Could've been so much better than this
mademoisherl4 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps the burden of being the foundation for a cinematic universe is the drive that makes "Sri Asih" scattered, unfocused, and rushed near the end. Although lacking several reasoning, the build-up for Alana's arc is promising, until the focus totally shifted toward the villain and explanatory sequence for the BCU. This automatically puts the main protagonist on the bench, by rushing her superhero transformation into a mere tool to advance the villain's reveal.

While the marketed synopsis described Alana as someone who struggles with her identity and inner storm, it's baffling to see that there is no single scene that depicts how she copes with it. She never mentioned her parent or any curiosity thereof, she doesn't work on her anger issues, she's not questioning whether the strangers that bring a sudden life-changing turn in her life are actually legit, she even miraculously mastered her newfound "power" just because the villain is in front of her.

What's more painful is the half-baked script, that drastically downgrades everyone's performance. Every single character, except Ario Bayu & Reza Rahardian, sounds awkward and doesn't fit in. You know it's disastrous when the ever-marvelous Christine Hakim is helplessly boring when delivering her lines. Many parts sound too explanatory and unnatural, not to mention the inconsistency of the language style that makes some lines seem out of the blue.

For a postponed project, I was expecting the crew to dive deeper into the research in shaping the whole art direction for this film. As it turns out, the wardrobe looks out of place, the color palette is pretty much an eyesore, the scoring doesn't help the ambiance, and the heritage touch felt forced.

Hats off to Pevita Pearce for putting so much effort into shaping herself into Sri Asih, to Upi Avianto for putting her foot to making a foundation film for BCU, and to the visual effect team for putting the extra mile in making the CGI aspect of this film slightly elevated than average Indonesian films, but for me personally, it could've been so much better than this.

Wonder Woman Wanna Be
sansanxaverius-7688621 November 2022
First of all, this movie is good. Better execution than Gatotkaca. What makes it better? They dont rush it. The CGI is great. Pevita Pearce is nailing it, and she is in very great shape.

But, the soundtrack and fighting coreography and cinematography, and facial expression of Sri Asih remind me of Wonder Woman, every aspect of it. It is too bad that the filmmaker trying so hard ro be like DCU Wonder Woman, when actually they can provide something better than Wonder Woman with these great casts and CGI team behind this movie. But overall it is a good movie, the storyline is simple, the simple humor is good, overall it is a solid movie. Pevita Pearce is awesome.

An Improvement, But Still Isn't Good
geraldkweesar31 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
At first, I had a big expectation for this movie upon watching the second trailer since the previous and first installment in the BCU, Gundala was pretty disappointing in a lot of aspects and it seems they only learned a little for making this film.

Okay, sure this time they put in more action scenes, more & better VFX. But UNFORTUNATELY the fights scenes are REALLY painful to watch, especially the fight between Alana and Roh Setan's henchmen.

Every punch they throw in this film looks slow, choreographed, and almost has no impact. A lot of the bad guy's henchmen brought guns, but either they never used a firearms before or they just forgot to load any bullets to it since probably there are only 5% of shots in this film actually hits the target, such a garbage directing.

Now the VFX, I would say most VFX in this films were just an "okay", not bad but not good either, just in between. The VFX only looks good for Roh Setan when he turns to his smoke form.

For the casting... I feel like Bumilangit only wants to recruit big actors & actress to their films not for their skills in acting or even actions scenes, but solely for their big names in the media thinking people would watch their films because they have all these big names lineup.

Insufficient Character Build Up
fvhimawan27 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Being angry" many times was not characterized (built up) enough in her role, nor does being overwhelmed by her annoying nightmare. Even as a hard headed teenager also cannot be built enough. I thought at first it was because of the storyline, but when it comes to mind to compare with Gun#al@ then I see that this is also about how the star plays the role and directing as well.

Back to comparing this with Gun#al@, I may say that I enjoyed everything in Gun#al@ better, but the same feeling I got (even worse) when I watched Captain Marvel, so I guess not just in Bumi Langit Universe but also in the Marvel Universe nothing is perfect, nothing will give audience consistent review, that's why I need to watch more and more from both universe... LOL.

Just bring out GOD@AM as soon as possible, can't wait to watched it.

