Making a science fiction movie is usually a very expensive endeavour. Costumes, makeup, special effects – modern audiences are spoiled by rich visuals. Besides, when you have an alien in the frame, you want it to look like the real thing.
However, spending a lot of money on production can sometimes be detrimental to the plot. Investors want guaranteed profits, so expensive blockbusters eschew experimentation in favor of proven moves and simple solutions. But when there are no sponsors, you have less technical capabilities, but more creative freedom.
For example, Alex Garland's cult film Ex Machina was made on a budget of only $15 million, which is more than modest for a science fiction movie. In the history of cinema, however, there is an even more astonishing story of a project made for pennies by genre standards.

A curiousity has passed by our desks today. Look below for the first images from an upcoming silent sci-fi fantasy feature called Myth of Man. The indie sci-fi film from writer/director Jamin Winans, produced with their partner Kiowa Winans, should be making its debut later this year. There is no dialogue in this new film. Rather, Myth of Man will be what Winans calls, 'musically driven'. Winans also scored the film. Check out the images below the announcement. We appreciate the design and esthetic, almost steam-punkish. Writer/Director Jamin Winans shares the first images from his upcoming sci-fi fantasy feature, aiming for a fall 2024 premiere. Fifteen years after the breakout sci-fi indie hit Ink and his follow up...

Peter Morgan’s play Patriots, the drama about the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s fall, will transfer from a celebrated London run to Broadway this spring, with previews beginning April 1 at the Barrymore Theatre ahead of a reported April 22 opening.
The limited engagement will run through June 23.
The play, produced by Sonia Friedman with Rupert Goold directing, will star Will Keen, reprising his Olivier-winning performance as Vladimir Putin, with Luke Thallon, also a West End cast member, playing Roman Abramovich. Michael Stuhlbarg will portray Boris Berezovsky, with additional casting to be announced.
Official synopsis: In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russia belongs to its oligarchs – and no one is more powerful than billionaire Boris Berezovsky. Exclusive: Tony- and Olivier Award-winning actor Bertie Carvel, who portrays Tony Blair opposite Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown, remembers meeting the the real Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace “and nearly head-butting” her “in my attempt to try not to be too obsequious, but to follow the right form.”
He still has a photo of him being introduced to the monarch at an event nine years ago. “I look like the Mr. Bean sketch where he bows and knocks her out. I’m so towering over the queen and I look like I really should have gone to the barber, and I was red-faced and hairy.”
Well, The Crown’s crack hair and makeup team led by designer Cate Hall has ensured that he’s respectfully coiffured to portray Blair.

Queen Elizabeth has been played by numerous actors over the years — three in Netflix’s The Crown alone. But tracking not far behind when it comes to onscreen depictions of major British figures is former prime minister Tony Blair. Among the names to have stepped into the shiny brogues of the divisive politician are the likes of Damien Lewis, Robert Lindsay, Toby Stephens, James Larkin, Ioan Gruffudd, Stephen Mangan, Harry Enfield and Pierce Brosnan (as a version of Blair in Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer). Michael Sheen has also famously played Blair three times.
Joining this illustrious list is Bertie Carvel, the star of stage and screen who joined The Crown for its final outings in seasons five and six. While he’s mostly a supporting bystander in season five, the sixth and final season of Netflix’s hit royal drama — which centered its first four episodes, now streaming,...

A man convicted in the notorious 1969 kidnapping and murder of Muriel McKay, the wife of Rupert Murdoch deputy Alick McKay, has offered to reveal the location of the victim’s body in exchange for a lifting of a deportation order that bars him from entering the UK.
According to a Sky News report, Nizamodeen Hosein, now 75 and living in his native Trinidad, has offered to help McKay’s daughter Dianne, 82, locate her mother’s body, believed to be buried at the Hertfordshire farm formerly owned by Hosein and his brother Arthur Hosein. Both men were convicted of the crime in 1970 and sentenced to life in prison, where Arthur Hosein died in 2009.
Nizamodeen Hosein was deported to Trinidad after serving 20 years in prison. Muriel McKay’s body has never been located. After decades of silence, Hosein, according to Sky, now claims she collapsed and died of a heart attack while being held at the farm.

