They Are Not Forgotten
dk77723 April 2021
An interesting and tense series that takes place during the military operation Storm, an operation in which the Republic of Croatia liberated the territory that was under the occupation of Serbian forces.

Director Kristijan Milic has already proven to be a great filmmaker, who not only knows how to shoot great action scenes, but also knows how to create a tense atmosphere. With a good director, even mediocre actors look good because he gets the best out of them, so the acting in the series is quite decent.

The sound is interesting, and although it could be even better, the soundtrack is well used to create an ominous atmosphere that gets more and more tense as the series progresses.

Some things could be much better, but when compared to the rest of Croatian production, this really looks great. So I will still give the series the highest rating, regardless of the shortcomings, because here obviously the production has invested a lot of effort. The acting varies, but as I've already pointed out, even mediocre actors look good with a capable director.

The appearance of the army is authentic, as are the equipment and markings. The locations are carefully selected, and the series is excellently directed and gives the viewer an interesting insight into a unique situation.

The real people were the inspiration for the characters in the show. The series is the story of brave people who defended their homeland. They are not forgotten.

Good action scenes, tense atmosphere, interesting characters and an excellent soundtrack.

1st episode was excellent, rest is disappointing
jaybone-5433724 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First episode contains action, excitement, all that war serie needs. It follows the story of several croatian soldiers behind enemy lines where they witnessed a war crime against other Croatian soldiers. Following that, they decide to revenge by finding and killing Ljubo, main officer of Serbian forces who committed the war crime.

Man would except in further episodes the following - searching for Ljubo, sillent tension and combats, but instead in second and third episodes we see actors just walking all over the territory, sometimes they sing(???) and laugh like they are on the fieldtrip while they are in the middle of war zone behind the enemy lines where they search for a war criminal and were being searched from serbian forces.

Fourth, the last one, episode brings our protagonists to Ljubo on some weird Serbian party while Serbians are loosing war. Poor copy/try of copy of 'Apocalypse now'. One of the soldiers meets there his former girlfriend who is a main singer on party and decides to bring her with them after they kill Ljubo. So there's a love story, right? Other soldier kills Ljubo in 10 seconds fight chest to chest while Ljubo tries to rape some girl.

There is even more nonsense which I don't have will writing like where protagonists meet bosnian special forces in the middle od nowhere where they are baking a lamb with open fire...

I am sad, because it was a good idea, great concept of story but poorly executed in the end. I am giving 3 just because of the first episode which was 10, had sense. Other 3 episodes are boring and don't have much sense. Pitty...

Just because it is better than "General" doesnt mean its good (edit: and it isnt)
mov13junk134 February 2020
You have to know that his series was aired right after the not so well received TV-Series "General", hence the bar was set so low that everything after it that proves to be even slightly better will be overhyped by the audiences, one of the main actors actually played in both productions and its obviouse that the acting is the same.

The series is directed by Kristijan Milic, a director who did war movies before, so if you liked "broj55" or "zivi i mrtvi" than you already know what to expect.

I watched the first episode yesterday and i could tell from the start that it has slightly better cinematography and better music/sound than General but that doesnt mean it has a good screenplay, pacing is very slow and it takes way to much time to get to the point where you as in audience will be invested. It is PG15 rather than PG12 which means it has more violent action but i doubt that the shown action is realistic. Scenes, plot and action are very constructed, what i disliked is that too much is filmed up close, you never get some aerial view of the location so you actually never know exactly where they are or about the surroundings they are in. maybe its all filmed at the same location so they hide it this way by not showing aerials. i will not go into the details of the plot and what i disliked in the first episode about it, just to not spoil it for future viewers.

I do hope the story will develop thruh the next episodes to the better and the pacing and action will improve, until then i give this only some average rating so far.

To all the critics that might disagree or get offended, there are 20+year old movies that did a better job in displaying war in the balkans (without any digital tools), THEY should be the bar to reach or to surpas and not some theater-like production that was recently done by an 88year old man who retired decades ago !!! Stop treating "croatian-film" like an isolated bubble, they have the same equipment at hand like any other international production, its time they learn to use it and step up their game.

UPDATE:

After watching the complete series im totaly dissapointed. If the producers would have focused on the script as much as they did on PublicRelation this could have been a good series, instead its unbelievable how much the producer talks about the script, but nothing of his intentions are actually visible in it, it seems more like that he afterwards whitewashes all the plotholes in his interviews and no way did he worked 10years on this, more like 10mins.