JUST STAY... IT GETS BETTER!!
devinaanita22 November 2022
Worth the hype,.. slowly burned on the first act but the character development feels a bit rushed. The writters seems to under develop the script because sometimes the jokes didn't hit and few action scenes had me rolled my eyes, Reza Rahadian prove to us he could do any genre of movies, CGI looks a bit weird at first but decent choreography though, I think the first bumilangit movie was better because it didn't add CGI into every action sequence it had, and also why does she have to always taunting amd smiling even in the middle of a fight? But like I said, just stay... It gets better on the final act.

Dragging... dragging... dragging...
aji_gps18 April 2023
Dragging... dragging... dragging... great fight sequence... then dragging again... that's what it feels like watching Sri Asih. If you only depend on your super hero fight sequence, you can just be a syrup commercial, because we have those type of commercials here.

I'll point out its flaws as many as I can in this review. First, inconsistent and unlikeable characters. Pevita pearce is sometimes patriotic, but in other scenes, she's like a slacking of character. Her fashion isn't believable either, and it doesn't help make people root for her.

The directing of the opening scene is woeful, was it on autopilot? Also they can make the movie more entertaining by mixing up the plot a little bit, going back and forward. Adding up a little humor wouldn't be hurtful either.

Stealing a bit from wonder woman? I agree. But again, the fight scenes aren't the main problem here.

Plot holes, or can I name them plot holes? It's more like a massive giant hole, were there even a plot to begin with? It's like "where did this character come from?", "where did that character go?", "what is the purpose of this character?", "why is the antagonist doing this?"

I always questioned the decision of making this cinematic universe because I've even seen the best studios crash and burn in attempting to build one of their own. Well if it does succeed... Give a million thanks to the ignorant viewers who support it.

Not good, but not that bad either
magnussonborski20 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what kind of weed people who give 10 score smoke. They are so bias as hell, I wonder if they are just hardcore fans of Pevita Pearce.

Negative
  • Numb dialogues. The script for dialogue is poorly written. It is like literally the just repeat everything what is written in the script, without adding some nuances to it.

  • The tempo is too fast, and that leads to poor character development. Suddenly we have an easily-angered-girl Alana, or Kala coming out of nowhere.

  • The story line is very easy to be guessed. You can sniff that out who is the main antagonist by first one third part of the movie.

  • The jokes in this movie are so corny.

Positive + Act of Reza Rahadian and Surya Saputra save this movie from its undoing. Their act is just amazing.

+ Some CGI effects are crazily well done. Especially the power transfer from Asih to Alana and the CGI effects on the main antagonist with smokey stuffs. And also I love the details when our hero fights the main antagonist, you can feel that they are the two most powerful characters at the moment.

Overall, it is an okay movie so you can't expect too much from this movie. I hope Godam movie will be much better than this one.

best superhero movie in southeast asia
monibhebhe17 November 2022
This is the best Indonesian superhero so far, maybe even the best in Southeast Asia. I really like the visual effect, which is almost on par with Hollywood. The acting of the players is very good and very good. The characters here are very memorable with good dialogue and nothing disappoints. The origin of sri asih is very well told, the character development is also clear, the battle choreo is epic and I think they learned from the mistakes in the Gundala film, oh yes, the Indonesian element is also very strong here, I just watched it in theaters and I want to applaud because I didn't expect an Indonesian film to be it can be this good, I'm surprised there are still people who are julid with this film.

I AM PROUD TO BE INDONESIAN
rahimnoryan6 December 2023
CGI in this movie has getting better, smooth, and quite enough to be called as superhero movies. I believe the budget is not the same as Marvel, but I am proud to see this movie. I felt like to have my country making this movie is a miracle to me.

Unfortunately, writing still need to be improved, some character are missing in the movie without having any explanations. The connection between the main and the support characters are too flat.

Some action has better cinematography, but sometimes the scenes are not logcal to me. Hoping, BumiLangit Cinematic universe will continue to improve any aspects for the next projects.

Very disappointing
vincentrcrd20 November 2022
Bad CGI, cinematography, acting, writing. The movie does not introduce any character very well.

At the first 5 mins of the movie, they tried to capture your attention with bad and useless CGI without giving you any context.