The BBC has acquired U.K. free-to-air rights of high profile crime drama “Tokyo Vice” (8 x 60’), which has a pilot episode directed by Michael Mann, from Endeavor Content. The BBC has second window rights for the U.K. and will air it later this year. The series will stream in the U.K. on Starzplay from May 15. Endeavor has sold the series, currently streaming on HBO Max in the U.S., wide.
Co-produced by HBO Max, Endeavor and Japanese broadcaster Wowow, the series is based on American journalist Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. The series, filmed on location in Tokyo, captures Adelstein’s (Ansel Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem. “Tokyo Vice” was created and written by Tony-winning playwright J.T. The value of film production in the U.K. climbed 7% to £1.96 billion ($2.42 billion) last year, the second-highest level on record. The vast majority of that was generated by Hollywood movies, but although the British independent sector is overshadowed commercially, it is holding its own creatively.
Despite the pain and disruption caused by the coronavirus crisis, Adrian Wootton, CEO of the British Film Commission, is confident that the production boom that the U.K. was enjoying pre-lockdown will resume. Underpinning that is the 25% tax rebate for production, a strong and growing studio infrastructure, a thriving VFX sector, and a rich vein of talent behind and in front of the camera, Wootton says.
Apart from Covid-19, another cloud looming is Brexit, the full effect of which will only be felt at the end of the year. The VFX sector is particularly vulnerable, as a third of its workforce is from European Union countries.

With some considerable help from Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Broadway box office held steady during the Fourth of July holiday week, even with two fewer shows on board than the previous week. Down a small 5%, total receipts for the 33 productions tallied to $34,108,643 for Broadway’s Week 6 (ending July 7).
A solid $1,331,046 of that total came from Moulin, Sro at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where the musical played only five previews to allow for rehearsals. The show now shifts to a seven-performance schedule until the July 25 opening night, when it begins the standard eight-per-week.
Total attendance for the 33 shows was 288,107, a barely noticeable 3% slip from the previous week, when 35 productions reported figures. More shows than not reported box office slips from the previous week, competition with fireworks being what it is.
As with the previous week, director Alex Timbers’ adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 hit movie was among the hottest tickets on Broadway.

Congratulations to Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Gordon Cox (Variety) for topping all Experts with an outstanding score of 88.46% when predicting the 2019 Tony Awards winners on Sunday. Not only did they beat all other Experts but they tied as the best of over 1,000 people predicting the Broadway event worldwide. See Experts’ scores.
Our top scorers each just missed three of the 26 categories. Travers’ misses were for Best Play Revival (choosing “All My Sons” over “The Boys in the Band”), Best Lighting Design of a Play (choosing “Network” over “Ink”) and Best Sound Design of a Play (choosing “The Ferryman” over “Choir Boy”). Cox’s misses were for Best Orchestrations (choosing “Oklahoma!” over “Hadestown”), Best Lighting Design of a Play (choosing “The Ferrman” over “Ink”) and Best Sound Design of a Play (choosing “The Ferryman” over “Choir Boy”). Both men got Best Musical (“Hadestown”), Best Musical Revival (“Oklahoma!”), Best Play (“The Ferryman”) and all acting categories.

Predicting the outcome of the design categories at the Tony Awards proves a challenge every year. But if you want to perform well in our prediction contest, you’ll need to ace these tough below-the-line races. Here is a rundown of how the competition is shaking out in each of the four design awards for the plays.
Scenic Design
Usually there is some enormous rotating set in contention that becomes the obvious winner. Not so this year, as this scenic design trophy is truly anyone’s for the taking. Rob Howell is being widely predicted to win for “The Ferryman.” That show is the likely Best Play winner, so Howell could come along for the ride with his intricately detailed Irish farmhouse with its exaggerated ceiling. He is a past Tony winner on the musical side for “Matilda,” so voters are familiar with him. “The Ferryman” only has one true...

