.
2009 was an important year for the business of cinema; games were changed with the acquiescence of audiences to the notion of 3D, low budgets met with large returns, old franchises spawned reboots and rebakes with varying success, the British film industry remained strong and gave us some bright new stars in our sky.
We asked our writers to come up with an alternative set of awards which would honour those films, directors and actors who made 2009 such an enjoyable year. Strong emotions are rendered in strong language, be warned if words offend.
So, here now, I present to you our awards for 2009 – The Truffles.
Tracy
2009 meant, for me, the respectable return to sci-fi. Star Trek, District 9, Moon and now Avatar showed that sci-fi

In addition, the boys also made some picks of one or two of the highlights of the entire ‘aughts’ decade.
Some of the topics discussed include Chris and Matt’s favorite movies of 2009 such as Star Trek, Inglourious Basterds, Zombieland and Drag Me to Hell as well as some of their favorite 2009 tv shows including Community, Cougar Town and continuing series such as Fringe and The Big Bang Theory. The boys also made some picks of their favorite comics and games of the year including Blackest Night, Old Man Logan, Modern Warfare 2 and Ultimate Alliance 2.

From the start, the 2009 forecast seemed a little Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, but when Amelia took us flying Up In The Air, past the blinding Whiteout, we could see A New Moon. A Bright Star rose above the horizon of the Red Cliff and we found ourselves on The Road to some Precious moments in film. Those Inglourious Basterds saved us from the claws of Wolverine…he even tried to Drag Me To Hell! The night Watchmen kept a close eye on us as we spent a second Night In The Museum, saw the Dawn Of The Dinosaurs, and another Ice Age. We became Astro Boy, rocketed off to Planet 51, and witnessed the epic Monsters vs. Aliens battle. Some were slyly introduced to The Fantastic Mr. Fox, many cheered as both Ponyo and Coraline attempted to save their families and the world, and we sailed with Max

The year in horror notched some great strides for genre filmmaking (Paranormal Activity, anyone?) but sadly, there were disappointments galore. For starters, some of the year's highest-profile horror pics turned dismal results at the box office. Too many anticipated films got the shaft with bare-minimum theatrical runs. And what was with all of those lame vampires?
See what got our blood boiling this year in horror in no particular order.
Drag Me to Hell's Box Office
After breaking box office records and grossing almost $2.5 billion with his last three consecutive films (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3), you've got to think Sam Raimi was a little underwhelmed to gross a paltry $86

Even as moviegoers look ahead towards 2010, it cannot be denied that 2009 was a banner year for blockbuster cinema. Hot off the heels of the domestic box office's single most lucrative weekend ever, there is no question that both Hollywood and the indie scene alike had their best game-faces on this year, resulting in a science-fiction renaissance through the likes of "District 9" as well as more intimate (though no less dangerous) affairs as seen in "The Hurt Locker."
While a movie is only as good as the sum of its parts, it's clear that the films of 2009 had some very, very good parts. From intergalactic space battles to an intense conversational showdown over a glass of milk, these are our nine

It seems that the Cannes film festival got things right this year, even if audiences seemed to not quite get the quality of the competition. After consideration of a wealth of films from around the world, big and small, I find my end of year top-10 list peppered with films of heady considerations tackled with both visual bombast and narrative elegance. While 2007 will likely be remembered as the strongest year of the aughts for cinema, 2009 is one of sheer variety. There be lots of surprises and pleasures of both the cerebral and visceral kind.
10) The Limits of Control - Jim Jarmusch's deliberate ode to architecture, form and patient viewing is bumped into masterpiece territory by the wonderful cinematography of Christopher Doyle and the handsome (dude can Wear a suit) figure of Isaach De Bankolé.
9) Mr. Nobody - Has quantum physics and romantic love ever been successfully combined in a large-scale science fiction epic?

El Guapo's Top Ten Movies Of 2009!
Now that the year has come to a close, let's take a look at what I thought were the best movies of 2009. And believe it or not, 2009 had a lot of great movies. There were dramas, comedies, science fiction films, pretty much anything and everything one could hope for came out this year. From giant robot movies to tender love stories to comedies that had you laughing until you got a hernia, 2009 was one of the better years in cinema.Granted, I have not seen every movie that came out this year. I missed Up in the Air, Anti-Christ, A Simple Man and the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. So don't get all bent out of shape when you don't see those films on my list. Like last year's list I'm sure there will be some choices on here that will have you scratching

When Jennifer’S Body was released to theaters, I distinctly remember the movie being upstaged by Megan Fox and Diablo Cody. Media conversation seemed to waver between championing them for being brunettes with tattoos, or furiously deriding them for being an attractive young actress and Oscar-winning screenwriter respectively. Despite Megan Fox’s status as a genuine movie star according to those magazines I always see in supermarket checkouts, it appears that a public hatred has centered on her finding great success because of or possibly in spite of being ludicrously hot, while legions of fans rabidly adore her and are possibly aware that she is a professional actress. Meanwhile the story of Diablo Cody winning our hearts with a screenplay full of pithy quips after drudging her living as a stripper continues to bore anyone who has actually been to Los Angeles and therefore knows that every single person living there is a stripper,