Many ugly frame rates on the fighting scene and the motion blur is just so irritating. The VFX compisition is disappointing in almost all fighting scenes. The muzzle flares look so cheap.

Some characters were introduced in very ugly way. They just did it in Photoshop with that budget I think.

The ending is also very inauthentic and you should've known they copied it from one of the most popular scene from a US super hero movie.

They also tried so hard to match it with the story of Gundala to make it fit in with BLU.

I can not believe they spent 20 billion for this. I should've stayed at home than spending my time for this.

Strong world building, action packed, WW with The Raid moves
rofiffaiz17 November 2022
This movie is bumilangit's second project after Gundala (2019) and, What an Upgrade!! In every aspects!!

The movie has kind of story you can expect from superhero movie. The plot is not super original, it could have been better, but its tidy and straight forward. The story and the world building is the aspect that stands out for me, it explained where this universe is going, and this world building makes the main plot of the first phase of Bumilangit Cinematic Universe is something you will never find in Hollywood movies. It is very original based on their comics, characters, and Indonesian myths.

The Action is everywhere and well choreographed, and it is one of the strengths of this movie, shout-out to Uwais Team as the fight coreograph consultant, just imagine wonder women with "The Raid" moves, but it's not WW, it is Sri Asih, she is a hero for a reason, the cast.s and the stunts know what they're doing. The camera work during the action scene is very clear and stylish, The scoring is really good, it emphasizes and enhances the sequences. Solid scoring i can say.

And last is The visual fx,. It might something you considered so much in watching a superhero movie, but for a movie that only has a budget of about 1% of Black Panther (2018), you won't be disappointed!. It's far away better from the first movie Gundala (2019), and it's not just used for the character's power but for the world building also.

So, it is 8/10 for me Thank you.

Dewi Asih
cahidi2 October 2023
I think this is the best Indonesian superhero movie, so far. It definitely surpasses Gundala, and obviously leaving Gatotkaca way behind. I can't wait to see the collaboration of Sri Asih and Gundala. The fighting sequences are decent, the plot is solid and although the twist were pretty straight forward, but it's still good enough. I feel like they can still improve on the super fighting sequences though. I saw some inconsistencies. Sometimes she's mighty strong and super amazing, but sometimes she's kinda ordinary. I mean, if she has super speed, why not use it every time she's surrounded by a bunch of enemies? I mean, that's what I would've done. Why bother using her red shawl? Even though it's really cool, but it's not efficient and time consuming.

It could've been better...
jamz-ferdy20 December 2023
Sri Asih is the second entry in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (BCU) after Gundala back in 2019.

Where do I start?

When it was announced that Indonesia's superheroes would have their own cinematic universe, I was excited because now there's a chance to introduce our local superheroes to the world. Especially Gundala, which I remember once reading its comic when I was in elementary school and watching the movie in the 80s.

Then Gundala, the 2019 movie, was released, and I felt disappointed after watching it. That movie was trying too hard to be dark and gritty, with a storyline that was too hard to follow and clunky CGI. Not to mention, it introduced so many characters that, unfortunately, I can't even remember them now. Sri Asih suffers the same fate as Gundala, trying to be dark and gritty but failing to tell a compelling story. One hour was spent setting up the background story that felt so boring that I found myself playing games on my phone. The second half was where the superhero thing began, and I quite liked it. The fighting scenes looked clearly choreographed with some cool special effects, but I'm okay with it. For some reason, I felt like watching a Wonder Woman movie because the fighting style was almost identical, especially when Sri Asih used her bangles to counter the bullets. The CGI was cool and almost perfect, with the exception of one scene around 1 hour and 27 minutes that looked fake. The acting was okay; no one stood out, but the actress who played Gisel is really terrible; her overacting was really painful to watch. Also, the way the Fire Goddess spoke wasn't intimidating but annoying instead.

Overall, I think there's a lot that needs to be improved in the way BCU produces its future movies. I haven't watched the third movie of BCU, which was Virgo & The Sparklings, or the recently released companion series Tira, so I can't judge whether the same problem repeats itself or if there's any improvement.

A step forward from Southeast Asian cinema
lukyferris26 March 2023
In the world of Indonesian and Southeast Asian cinema, Sri Asih surprisingly provides superhero avatars and tales which are extremely compelling.