So who is the producer/screenwriter ? Well, he is famouse for being a quiz-master on stateTV, was never to war himself even so he is 48y old and of course his 26y girlfriend got a small role in the series too. Couldnt be more of a cliche than that. So he teamed up with director Milic whos last film "mrtve ribe" which did cost millions of taxpayer money ended up being watched in cinemas by less than 100 people in croatia. What could got wrong with a team like that, as it turns out: everything!

The TV-series, instead of getting better after every episode, they droped the ball right away and turned it into a mess and it got worse and worse, even the final showdown didnt save it for me anymore. They totaly lost me when they integrated some weird woman that seem to symbolize "the angel of death?", there are many more plotholes especially in ep4 which i wont waste my time one, but that mystery-stunt and the unrealisticly filmed end killed it for me. I wouldnt want to watch this again, not even on a rainy boring day.

dont trust the ridiculously positive rating
dalmatinac-864161 March 2020
These high-star ratings are obviously created by the director, friends and the crew itself, because after the average first episode the TV series went downhill instead of uphill, turned even mystery and has an absolutely cringeworthy corny supernatural end.

However, if you like bad TV series with utterly nonsensical plot and like watching people wandering around for hours, talking pubtalk that isnt even funny, this movie actually might be for you.

This is the second war-themed series in a row we croatians got to see on TV and it established its own flavour of being bad. I would call it General 2.0 because you dont really see where they spent all the production-money on but in defens of General 1.0, it actually teaches you mostly accurate historical facts while this is just made up BS that bores you to death for the most part, or gives you headaches when you try to make sense of how the plot unfolds or should i rather say: implodes.

dont get me even started on the western-music and the joke they ripped of from Predator at the end, oh yes and the lack of bulletholes during the last shootout or how they drove of by night, but than its daylight all of a sudden while still exchanging gunfire. they probably noticed they couldnt use the blue-filter-stuff they used in the 2nd episode to fake a daylight scene into a moonlight scene again because this time it wouldnt match with the real night-scenes from before ...

SO they didnt even bother, but added a dead persons "ghost" instead and ended the series on that note.

Twice as good as General
susakfranjo25 February 2020
I disagree with the other reviewers, this is not the best that was ever made on the balkans and "croatian film industry" DOES live in a bubble, its a state funded money burning mess therefore even we croatians mostly ignore it and stick to foreign productions.

For 3 episodes we watch 6 soldiers wander around a wasteland behind the enemies line, everytime the villan with a few of his thugs appears in the far distance, killing friendlies, the sniper NEVER takes a shot. In between we get some lenghty random dream-sequence.

In the final episode they end up dressed in enemies camo on a big party, ALL enemy forces present. In the evening they secretly start killing off some soldiers in close-combat using knifes or barehanded unnoticed by the other celebrating soldiers, the villain itself gets his skull crushed in with a rock. Than the 6 with some random girl drive of to escape the wrath of the enemy who in the meantime noticed the murdered soldiers. A shootout occurs followed by a car chase that in one moment started of by night and in the next scene continues by daylight with some more fire exchange between the vehicles. Now one of our 6 guys gets hit by a bullet, the enemies suddenly retreat and the group drives of "home".

In the radio we hear that the croatian forces successfully engaged its biggest counter-offensive (operation storm), bare in mind, the celebrating opposing forces (with the lacking security) knew about this offensive !!!

THATS THE PLOT.

Just good start
zgotal1 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What to say, started promising and ended with question above head. Even domestic watchers got problem with understand what is going on , because sound is sometimes so opaque and plot is not even explained. through actors. Some illogicality appear in task how they want to eliminate character named Ljubo , even they find in contacts twice they did't try to eliminate and just wander around unknown territory , There is doubt how they solved problem with "corn mine" where one of actor almost pull hidden wire, and second solder tray poking with knife around foot of colleague like that is landmine. At the end they try to leave enemy territory (forget on Ljubo) with given direction of captivated merchant traveler they come across enemy barricade(don't now they are fulled with give direction or they lost direction), and then they find themselves instead in nobody's land, at some strange place of gathering for escape locals and enemy solders(meeting point close to first combat line is not recommended) . Very end is more unreal where pursuit by few enemy car ,was fired on both side quite ammo and nobody in those chasing car is hurt. I don't now who will follow in common car somebody who shoot at you with 3 AK47 , this is impossible if shooter is not blind. There is 4 episodes and from episode 1 serial decline in each one to level of naive.

