Much more Disney than Marvel
wms-9274118 July 2022
Ms. Marvel has the look and feel of a Disney Channel program. That's not to say it is bad, simply quite different from the MCU miniseries we have seen before. It is clearly lower budget and appears to be targeted at a younger demographic. The best thing about it is that it shows Muslims in a positive light, celebrating Pakistani culture and history, although the depiction of the partitioning of India and Pakistan was very heavy-handed while leaving out much of the horror.

This is easily the least of the MCU series and most viewers would be just fine skipping it.

Symptom of a directionless MCU
iagolivesforever14 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I don't think this show is all bad. The characters are charming and likeable, and there are good bits of humor sprinkled throughout. There are also several moments of earnest and sincere emotion that I found refreshing in an MCU product (especially after watching Thor: Love and Thunder). The showrunners clearly cared a lot about the characters and their culture/history.

The problem, however, is in the writing. The plot is an absolute mess. In the finale, for example, characters who've had zero importance to the plot just randomly show up out of nowhere to help Kamala. In the rest of the show, one character suddenly gets superpowers, there's time travel, a secret society of ninjas (basically), the main villain's arc is resolved in the penultimate episode, the list goes on. (Not to mention, the show at one point turns into a straight-up historical drama.) It's all over the place and makes little to no sense.

What's worse is how the show tries to tie in other MCU properties. Apparently, Kamala's bangle is somehow tied to the Ten Rings, and in the final scene of the show, her friend Bruno tells her that she's able to use the bangle not because she's a djinn, but because she's a mutant. If that wasn't enough, in the mid-credits scene, Kamala transforms into Carol Danvers!

Honestly, all this is starting to give me a headache. One of the things I appreciated about Moon Knight was how little it was connected to the rest of the MCU. It felt like its own thing, and you didn't have to watch a whole bunch of other movies/TV shows for it to make sense.

To be fair, I thought the directing was pretty solid throughout the whole show, but it would've worked much better as a 2-hour film, as a lot of it felt like filler, like they were desperately trying to find ways to justify the 50-minute runtime for each episode. (It's also worth noting that the total amount of time Kamala spends using her powers is less than the length of one episode. She doesn't even officially become Ms. Marvel until the finale. I guess it's my fault for expecting more superhero action in a superhero show...)

Overall, as entertaining as the characters are, it's not enough to save this loud, colorful mess of a show. I don't know where the MCU is headed, but if this is any indication, I don't think the creators do either.

Not to bad
UniqueParticle19 October 2023
Been meaning to watch awhile figured I should with The Marvels coming up soon. The series is pretty good Kamala Khan is precious I like that the actress is new to acting she's great already with her expressions and heroic ways, I admire already! I enjoyed Ms. Marvel in Avengers in the video game even though that was very different. Others are accurate this was more targeted for younger audiences the series still deserves better. I'm not really a fan of foreigners at least it's smooth and marvel based which is amazing to me! I don't know why this has a 6.3 rating that's quite unfortunate despite any flaws it's great for what it is.

Yes, it's for a younger audience, BUT Iman (no prior acting experience) radiates cosmic charisma over Brie (Oscar winner)
Geekofriendly9 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, 12-year olds will enjoy "Ms. Marvel" the most! ... But I felt idiotic watching the first episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and won't bother with the rest, whereas here I know exactly what I'm in for and can easily let go to enjoy a coming-of-age adventure. Also, the show actualy provides a couple of movie-magic moments.

Yes, there is some cringe ... But there's also a lot of heart, both behind and in front of our screens.

Yes, the special effects in ALL (!) Marvel's TV shows are still less immersive than in their movies ... But the music score that blends industrial with ethnic and the inspired cinematography make up for it.

But here's the main kicker: Iman Vellani is instantly likeable. Her character Kamala Khan has the Tom Holland potential to get under my skin, whereas Brie Larson's Carol Danvers will probably remain the least likeable MCU character unless she does some serious damage control.