Upi, as a director, achieved success in giving her greatest performance in directing films with animation and visual effects, which are quite challenging to do in the Indonesian cinema industry nature, that is limited; yet, with all the lack of visual, Indonesian cinema still is brave to advance so as to learn and develop in alongside Hollywood.

Sri Asih entry into the world of superhero genre films in Indonesia and possibly Southeast Asia is a very encouraging sign that the Indonesian film industry can grow.

What a lovely wonder woman movie.

Indonesian comic books
BandSAboutMovies9 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Sri Asih was created in 1953 by RA Kosasih, who is considered the father of Indonesian comic books. According to the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe Wiki, this is her origin: "Nani Wijaya, is the daughter of a wealthy family, is a bead of Goddess Sri from the Kahyangan Kingdom. As an adult, Nani works as an agent of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to defend truth & justice. However, when he struggles, Nani can transform herself into Sri Asih by translating "Goddess Asih!"" This allows her to access her powers as the reincarnation of Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice and fertility who is still worshiped on the islands of Java, Bali and Lombok.

Her powers include strength, speed, durability, flight, duplication, a healing factory and the ability to grow in size. As a BCI agent, she already had martial arts abilities and detective skills, which add to her superhuman powers.

Sri Asih was such a popular character that she had her first movie made a year after she debut. Sri Asih was directed by Tan Sing Hwat and Turino Djunaedy. The first superhero movie made in Indonesia, it is sadly lost.

This version of Sri Asih is the second installment of the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, a series of superhero films based on more than 500 comic book characters in the library of Indonesian publishing company Bumilangit which started with 2019's Gundala.

Directed by Upi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gundala director Joko Anwar, this tells the story of the third Sri Asih, who at the start of the movie is Alana (Pevita Pearce). For her entire life, she's been a fighter and had to hold back the rage inside her. That makes sense, as she was nearly killed by the volcano that made her an orphan when she was just an infant.

After being raised by a female martial artist, she becomes an MMA fighter in her adulthood, which brings her into the cage against the privileged Mateo (Randy Pangalila). By the end, she will have to battle one of the top five villains of the BCU - the five commanders of the Goddess of Fire - known as Evil Spirit.

I may not know these characters at all, but I think it's awesome that other cultures are attempting to leverage their own comic book mythologies - that's why I hate that people talk down on comic book movies, because they are no different than the myths of any culture throughout time - and translate them to the screen and give themselves representation.

This might not have the budget of a Marvel movie, but somehow, the fights look better and the CGI looks just as good. At the end of this movie, there's even a post-credits cameo. Much like how Sri Asih showed out at the end of Gundala, Mandala appears briefly.

For those of us in the U. S., Shout! Factory has the rights to this and will release it this year. Check it out when you can, because it's such a cool opportunity to learn of the heroes of other places and see them in action.

Bad Music Theme
lihatjalanan14 December 2023
"Pevita plays quite well here. Even though the storyline is ordinary, the plot is not too slow but also not too fast. The visual effects and CGI in some parts are good, but not for all, and it still looks stiff. The musical theme is really not good. It doesn't represent Sri Asih. I was really annoyed when I watched it in the cinema. It seemed like it wanted to imitate the theme from Wonder Woman without Tina Guo on the cello, so the whole thing failed miserably. Mixing is also uneven in some parts and feels like it doesn't blend." But I'm support to make more Indonesian super heroes in the future, may this critics lead to good way for the team.

impressive.
haitsamrafid20 November 2022
This movie makes me love bumilangit universe even more.

It is not a masterpiece. But it is a great movie and very enjoyable. There are still a lot of problems with this movie. But I'm just gonna say the most significant problems.

It felt rushed. The tempo is too fast. And quite jumpy. And the sound effect... they need to improve in that a lot more... other than that it's still acceptable to me...

now let's talk about the good things THE CGI!... its amazing... from gundala to this... it's a huge jump. 1 of the best CGI Indonesia has ever had.

I can't say the fight scene is great... it's ok? It looks so much smoother and well-choreographed. But gundala felt more power on those punches. IMO.