Good start. Rest very bad.
mpthompson-088993 March 2020
Good start. Rest very bad. Teenagers maybe like it. Unrealistic for people who seen true war. Put our soldiers, dead or live, to shame in begining 3 episodes, never shoot bad guy or safe friends. Unheroic. All nonsense. Why dream? Why Lamb? Why gypsy ? Why ghost? Why girlfriend? All stupid.

Sorry my bad english.

How not to write a screenplay and not to do PR
scriptdoctor-346339 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One of the actors in an interview slandered the audiences who considered episode 3 to be the worst because of the mystery-aspect and called the unbiased press who reported ALL viewer-opinions to be manipulators, hence i felt the urge to write a review.

The newspaper producing the interview (VL) was at the same time a sponsor of the show, accusing others of manipulation while reporting biased and selective seems to be pure projection, they even ignored their own comment-section. The series just had a bad script, considering that croatia has combat-experienced veterans they shouldnt be wondering to get called out on it.

Just to show how much the screenplay lacked here are a few major points:

(1)

Thru 3 episodes the six just watch how friendlies are killed without even engaging, that made them appear weak. It would have looked better if those six have appeared in the aftermath after those friendlies where killed, they where on foot after all while the enemy had vehicles. This "trail of blood" would be the thread that connects all episodes together, to emphazise Ljubo as the villian he could have had some "signature move" that makes him identifiable thruh his victims.

Instead i sympathized with Ljubo within the first 5mins of the series, he put the 3 captured enemies first in the truck, than another vehicle came and in the back we see some of his own soldiers bloodsmeared & dead since they where killed by those captured, after seeing his dead men he immediatly decides to avenge them which in that context was relateable.

If you create a scene where the "supposed villain" is more relateable than your own guys, you already messed up the whole plot !

I couldnt relate with the six because the sniper, having Ljubo multiple times in his firing line, didnt engage. Instead they watch how their own troups get executed. I wouldnt want to serve with soldiers like this in any war scenario, thats sure not a "Band of Brothers".

There was also always something missing that left clues where to look for Ljubo next, how did they even know where to go next ?

(2)

Same on the start, it would have been better if the three where killed before the six arrived, Gradski would have been captured later from his hideout while Ljubo and most of his men have already driven off and comanded his few men who stayed behind to "finish off" Gradski and bury the evidence, this is where the six than interven, they kill the few enemys, save Gradski but lose there friend in the fireexchange. Therefore now decide to hunt down Ljubo.

Here we dont even know why the few men where left there by Ljubo and why there werent more guards watching the surroundings, moments ago they just captured enemies, you should think they are on high alert assuming there are even more around hiding. The surroundings are partially still burning, it was never shown why.

(3)

Its bad cinematography if you dont show a over-the-shoulder-shot so we, the audience, actually get an feeling/estimate how far the scene our six scouts are looking at is and where we actually are, what surroundings. We actually never get to see the surroundings to have some orientation.

(4)

Gradski should have had the nightmare instead of Nervoza! A flashback and in it, he dreams of the incident from the start of the series that resultet in the capture of his comrades, showing it from his perspective how they actually where ambushed. THAT would have brilliantly connected the start together with the 3rd episode before the finale of the series and resolved some questions. Gradski feels shame & guilt because he is alive while his friends are dead, he couldnt help them from his hideout, witnessed their execution before he got captured too. When Ljubo kills his last comrade with a headshot, the moment Ljubo pulls the trigger, Gradski wakes up all sweaty and in shock from his nightmare.

Or they should have let Nervoza get shot in the dream to "foreshadow" the end of the series where his character actually gets shot. They slightly tried this with Nervoza repeating his last line from episode4 "pape govori" in the end of (the way too long) dream sequence, but that was too much of a stretch together with the female "angel of death"-character staring at him while he sleeps. That whole part seemed out of place and ruined the show.

Multiple bad "foreshadowings" together with multiple bad "red herrings" (papa speaking regularly, papa dying) did backfire here, it negated one against the other out. They foreshadowed it again in the dialog when the kombi broke down in episode4 which was okay because it was subtle and in the same episode it later actually happens.

