The first trailer has been unveiled for “Walls” (“Mur”), actor-turned-filmmaker Kasia Smutniak’s directorial debut that will world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to a mass exodus of refugees seeking asylum across Europe. Among the European countries offering aid and refuge, Poland was particularly generous but the country had also simultaneously commenced the construction of Europe’s most expensive wall along its entire border with Belarus to deter further refugees from entering.
A strip of land known as the red zone running parallel to the Belarusian border prevents anyone from approaching and seeing the construction of the wall. Smutniak undertakes an uncertain and risky journey into the red zone, where access is not allowed to the media, with the help of local activists and minimal technical equipment. The director’s journey begins and ends with two walls.
The first wall rejects migrants arriving...

A version of this story about Caleb Deschanel appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
For the first 38 years of the Academy Awards, foreign-language films were ignored in the Best Cinematography category. But in recent years, foreign fare has averaged almost one nomination a year — and this year three of the five nominations are for films not in English, tying the record set in 2004 when “House of Flying Daggers,” “The Passion of the Christ” and “A Very Long Engagement” were all nominated.
Interestingly enough, Caleb Deschanel was involved both of those years: He shot Mel Gibson’s 2004 nominee “The Passion of the Christ,” which was in Aramaic and Latin, and also is in the running this year for Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s German-language drama “Never Look Away.”
“The difference is that nobody on the set of ‘The Passion’ understood Aramaic and Latin,” Deschanel said with a laugh.

Fox’s “Rent” got evicted in ratings on Sunday — at least when comparing the semi-live TV musical to all the ones that came before it. And yes, that includes another poor performer, Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live.”
Due to a cast member’s injury, last night’s “Rent” used mostly pre-taped footage from a dress rehearsal. The show’s effort received a 1.4 rating among adults 18 to 49 and 3.415 million total viewers, per Nielsen’s fast national numbers.
Compare that with December 2017’s “A Christmas Story Live,” which drew a 1.5 rating and 4.48 million viewers. That one, which went up against “Sunday Night Football” on NBC, had been the previous low for these live-tv musicals.

In a genial presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday that reassured the massed ranks of exhibitors that it believes in the theatrical business, Hollywood’s newest major player also broke news about theatrical distribution partners on two films on its slate.
Lionsgate will work with head of marketing and distribution Bob Berney on the Us theatrical release of Cannes opener Café Society (pictured), while IFC Films was revealed as the partner on Sundance acquisition Complete Unknown.
If the legend ‘We Love Theaters’ emblazoned across two giant screens in the Octavius Ballroom and the presence of Berney were not already enough to persuade theatre owners that Amazon Studios intends to mount proper theatrical campaigns 90 days before the films roll out on its digital platform, the executive made it very clear in the session.

With Russell Crowe playing Noah, Paul Verhoeven bringing us Jesus and Warner Bros tackling Moses, the movies are well and truly back in the good book
The good book is back in showbiz. Darren Aronofsky has a bearded Russell Crowe for Noah. The documentary Bible Quiz is in post-production. Will Smith's directorial debut will be Cain and Abel (reportedly with a vampire twist). Paul Verhoeven's Jesus of Nazareth has its finance in place. Justin Theroux is rewriting Swear to God – a comedy about a hedge-fund manager who has seen the Almighty. Ridley Scott, Warner Bros – with a rumour of Spielberg directing – and the Chernin Entertainment Company all have Moses movies. Mary Mother of Christ, a film about the life of Jesus up to age 12, is currently prepping, as is Langston Hughes's Black Nativity, with a cast of Samuel L Jackson, Angela Bassett and Jennifer Hudson. And earlier this week,...

London -- Relations between Britain's two government-owned broadcasters, the BBC and Channel Four, just got a lot testier.
The tiff escalated Tuesday night after a news report on Four's flagship newscast accused the BBC of wasting public money on program launches.
The report said the BBC had spent 45,000 pounds ($70,000) launching the show "Merlin" to press and buyers at a top London venue and had spent 118,000 pounds ($183,000) launching three other shows: "Little Dorrit," "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" and "The Passion" this year.
Four's news arm requested the figures under the Freedom of Information act, which allows info to be sought from public organizations.
BBC insiders have reacted with outrage at the report, which they say is "par for the course" and "something you have to do" when it comes to promoting major drama.
"We do it, ITV do it, Channel 4 do it," a senior BBC source said. "When you are...