With mere days to go before the 2019 Tony Awards on Sunday June 9th, David Buchanan and I are locking in our final predictions for the play categories. Though using that word “final” is giving us panic attacks for some of these tight races. Watch the full video above.
We begin confidently enough, backing Jez Butterworth’s “The Ferryman” for Best Play. “I don’t want to discount the other plays in the category,” explains David, but the epic Irish drama has dominated conversation all season long. I do offer the possibility of a massive upset in the form of “What the Constitution Means to Me.” Heidi Schreck’s word-of-mouth hit crested with buzz at just the right moment. I mention that the show is “so powerful and relevant” in today’s political climate that it has a chance to overtake “The Ferryman.”

Out of all the nominees spread across the 26 categories at the 2018 Tony Awards, 20 of them stand out as particularly noteworthy. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
The following Broadway productions from this past season were completely shut out by the nominating committee: “Head Over Heels,” “Straight White Men,” “Pretty Woman,” “The Nap,” “The Lifespan of a Fact,” “American Son,” and “True West.”
This year marks the second time this decade that the category of Best Musical consisted of five nominees, the first being in 2016. It’s also the third time for both Best Play (which had five nominees in 2014 and 2018) and Best Play Revival (which had five nominees in 2016 and 2018). And this year marks the fourth instance when the category of Best Musical Revival had only two nominees; the previous times were in 1995, 2002, and 2011.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” was snubbed for Best Play! Glenda Jackson is noticeably absent from Best Actress! But three of the five characters represented in the Featured Actor in a Play category are gay, so it’s all good! Let’s take the 2019 Tony Awards nominations category by category.
Best Play
The nominees are: “Choir Boy,” “The Ferryman,” “Ink,” “Gary: A Sequel To Titus Andronicus” and “What The Constitution Means To Me”
Will Win: “The Ferryman.” Long. British playwright. Northern Irish setting. Impressive. An event. Wiih dancing, even. And it provides employment to geese, rabbits, and babies. Though most of the action happens in the last five minutes.
Left Out: “To Kill A Mockingbird,” which can console itself with running for years; “Network” (People liked the presentation more than the play); “American Son”; “The Nap” (some snored); “Bernhardt/Hamlet”; “The Lifespan of a Fact”.

Last year, “The Band’s Visit” stormed the ceremony with a whopping 10 wins, including Best Musical. David Yazbek finally became a Tony winner for his intimate Middle Eastern inspired score, and he will be back in contention this year for “Tootsie.” The musical adaptation of the classic film stars previous Tony nominee Santino Fontana (“Cinderella”) in the role Dustin Hoffman made famous. The show will face serious competition from “Hadestown,” a riff on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth with a folk opera score from Anais Mitchell. Director Rachel Chavkin (“The Great Comet”) has guided the show through successful runs Off-Broadway and in London, and is...

Two years after sweeping the Tony Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical “Hamilton” did the same at the British equivalent, the Olivier Awards, on April 8. It won seven of its record 13 bids, including Best Musical. While that haul matched that of another tuner, “Matilda,” it fell two short of the benchmark set last year by the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”
On the play side, the big winner was Jez Butterworth‘s “The Ferryman,” a dark drama about the Irish troubles, which is set to come to Broadway in the fall. It only won three of its eight races but they were biggies: Best Play, Best Director (Sam Mendes) and Best Actress (Laura Donnelly). Bryan Cranston claimed the Best Actor prize for the stage version of the 1976 Oscar-winning film “Network.” Peter Finch had won the Oscar for playing Howard Beale, a TV anchor gone mad.