(5)

That female "ghost/angelofdeath"-character was totaly out of place and overused, first she saves them from a landmine and later from a squad of serbs and gets shot in the end while the six (again) just watch and than re-appears at the end of the series in the last scene where they drive of home on the street.

It would have been better if they just added another clue-sequence with normal supporting actors (from the other village that was shown) than that nonsense. Or she should have only appeared in Nervozas now multiple but short dreams while he takes a short nap.

Putting her in the real world turned it all into a mess and everyghing questionable!

MAYBE the complete series was just a dream and our six arent a special unit but just regular man who never enlisted during the whole war, never have seen real action but rather fantasized of it while barbequing a lamb in the safety of croatias main capitol city zagreb while others where fighting the war for them, 25 years later they ended up in showbiz.

If you write a script, you have to ask if a scene can easily be misinterpreted, if the answer is yes, you have to work on it more.

(6)

The main-argument for the nonsensical first 3 episodes according to the screenwriter, "Well, they coudlnt engage and kill Ljubo with the Sniper, because if they miss they will be discoverd and in trouble", utter BS, first of all, they where six and Ljubo and his men where only 12, but the enemy itself isnt aware how many enemy forces are hiding and attacking, how should they know they are only 6 and not 18 ?

In small groups you usualy use Guerilla-Hit-and-run tactics, a tactical doctrine of using short surprise attacks, withdrawing before the enemy can respond in force, and constantly maneuvering to avoid full engagement with the enemy.

So in this case, if you kill Ljubo, you run away, if you miss, you run away, regroup and try again next time from a different location. But on three occasions never to engage while having Ljubo directly in the firing line is just a stupid plot.

In the last episode the six end up in the enemies main headquater with more than 60+ armed enemies, them six not even with proper insigina on their uniform, just a enemies hat and all of a sudden the reason mentioned above doesnt apply anymore ? Nobody even asks for any papers while they travel thruh the whole enemies territory, even on road blocks, you just talk your way out of it, yeah right ? Them killing 4 enemies nearly in plane sight in close combat is NOT a threat to their safety if something goes wrong, someone screams, someone takes notice ? Where would they run and hide if something goes wrong? Instead they have even time to pickup an ex-girfriend in that place. All this was even worse than General!

What a contradicting excuse and statement after watching episode4!

(7)

Why does the fat-guy kill Ljubo, why not the boss of those six (boss against boss) and why does nobody cover his back while he is doing it. Why didnt Gradski do it, if he kills Ljubo in a rage with a rock it kind of makes more sense because he avenged the death of his friends he witnessed being killed by Ljubo. Seeing a fat guy fight a skinny guy seemed pathetic, like a school bully picking on the weakest guy.

(...)

I could go on and on and episode4 was just more nonsense thrown together, how long where they even driving, they drove of by night during a fireexchange and in the next scene they where still driving and shooting while its daylight, if they drove the whole night till dawn by now they should have reached Vienna/Austria and of course been out of ammo long time ago.

That screenplay was just amateurishly written and full of plotholes, hence the series was painful to watch, suitable for teenagers maybe, not adults. Considering the amount of money (7.4M kn according to imdb) they had and the amount of good and real veteran war-stories out there im in utter disbelief how someone could come up with THIS?

For that money there was even far far less noteworthy content or scenes (production value) in it than in General. Mountain nature, abandoned villages and an abandoned factory site, in croatia you get plenty of that for free! Like General they stopped doing postproduction at some point, mostly evident during the shootouts in episode4.

I give a rating of 1 because of the audacity of producing a lousy script for the 25th anniversary and all the media-fabrication they did but accused others of. How many citizens know that the number of alleged 420.000 tv-viewers is an estimate based on only 810 households ? As well as the always same twitter-girl with the multiple press-ready loveletter-tweets that always ended up being quoted by the productions favourite sponsor & newspaper (VL).

If the production-crew believes to be so awesome they should use their own money instead of taxpayers-money, produce a 100 minute war-movie and lets see how many movietickets are actually going to sell, still insist on the number of 420.000?

Great entertainment for my 70 year old parents
gala38525 February 2020
I'd give it a 6, but lack of eminent Academy award nominees like Momcilo Otasevic and Slavko Sobin are unforgetable. And directors didn't even consider to cast one of croatian best actresses like Jelena Veljaca Popovic Rastavljenic or Natasa Josko Nismo Se Tako Dogovorili Jonjic.

Othervise, great show to force your 33 year old son out of the house.