In this regard, Ms. Marvel is already a much-appreciated addition to the Marvels. But I suspect this show will be easily misunderstood by some MCU die-hards. Sorry lads, sometimes putting on big-boy pants means letting go of the expectation that everything Marvel creates is intended precisely for you.

Ms. Marvel: Delightful
Platypuschow25 April 2024
Plot

Kamala, a superhero fan with an imagination--particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel--feels like she doesn't fit in at school and sometimes even at home, that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she admires.

Cast

Unusually not familiar with anyone involved, however Iman Vellani is excellent which is further impressive when you remember this is her first role.

Verdict

I remember when word got out that Ms. Marvel was happening there was a lot of unpleasantness, I remember when the trailer dropped there was even more but this time for different reasons. I however went in with an open mind and experienced quite the surprise.

Vellani knocks it out of the park as the titular hero in what most consider a tamer more light hearted Marvel outing, but is it? Different Marvel characters, different tones, some lighter and some darker. So why emphasize the lighter tone here? Is it aimed at kids? No, no more than Guardians of the Galaxy or Antman! Not everything needs to be gritty, not everything needs to have dark undertones. If that's what you want, go watch the tatters that is the DC universe!

Her powers? That complaint is valid and frustrating. The MCU has taken liberties with characters before, look at the Mandarin, look at Taskmaster, and though it's into the X-Men extended universe look at the original outing of Deadpool in the Wolverine movie! Yikes! So yes this isn't the Ms. Marvel you're used to in the comics and that I don't like, but I got over it so you can as well.

Ms. Marvel is a silly, fun, wholesome and oddly endearing tale that left me wanting more but also appreciating it simply wasn't needed. This was an origin story, an introduction and nothing more.

Bravo, I enjoyed it.

Rants

It's poorly written they bark to disguise the real reasons, weird when you look at the similarities between all these allegedly poorly written movies and shows. It's almost as if it's not about the wring at all. All the things in the world to get upset about, to be passionate about, to spew vitriol about and this is what you choose? No wonder the world is such a tribalistic mess.

The Good

Iman Vellani A lot of fun Really charming

The Bad.

The changes to the character.

Yes, it's aimed at a younger audience
garry-anderton13 June 2022
But so what? With the amount of content we get from Marvel who cares if we get something squarely aimed at kids? I thought it was fresh and fun - and WAY more enjoyable than Moon Knight. It's sad that a bunch of man-babies have to resort to review bombing because "Disney bad"

A cute story about family, but being directed at kids doesn't mean the MCU needs to drop its quality standard.
frankiesilver-9183625 July 2022
I'm very mixed about this show. I went into it expecting to dislike it, I came out of the pilot optimistic, and by the end, I couldn't stand it.

It does start really great. I have to give the first 2 episodes props. A nice but Nickelodeon-feeling teen school-life sitcom that worked because of how likable Kamala and Bruno are and the cool Scott Pilgrim-esque style.

However, it quickly goes from being mostly inoffensive to the broader MCU to being a confusing mess. It tries to take itself seriously with a boring, confusing plot and awfully constructed villains. It feels like a low-budget CW show. The actions of Kamran, Najma, and the DODC make no sense. The dimensional travel and Noor stuff are so confusing that I don't understand why they wouldn't have just used her comic origin.

Characters like Waleed are there to exposition dump for a story that is so ridiculous, yet all the characters just accept what is going on and expect the audience to do the same.

Still, I must give credit where credit is due. Kamala and all her family and friends are really likable. The music is great, New Jersey feels so lively, and when it's not just a big cheap CGI fest the show is very stylistic.

There's a humble story about family and finding yourself here, but it's smothered beneath a hectic plot. There's too much going on. Kamala has 3 love interests within a 6 episode show and they all go nowhere. Bruno's story arc is set up and then he's sidelined for half the show. Nakia has a heavy presence at first, then does nothing. Whole plot lines feel overlooked or not fleshed out. It makes the show feel rushed.