Like Christopher Nolan on a budget, writer/director Jamin Winans (Ink) creates worlds where imagination and emotion trump logic and traditional cohesion. That’s not a criticism of either man’s talents — instead it’s just to say that both place a high premium on the way their films make us feel and the ideas we’re left to mull over in our minds once the credits have rolled. Winans’ latest film, The Frame, continues that theme as it presents viewers with a beautiful, sci-fi tinged love story fueled by fate, forgiveness and wonder. Alex (David Carranza) is a criminal with a conscience, but his desire to escape the life puts a target on his back. Sam (Tiffany Mualem) spends her days saving lives as an Emt, but her lonely nights are filled with guilt and shame over past deeds. They lead separate lives where co-workers take the place of real friends, where...

This trailer for a new film called The Frame is absolutely captivating. It one of the most unique trailers that I've seen in a long time. The movie comes from husband and wife filmmaking team Jamin Winans and Kiowa Winans, who also made the movie Ink. Apparently they've been quietly working on the film for three years, and all we really know about it is that it's "a mind-bending science fiction mystery."
The trailer is edited together brilliantly. It's very unique and it has some really interesting visuals. I can't wait to learn more about this feature because it looks like it has some awesome potential. The movie will be released in the fall. ...

A couple of years ago there was a lot of buzz circulating around director Jamin Winans' feature film Ink. I remember seeing the poster everywhere but the movie dropped off my radar completely until earlier today when I saw the first trailer for Winan's feature film follow-up.
The Frame stars David Carranza and Tiffany Mualem and besides the fact that the movie is a sci-fi mystery, that's really all we know about the project. Winan and producing (and life) partner Kiowa K. Winans are keeping details under wraps but one thing is certain: this is looking mighty fine.

In 2011 we reviewed a little known, low-budget sci-fi movie called Ink. Ink’s creation was anything but typical. None of the big studios picked up the film for distribution in the Us, so Double Edge Films pitched the movie directly to independent cinemas, DVD, Blu-ray and online distribution by themselves. It was a move that worked, because Ink became one of the most downloaded movies on file sharing torrent sites (400,000 times in a single week), exposing the film to a much larger audience. If you haven't seen Ink yet, believe us, it's about time you did. It’s not always an easy watch, but at the end of the day, the world of Ink comes together like the words on a page. Ambitious, dreamlike and never less than compulsive, Ink writes its name at the very top of Independent filmmaking. You can check out our full review just here. Well,...

Denver based writer-director Jamin Winans created quite the stir with his 2009 indie scifi effort Ink. Winans' debut film had ambitions worlds beyond its budget and talent to match, winning love around the world thanks to its impressive visual style and while Winans has been largely quiet in the years since he's back now, having freshly released the trailer for sophomore feature The Frame.Plot details are being kept deliberately under wraps for now but the visual aesthetic very much remains intact. The trailer is a bit of a puzzle box, hinting at quite a lot while actually revealing very little, but it's a compelling one. Check it out below....

Now this is something very unique. Some may remember an indie sci-fi film from a few years back titled Ink, about a mysterious creature that steals children's souls featuring mesmerizing visuals. Well, the filmmaking team behind Ink, husband and wife Jamin Winans and Kiowa Winans, have returned with a new project called The Frame where they've "dug even deeper" this time. They've been quietly working on this for the last three years, and now the first trailer has debuted. It's very nicely edited, a bit trippy, captivating and still mysterious. No plot details are available yet, but you might want to give this trailer a look anyway. Here's the first official trailer for Jamin Winans' The Frame, direct from their own YouTube: There is currently no synopsis or any other story details available for The Frame yet, aside from it being "a mind-bending science fiction mystery" starring newcomers David Carranza and Tiffany Mualem.