The way they shoot this movie is just fantastic, the camera work is great too. I wouldn't say I like the color tone. But I can accept it. Since almost every Indonesia movie looks like that

And of course. Reza rahardian acting here is fantastic. All of them are great. But sometimes it looks stiff... I like how jefri Nichol character here is very very religious... it's funny, great acting from Nichol.

And Mrs pevita. You are awesome here... I can't imagine any other celebrity as Sri asih. Great job.

I like how they manage to make everything connected. From gundala to Sri asih... they do it very well... yeah, overall it's a great movie. Recommended to watch it.

Fighting scene & the CGI are beyond expectation
aliffiandika21 November 2022
The fighting choreography is incredible, it gave us "the Raid" kinda vibes tho it is not R-rated movie, the CGI is great, some scenes are as good as MCU/DCEU movies, but Alana's character development needs more depth, maybe we will see it in the next bumi langit movie or Sri Asih 2.

The Indonesian traditional culture (specifically Javanese) is extremely rich in this movie but somehow still feels like typical modern superheroes stories.

The humor isn't cringe, the dialogues feels natural eventho it's mixed of Indonesian standard language and jakartan's dialect. The Javanese accents spoken by the actors also sounds natural.

Improvements from Gundala! But...
seniorscratchy20 November 2022
Sri Asih is Bumilangit Cinematic Universe's (BCU) second movie after Gundala (2019). It gives a good impression after watching it.

There are many aspects of Gundala that Sri Asih fix. The pacing is consistent, unlike Gundala, which has a good start in the first half but is rushed at the end. The fight and action scenes are also much better when compared to Gundala, with more "hard" fights.

The most noticeable thing, of course, is the use of CGI. The use of CGI in Sri Asih is more majestic and neat. By this, CGI quality in Sri Asih is the best in Indonesia for now. But, of course, it is still inferior to some Hollywood movies.

Pevita Pearce's effort in preparing to play Alana/Sri Asih is extraordinary. Her performance reflects the physical strength training she has been undergoing. Reza Rahadian and Surya Saputra manage to bring out their respective characters well.

But the character that caught my attention was Jagau (played by Revaldo). As Prayogo's right hand, he has the potential to be a more important character in the future. I will look forward to future stories from this character.

The world-building is also done quite well and gives viewers an understanding of what it's like to be in the BCU. Viewers can feel Sri Asih is part of a much larger and interconnected world. The exposition is done with the right portion, so it doesn't make you bored or sleepy.

The unfortunate thing is the lack of time for the viewers to know Alana more closely before she goes through the "hero" phase in her life. Gundala gives the audience time to get to know who's Sancaka and how his life was before becoming Gundala. One of the effects is that the emotional closeness between Alana and her mother has not developed well enough.

Pevita's acting is quite good, but my concern is when Pevita is acting sad. It's like something is missing from her expression. The sadness feels too bland.

From the cinematography aspect, some shots make the atmosphere feel more cramped. But Sri Asih also has good cinematography, one of which is Alana's fight scene with Mateo.

As usual, Joko Anwar's produced movies always have social commentary. But Sri Asih didn't deliver it very well. It feels not smooth.

There are also two sarcastic dialogues from Sri Asih that don't seem to fit the circumstances. Tangguh also has not contributed enough to the development of the plot.

One more thing that I love about Sri Asih is the audio. Often, Indonesian movie audio dubbing is not aligning with the visual. In Sri Asih, it not happen.

Sri Asih is a superhero movie that is fun and well-presented. Sri Asih has succeeded in making the new standard of superhero films in Indonesia. But it doesn't mean it's perfect. There are still a lot of problems that Joko Anwar and the BCU team need to fix in future movies. One of which is a more focused and grounded origin story.

Good job, Sri Asih, the best Indonesian superhero movie to date!

Score: 7.5/10

P. S.:
  • My score for Gundala was 7/10
  • Lots of easter eggs and one mid-credit scene, so don't miss it!

  • The final battle scene is my favorite!

This was far better than gundala
sanjaime-1008919 November 2022
Good movie overall, just really disappointed with the short ending and felt so anticlimactic. Many things left unexplained and that's annoying for something that's been greatly built up.

VFX was unexpected tbh. It was far far better than the gundala one. You'll understand once you saw the movie.