And the kiddy nature of the show isn't an excuse for its quality. Kids already like the MCU at a quality level acceptable for all ages. It's especially not excusable when the show grounds itself in a universe that it actively contradicts the time travel logic of.

It just feels like they decided where Kamala was gonna end up first for her crossover with Captain Marvel and then backpedaled, making stuff up just to get from A to B. As a result, we get what I think is genuinely one of the worst main antagonists of a Marvel project ever among other issues.

Kamala's hero journey where, through her family, she discovers the superhero within her both literally and figuratively is the best part of the show. However, that actual journey is one that makes me really not want a Season 2.

Regardless, I still wish the best for this character going forward in the universe. She could bring some really-needed heart to The Marvels.

Thoroughly enjoyed something new!
jllz-4917711 February 2024
I actually watched this series after seeing The Marvels. I decided to binge all the Avengers series in order because I keep reading all sorts of negativity about how Disney wants to insert DEI into movies going forward and the online boy nerds on YouTube freaking out about "gasp!" females and people of colour being promoted. Personally I think Disney CEO is heavy handed and grooming which will lose what little audiences left. It's called entertainment, Bob!

That being said I really enjoyed this series! The cast did a great job! Lots of talent there! I find that the way life flows with its highs and lows very realistic and it makes you want to root for the characters and keep watching. Family home life interaction was good. The depiction of a vibrant religious Muslim life was a pleasant change from the negativity portrayed (I'm Christian myself) and loved the wedding! The depiction of Partition - a terrible mistake with tragic results - was powerfully portrayed! The graphics and colours was wonderful particularly the moving graffiti. A nice touch!

I'm really glad to have watched this series. When I watched the movie Ms Marvel first I told someone that it felt like a bunch of tv episodes stitched together and now I see why. The movie felt like something was being forced to be female entertainment written by males. That planet of singing, dancing aliens was uncomfortable to watch where the wedding in the series was more lively and fun and realistic!

I recommend you watch the series for some fun, some education, and some eye candy! It's well done and you will find yourself caring about the characters. Thats a hallmark of the Marvel world isn't it? Seeing the characters as people dealing.with life they never expected to have to and not always winning. Ignore all these social media fan-nerds boys whining and make your own mind up!

Give it a chance
tfoldi-2808817 August 2023
Sure it is not the best thing ever..but after Secret Invasion I wanted to watch something a bit more cheerful, and Ms Marvel definitely delivered.

Although the story is not so original, and I think it focuses a bit too much on history events, the main cast is very likeable, and Ms Marvel's persona is a joy to watch.

With Marvels coming out,I think if you are an mcu fan,you should watch this, when it came out I was not interested, figured it would not be for a 32 year old caucasian male, but it really put me in a good mood.

Next I will try to check out She Hulk, but I feel like I will really have to go in with a open mind to that one..

But the more I watch this series, the more I lose my love.

It's boring and focus on the wrong stuffs. I didn't get any excitement from any scene at all.

So... I gave it a chance but Not for me.

It's worth a watch if you're a Marvel fan
Rob133127 April 2024
Even though I thought Ms. Marvel is the 2nd worst of all the Marvel shows, only She-Hulk was. Worse. I still think it's worth watching. It's actually gotten great reviews and currently holds a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast is mostly made up of unknown actors and actresses, led by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. This is actually her first acting job ever and she does a pretty good job. She did such a good job that her next job is in the next Marvel blockbuster, The Marvels. I thought this show was only targeted for teens but I was wrong. While it is definitely aimed more for teens and children, that doesn't mean adults won't enjoy it. It's a fun show with plenty of heart.

plot could be better but thanks for making movies their cultures.
ThanyaJ1 January 2024
Kudos to Marvel that they're bold enough to make movie about Muslim - Indian - Pakistanis culture but the execution could be better. The culture parts were really interested and there's nothing about their culture that I don't like. Love they even present that girls have choice to wear Hijab or not and even gave a dog pet in Muslim's family but there are too less explanation, I guess some people would love to know why they could have a dog in family, why they could or could not wear hijab, the festival and food and what forbidden or allowed.