Rather than tell you what I think I should, I decided to come clean on this list. For instance, I am aware that A Serious Man might technically and artistically be a cut above some of these, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much. I’ll also preface this by saying since I was covering most of the main-stream movies this year, there were a lot of independent movies I didn’t see, so they may not appear on the list. The film title links to a review when applicable.
Up In The Air – Buoyed by a trio of fantastic actors, I found this movie to be utterly charming. Directed by Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno), the movie is touching, prescient, original, and funny. Vera Farmiga, George Clooney and Anna Kendrick all received Golden Globe acting nominations. George Clooney’s depiction of a traveling man who

The people had spoken and they picked "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" as both the Best Action Movie of 2009 and the Worst Movie of the Year!

'Avatar' - 14%

'Up in the Air' - 2%

George Clooney's Up In The Air has topped another leading film poll as the best movie of 2009.
Director Jason Reitman's film, which also stars Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga, has beaten Drag Me To Hell and The Hurt Locker to the top spot on website MovieHole.net's end-of-year list.
Compiled by revered producer/writer Clint Morris, who edits the site, Adventureland and (500) Days of Summer round out the top five.
District 9, Watchmen, Star Trek, The Boat That Rocked (aka Pirate Radio) and Fan Boys also made the top 10.

Six months ago, at 2009's halfway mark, I noted a hot, fast-rising trend: onscreen vomiting. And not the discreet kind, either, where someone is hunched over a toilet and we hear sounds but don't see any actual barf. I'm talking about movies where you actually see the chunder as it spews from the person's mouth. That kind of thing used to be rare in movies -- but not this year!
As of June, we'd seen it in Adventureland, The Haunting in Connecticut, Drag Me to Hell, Observe and Report, The Hangover, Year One, My Sister's Keeper, and I Love You, Man. Since that first post, I spotted 10 more: The International, Miss March, Thirst, District 9, Jennifer's Body, Zombieland, The Road, The Fourth Kind, Gentlemen Broncos, and Precious. That's 18 puke movies in one year. A new record?? I can only assume.
Why the excess of ralphing? The obvious answer would be that it's funny,

Top 25 Movies of 2009
Introduction, Honorable Mentions and Movies #21 - 25
What's your overall opinion of the movies of 2009? I ask because moving into December I would have called it a downer year, and if you base your opinion of a year's worth of movies on the blockbusters of the year you may be a bit mixed. While films such as Star Trek, District 9 and Avatar found fans all around the world, films such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator Salvation, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Angels and Demons and Watchmen were met with mixed-to-highly-negative reviews from critics and filmgoers alike. A lot of money was made, but I think we all know money doesn't always translate to quality.
There were some out of the blue surprises such as The Hangover and Paranormal Activity and Pixar again impressed us all with Up. Personally, it's the smaller to mid-level films

There were a lot of great films in 2009 but unfortunately most of them did not come from the horror genre. I feel like most of my year was wasted watching bad 3D gimmicks (The Final Destination), boring and uncreative remakes (Friday the 13th) and comedies disguised as horror films (Jennifer's Body)... Even the films that made our list barely elicit any kind of excitement from me; while entertaining Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell felt lost in the Summer movie season, and Michael Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat didn't seem like is was worth the very long wait. Paranormal Activity just gave me Blair Witch Déjà vu and unfortunately I managed to miss Zombieland in theaters.

You can always count on the studio horror titles (the ones worth seeing, like Drag Me to Hell and Paranormal Activity) to show up on DVD, like clockwork, only a few short months after their theatrical release. That's a reliable and comforting schedule for the horror geek who constantly needs something new to watch, savor, and then listen to a commentary on.
And that's probably why the old-school no-nonsense horror film fans love the "catalog" releases so much. They're like buried treasure sprinkled across the DVD shops. "Hey, they're putting out Face Chompers 2 from '87! And they put back the crotch-bite scene! And there's a cast commentary!" Yeah, stuff like that. Big time fun. So with

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year?

We’ve previously seen a domestic trailer for Mel Gibon’s latest movie (no, not the one with him running around the street with a beaver attached to his arm!), Edge of Darkness which is in a whole different genre!
Edge of Darkness is directed by BAFTA nominee Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and based on the BBC BAFTA award winning mini-series of the same name. Gibson leads an impressive cast including BAFTA nominee Ray Winstone (The Departed, Beowulf), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me To Hell). Academy Award® winner Graham King (The Departed, The Aviator) and Michael Wearing (BBC mini-series The Edge of Darkness) co-produced the film.
It’s due for release 29th January and we hope to get a review to you in the very near future. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments.
