I'll Take You There

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was pretty good.

I will say out the gate that this seems a bit tamer than the book. Billy's drug addiction was kind of harrowing and a big part of the book at least for a decent portion of it, but the writers didn't delve all that deep in to it here, and I'm assuming he'll be sober and out of rehab in the next episode. They do have a whole 10 episodes in this show, so I'm just kind of confused why this wasn't explored a bit more? Maybe it doesn't have to be all that harrowing to watch, I just thought addition was captured a bit better in shows and movies like Euphoria and Trainspotting.

I also don't love some of the editing choices here. Why didn't we get to see The Six's performance to Teddy? This is a show about a band after all.

But for my criticisms and gripes, I've also found some things I quite like. I think Teddy constantly trying to get Daisy to work with him in the studio is great, and the two actors alongside each other in these scenes are quite good.

I also like that Camilla is pretty much the honorary sixth member of the band. Pete was an okay addition to the book, but he's such a minimal part of it in the grand scheme of things and I'm not too surprised that he was just cut out of the show going forward.

And what music and performances we do see are quite good. Hearing the music wasn't something I got to do for the novel, so hearing it come to life has so far been fun, and the production and musical performances are genuinely great.

And again, the acting and cinematography is very good!

This isn't 100% what I expected from the show so far, but it is fairly actuate to the book honestly. The few changes made haven't at all effected the story or how it will likely tie up. I'm not addicted to this series, but I am pretty excited to watch more.

A Tale of Friendship and Resilience
badeclerck20 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The second episode of Daisy Jones and the Six is once again a solid installment, maintaining a dynamic pace despite its themes. It delves deeper into the characters, revealing their nuances, personalities, and psyches. The group continues to expand, nearing the formation of "The Six," while Daisy follows her own path with a certain arrogance, believing she can control her own destiny.

One of the strengths of this episode is the wonderful friendship between Daisy and Simone. Their mutual support and presence for each other are touching and add an extra layer to the story. This genuine friendship brings a welcome warmth to the narrative.

Camila, on the other hand, is particularly moving in this episode. Her quick marriage to Billy followed by a rapid pregnancy puts her in a difficult situation. She finds herself abandoned by the man she loves, who is spiraling into alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity. Nevertheless, Camila remains strong with her baby in her arms, which is both beautiful and heartbreaking. This storyline admirably reflects the mores of the time and the challenges women faced.

The second episode of Daisy Jones and the Six continues to captivate with its strong plot and well-developed characters. The relationship between Daisy and Simone adds a touch of human warmth, while Camila's journey evokes empathy from the audience. It's hard not to be eager to see how the story will unfold in the episodes to come. This series promises more emotional depth and compelling storytelling ahead.

Already going downhill

I am European and I did not read the novel on which this series is based. In fact, I had not even heard about it, but I had a very strong feeling it was written by a woman. After having watched two episodes i checked and found out the obvious: this is pure chick-lit with a thin coating of rebellious 70s.

Based on what I know about bands of the 70s, none of this makes sense except seen through the eyes of a contemporary young woman patronising her audience.

Billy's band is made of 5 people, the wifey is not the sixth member, but they accept Karen suggestion as perfectly obvious... sure, in your dreams. There are almost more scenes of Camila taking pictures than of the band members... again female point of view.

Singers like Robert Plant and Mick Jagger juggled drugs, groupies, wives and children without all the drama, because at the time it was "normal" to live the dissolute lives with little insight. I mean, Jimmy Page slept with a 13 y.o. Groupie, that's a fact.

As far as Daisy herself, she's is presented as an incomparable genius (from a teenager point of view), but she comes across as entitled and arrogant. How many times I saw the story of "I was a waitress but an agent spotted me and I became a model/actress/rock star without even trying, because I am a natural and I did not change my style a bit, because I'm always right".

And the music is not even that good...