I love that there's a story that was told from their perspective, but the plot about coming age and the relationship between characters were executed badly. They have materials to make it intense but they chose to do young audience movie.

Clumsy direction, waste of time
trurohzes14 July 2022
This show promised much but became unbearable to watch. Direction is all over the place, it's probably intended for kids. Couldn't even finish the entire series, stopped halfway thru episode 4. Better read up on some comics or animated series about Ms Marvel if you intend on really getting to know the character.

Extremely disappointed.

A tween comedy based on a tween comic
maroispear8 June 2022
I don't know what people expected from this. The MCU might have a wide appeal, but it's still aimed at younger people. This is the universe focusing directly on a younger audience, with a character that is more relatable for a younger audience. And honestly it's enjoyable as that. Reminds me of a lot of the Disney shows I grew up with, just with the MCU references tied in closely. Does it seem like essential viewing for the wider universe? No. But it doesn't have to be. If you're not the audience that's okay, you don't have to be for it to still be good. I enjoyed it for what it is, I'm not in the audience it's aimed for but not everything has to cater to me. It's a solid teen, Disney comedy and that's exactly what it aims to be.

Really Bad
BadurBey7 July 2022
This show has stellar cinematography and a decent cast but is dragged down by the really bad plot and writing. I tried giving it a try and by the third episode I was out of it. Phase 4 of the MCU has been subpar in comparison to other phases of the franchise and has turned a well written, story driven, cinematic universe into a boring, repetitive, dull cameo driven pile of garbage.

The first episode was the best of the show with all the following episodes just being horrible.

Not the best from Marvel but still worth watching
Supermanfan-139 September 2023
Ms. Marvel tells the story of teenager Kamala Khan who is a fanatic for superheroes, especially her personal hero Captain Marvel. Kamala feels like an outsider in every aspect of her life, from school to even her own family. She then gets her own superpowers and starts to gain a lot of confidence and tries to follow in the footsteps of all the other great superheroes who she admires so much. I have to admit I didn't have high expectations going in but the series is engaging enough that it held my attention throughout the season. It only has six 45 minute episodes so it's an easy binge. If you're a Marvel fan then give this a try, especially because she's going to play a bigger part in the MCU...starting later this year in Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels.

Loved it! Even if 50+ old guy!
jonlars@online.no9 June 2022
After dreadful Obi-Wan Kenobi episodes and not a fan of any Avengers movie, I was not sure if I would even bother watching one episode of Ms. Marvel

Glad I did!

Alive and funny, warm and hilarious, it reminded me of "Into The Spider-verse", made with such an attention to details and love for the comics ... and genre!

My daughter at 11 feel asleep watching Obi-Wan (wish it was me), but she also enjoyed this, even if a bit younger than target audience! (Then again, I am some decades too old for the target audience so I guess it evens out!)

Hope the next 5 will have the same standard as this one!

From the MCU, to the M(CW).
FallenEye25 July 2022
Ms. Marvel is just another entry into what's going to be a long list of MCU content that we are not allowed to dislike, otherwise that means that there is something wrong with those who do - that we're somehow villainous, as Marvel and Disney continue to hide their various ideological priorities behind the guise of "story-telling", and not even all that well for those who can see past the transparent veil; pretentiously trying to fix every single culture, except their own.

In any case, Ms. Marvel is authentically boring, and inspires absolutely no excitement. This show is bland, and ironically, though very colorful, boasts an extreme sense of dullness. I know a "brown girl" being a superhero should be enough to have me doing cartwheels, similarly to why we are expected, bullishly so, to love CW's Supergirl and Batwoman, because I mean, why else would this show explicitly, with a chunky dose of cunning casualness, mention how Kamala is a brown girl right, but sadly, as it turns out (Sarcasm), there is a slight possibility that I prefer "Almond brown girls" (More Sarcasm). So get it right next time Marvel and Disney (Even More Sarcasm).

