In addition to having a subplot, the episode's main theme was actively responding to news results of the 2020 New Hampshire Democratic primary. Writers were on standby, just off set, rewriting dialogue as results came in. These were brought to the cast during commercial breaks, with no rehearsal.
Planning, pre-production and rehearsal took a full seven days, when episodes normally only need two or three. The last two days were spent doing repeated run-throughs to ensure the timing was correct (for commercial breaks, etc.)
A traditional taping utilizes three to four cameras, but this episode used a total of 14, including a jib which was used to show the studio audience at the end.
Two live tapings were done, three hours apart, to accommodate all time zones in truly having the Live experience, instead of a delayed airing of just one performance.
Seconds before the west coast taping was set to begin (8 p.m. PST), production was abruptly stalled for two minutes; ABC News had taken over the live feed, giving updates about the primary.
