Bill Reynolds shot the sheriff using 2 rounds from the sheriff's 6-shot revolver. During the pursuit and after the crash, he fires 4 more rounds, which would have emptied the gun. After he is shot, he rolls over and fires a 7th shot.
Matthews and officer Mark Reynolds ride in the patrol car together while chasing Mark's criminal brother, Bill, who is disguised as a sailor and who has hijacked an old man to drive him during his escape. In two wide shots of the patrol car during the chase, the patrol car only has a driver...no passenger. In closeup shots, though, it shows both Matthews with officer Mark Reynolds in the passenger's seat.
The Highway Patrol headquarters, where dozens of officers and vehicles are stationed, appears to be located in a building with 20 feet of street frontage, sandwiched between a cigar store and a barber shop.
Unit 2218 calls via radio to Matthews that a sailor had just passed through his roadblock, and he only describes the car as a station wagon. A few seconds later, Matthews broadcasts an alert and describes the station wagon as being a 1954 model.