Now about the casting. I really really expect better casting than they did on this movie, NGL almost all of them are low tier actors lol. This probably happened because they put more money on the vfx. If we compare the casting to gundala, I'd prefer gundala more.

Here's the only good actors IMO in the movie: Pevita Pearce, reza rahardian, dimas anggara, surya saputra, the one played mateo, the one played the blind old woman, Surya saputra's crook leader.

And the rest was mediocre or even worse.

Well-made, action-packed, Indonesian film.
nick98nicholas22 November 2022
One of the better produced Indonesian movies. CGI effects were pretty well implemented, although some scenes had it better than others. Action sequences were well choreographed, with some sequences being competitive with other major Indonesian action movies (e.g. The Raid). The storyline was pretty good with even some of the plot twits are sure to have watchers taken aback. However, the pacing could be improved as it was pretty hard to follow at times, jumping from point to point. Nevertheless, it was clear the actors and producers put a lot of effort to making this a successful Indonesian movie, and the final film shows that.

IMPROVED 100%!!!
niarlove18 November 2022
I really amaze with the movie, since the fighting, CGI effect, and story telling so impressive.

There are some missing for the detail, for instance, Alana friend's (Gilang and Eastern Boy) was gone after hospital scene and the timeline detail for Alana born and facing of Doctor Satan.

90% of CGI was smooth and good! A bit glitch at last fight scene.

The expression for all characters was memorable, eventhough there are some act looks stiff but that still fine.

For Indonesian movie, this is the new standard for others movie, especially action and hero movie, director and producer should be used this as reference and can make a movie greater than this!

Good job for Mrs. Upi as director and Pevita as Sri asih! Thanks for the effort to all crew.

Love this movie!

Overall, it is highly recommended for you who loves Sci-fi, Indonesian folklore and action genre!

Sri Asih ^_^
bayunugrohomail20 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You know Sri Asih is the Indonesian version of Wonder Woman. With a modest budget "Marvel catering class" (Joko Anwar said) the BCU comics universe has dared to make their second Marvel after Gundala. You can even hear the backsound similar to the wonder woman fight scene.

Does this look like WW plagiarism? Then why did I give 10 stars? Doesn't this make your expectations shattered after watching it :/ ???

Well... no!

Marvel and DC are of course backing this new BCU universe. BCU gives a different feel to both Marvel and DC. Because the 2 Gundala and Sri Asih films are more towards horror and mystical, more different than Moon Knight, which clearly shows his god, but this film is not explained in detail, only given a flash of a scene (this makes plot holes and makes me excited to theorize with the fandom) .

Back again in Sri Asih...

Is this good and worth it to watch? If you want to see the Indonesian version of Advenger, of course you have to watch :V

Story : 9/10 Acting: 8/10 Fights : 7/10

Nani Wijaya : 100000000/10 (Karena pemerannya adalah reporter superhero wanita asli yang berani melawan pemerintah korupsi di dunia nyata tepatnya dinegara Indonesia itu sendiri, yang mana film ini dimaksudkan.)

A must watch film
gittagittab22 November 2022
In my opinion, the best Indonesian's superhero movie so far.

Being the second Bumilangit Cinematic Universe film that came out, Sri Asih has exceeded my expectations. As is typical for modern superhero films in general, which combine drama and action, 'Sri Asih' combines these two elements in a balanced way.

Talking about the action scenes in Sri Asih, you will be spoiled with many stunning action scenes, even with the CGI effects (thumbs up for the CGI!).

Aside from its incredible CGI and storyline, Sri Asih also serves you with amazing line-up of casts like Surya Saputra, Reza Rahadian, Ario Bayu, Christine Hakim, Dimas Anggara, Jefri Nichol, and many more.

I will definitely watch the movie again!

VERY RECOMMENDED!!!👌🏽
friscalvionit22 November 2022
The whole story is really interesting because there are unexpected scenes that you have to watch. Also, this local Indonesian super hero movie contains many action scenes and fighting scenes that seems incredible with great and high quality of CGI's.

Even though we need to wait because the movie air time was postponed, but it's all worth it to wait. This movie really introduced Indonesia's culture like the instrumental and language. All of this has wrapped in 135 duration of movies and its really entertaining.

I really like this movie, the whole story, characters, all the scenes and I'll definitely watch it again!