Ms. Marvel is another flat addition to the MCU's series installments, with mediocre action at best - actually, the action in this series is all the way uneventful and lifeless, a lackluster lead - though I have no problem with Iman Vellani, it's just that her portrayal of Ms. Marvel is as generic as they come, an uninteresting and uncompelling hero, plot twists that twist about as much as a block of wood and are just as intriguing, and, I don't know, I'm just trying to have aspects about this show to draw from, but it really didn't leave much, if any impression on me. Ms. Marvel, though it has no excitement, stakes, tension, or high level of engagement, and is to some extent, an arduous watch, is not bad I suppose (or maybe I genuinely feel like I'm not allowed to dislike this show), but it's not good either. It is simply representative representation represented in a representational representation.

5/10.

You have to give it a chance
glori14912 January 2024
Actually, before starting to watch this series, I read very bad reviews that it was very slow, very boring, one of the worst Marvel series, so I didn't have high expectations, however I liked the series and found it very entertaining, It is based on a comic of a teenage superheroine in the style of Spiderman, so we cannot forget that they cannot leave this part aside, however Kamala is a dreamy teenager who tries to see this stage in a different way, however there is no We must forget that we were all teenagers, Bruno was one of my favorite characters, I also think that it is good that Marvel shows us characters with different cultures and thus they tell us a little about the history of different cultures, which in my case I was unaware of and I investigated a little more , clearly it is not a history class to teach us how exactly the events happened. I am not going to deny that at the level of visual effects it does leave a lot to be desired, however like the latest Marvel series and movies. Really, like the Marvel series, they have many curiosities and many hidden themes that they cover in the comics. Therefore I think it is a series that you have to give a chance and make your opinion for yourself.

Really don't get the hate.
harrybakersfx8 June 2022
This isn't for Marvel fans who like a bit more adult humour etc, the reason I've rated it 7 because I'm 32 year old long term fanboy of the marvel movies etc and this is just not like anything Marvel have done yet which doesn't surprise me as they always pull out the unexpected. I enjoyed it but I do hope they give her powers from "that item" a back story, if not then the show would feel to random, can anyone become a supe? We're only one episode in but it has promise, the acting that seemed annoying in the trailer felt alot better and natural. This is more akin to watching a teen drama like teen wolf, vampire diaries but set in the MCU with vibranct colour and mission impossible plans. Overall its been made for a target audience which many shows try to please to many and fail, this is on target and even let's extended audiences feel welcome.

What's wrong with everyone?
zehracakici-1837714 June 2022
I'm so confused by all the reviews who score this show a 1/10.

Can I ask: is Marvel ALWAYS supposed to make shows for adults, or shows with darker themes? They're certainly not!

They can make whatever show they want for whatever audience they want. From the trailer it was clear that Miss. Marvel was meant for a younger audience or for those who are open for this genre.

So: if you don't like it, then don't watch it and give it 1 star because it's not meant for you! I'm a young adult and I very much liked this show so Marvel did a good job.

Unexpectedly Relatable.
XmasCookie27 October 2023
Who would've thought a Pakistani-American teenage girl is so damn relatable? She's basically Peter Parker with an added layer of outsiderness.

It shouldn't demographically speak to me since I'm the polar opposite of her character. But it stroked all my childhood love of Spiderman.

Plus, this actress is likable as hell.

The Marvelous Ms. Marvel
jrdurrance8 June 2022
I'm loving this show so far. The teenage comic-y feel reminds me of Homecoming, and the way they blend playful CGI moments with the dynamic camera work is especially engaging.

Also, Iman Vellani's acting is incredible and her character is so relatable. She 100% reminds me of some people I knew back when I was that age.
