The newspaper article ("Von der Bühne auf die Barrikaden") Smiley uses to conceal the documents he is reading on the train back to Hamburg dates his train journey to the week from October 2nd, 1981 to October 8th, 1981, assuming that Smiley picked up the current issue of the weekly at a newsstand.
What the Russian agents are saying outside of Madame Ostrakova's apartment roughly translates to "Let's go." and "Don't do anything." and finally "Sounds good."
In Smiley's lengthy interview with old Connie (Beryl Reid), she is given to making funny malapropisms, all on purpose a la Cockney style slang, including a reference to a person with "Eyes wide shut", perhaps presaging the odd title conjured up over a decade later by Stanley Kubrick for his final film -one wouldn't be surprised to find out that Stanley had watched this British TV series.