Double Edge Films and director Jamin Winans have completed production on the sci-fi thriller The Frame. Winans is most widely known for his production on the short film "Spin" and the brilliantly shot sci-fi feature Ink. Both films were self-distributed. As well, Winans scores all of his own films, including his latest. Film fans can see Winans' upcoming endeavour, with the first trailer for The Frame hosted here. Double Edge Films is keeping the plot of The Frame behind close doors. Only the genres of the film have been revealed. The Frame will blend science fiction tones with those of mystery. Also, David Carranza and Tiffany Mualem will star. The trailer for The Frame is truly beautiful. Short shots are interspersed over an image of a man running. Meanwhile, Winans' score offers a moody trance-like soundtrack, which matches up to the action onscreen perfectly. The first official trailer for The Frame...

A few years ago I was astonished by an indie trailer that showed up in my inbox like a doorstep orphan with cool visual effects. The movie was Ink from Jamin Winans, and it turned out to be a rough around the edges, modern fairytale with a fascinating palette (and, yes, cool visual effects). Winans has continued to impress with short films, but even though he had open channels into Hollywood after Ink, he decided to stick with financing projects on his own. Why? To retain final cut. And because he loves working 120-hour weeks. His style sometimes feels like a mainstream adventurer by way of Shane Carruth, but this trailer for his latest film, The Frame, looks like something David Fincher slashed together. Dark, percussive and angry, it shows off microseconds of intriguing shots without giving us the first idea of what the story is. A perfect teaser trailer. Absolutely...

Jamin Winans made a name for himself as a filmmaker with Ink — an impressive dark fantasy that found a balance between emotionally gripping storytelling and unique visuals. His short films haven’t hurt either. It’s fairly obvious that he’s passionate about fairy tales and genre filmmaking in equal measure, but so far there are almost no details about what his forthcoming movie, The Frame, will be about. According to an email from Winans, the project has set up a Facebook page in order to make the production interactive. The above image was taken from the page with no comment beyond “Something you might see in The Frame.” Mystery abounds. I’m currently hunting down a synopsis, but absent that, it’s a matter of climbing aboard the train bicycle of this new work based on Winan’s track record. Considering the true cult status of Ink, that won’t be hard to do for many...

Director/writer: Jamin Winans.
Cast: Christopher Soren Kelly, Quinn Hunchar and Jessica Duffy.
Ink is one of those stylish movies that succeed in breathing life to the stuff of daydreams and nightmares. Not only can this be viewed time and time again to enjoy, but also it can speak to those who love to explore the meaning of what goes on with the subconscious mind. Sometimes, the images a person receives in that state is a dark metaphor for life untamed, and it has a style that both Neil Gaiman (The Sandman) and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) can appreciate.
With denizens from the underworld looking like well dressed ghosts donning white sunglasses, they come through as genuinely creepy. These dark lords of the Dreamtime are Incubi (with no relation to the creatures in folklore) and they are a stark contrast to the guardians of hope, better known as the Storytellers.

Released in 2009, Ink is an indie fantasy whose intricate story and unique visuals belie its tiny budget. Ryan takes a closer look at an overlooked gem…
Filmmaking history is full of stories about writers and directors who’ve gained lots of adulation from their first feature. Films such as Another Earth and Monsters have deserved every glowing review thrown their way, and their directors (respectively, Mike Cahill and Gareth Edwards) will no doubt go on to achieve similarly great things.
There’s an inevitable flipside to those Cinderella-like success stories, though, which brings us to the 2009 sci-fi fantasy, Ink. Shot for just $250,000, what writer and director editor and distributor Jamin Winans, along with his executive producer wife Kiowa, have achieved is remarkable. And yet, in spite of its obvious quality, it was overlooked by major Hollywood studios, was barely distributed in Us cinemas, and went straight to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK.

Why Watch? DJ as destiny. People as Rube Goldberg device. Jamin Winans came out of nowhere (seemingly) to amaze with Ink, but this is the short film that got him the attention he deserved in the first place. It’s a head-noddable exploration of the rhythm of life where editing has as big a role to play as camera work. How does everything in life work out? Apparently it’s because of a guy in a bandana lugging around twin turntables. What does it cost? Just 8 minutes of your time. Check out Spin for yourself: Spin (2005) Trust us. You have time for more short films.
