Mars McCracken, writer and director of "Stanley Stanton" provided the following information via the public Stanley Stanton Facebook page. "On June 23, 2001, someone I had been fond of when I was a child, passed away. When I went to bed that night I started to think of him. We hadn't had much contact through the years so I wasn't privy to the specifics of his life. I knew a little about his parents, that he was from the south, a religious man, and had been a soldier in WWII and the Korean War. As I lay there, suddenly I could see him perfectly, standing in front of a large gate. Then this strange story began to visually unravel, with this man "Stanley" as the lead character. I was still awake at sunrise when it finally resolved. To say the least, I was surprised at what I had imagined (?). I first attempted to write a book about it (which is on my to do list to finish) then years later decided to make a movie. I used much of the original concept (dream/vision ?) and filled it in with fictional details to help the story progress. Because I had a limited budget, I could not include every aspect of the story or reproduce the physical settings I had envisioned, but I pushed forward regardless. I have not heard anything from "Stanley" since that night, although numerous odd occurrences did take place during the filming, which made me wonder if he was hovering. From beginning to end, "Stanley Stanton" has been a surreal experience and one of the most monumental tasks I have ever taken on. "
