Alternate history is one of science fiction’s biggest niches, at least on the bookshelves. There’s some big winners out there, like when historian and author Harry Turtledove took us on a trip through a Civil War where mercenaries funneled modern weapons to the Confederates in The Guns of the South. Meanwhile David Drake has a joyful obsession with introducing Roman centurions to aliens everywhere from Birds of Prey to Ranks of Bronze. It’s a ton of fun to splash through a world of what could have been.
Movies dip their toes into the genre to a far lesser extent, frequently sticking with takes on a post-wwii era where the Axis forces take control. There’s some fantastic movies in that niche, although they’re not often happy rides. But there are some great, zany takes on mixed-up history that a film fan can miss if they’re not looking.

Mamoru Oshii is most famous, arguably, for creating “Ghost in the Shell”. A cyberpunk classic that helped bring anime to a global audience. His work is profound and philosophical, often challenging the audience with complex themes and ideas. As well as “Ghost in the Shell”, Oshii is famous for a wide range of anime works, films like, “Angels Egg”, “Patlabor: The Movie”, and “The Sky Crawlers”. What often gets overlooked by fans is his live-action pieces, especially his Kerberos saga films. These were filmic adaptations of his “Kerberos Panzer Cop” manga (also known as “Hellhounds Legend”) which ran from 1988 to 2000. The series had two other film entries, “The Red Spectacles” and “Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade”, the latter directed by Hiroyuki Okiura, not Oshii, and the only anime adaptation in the trilogy.
“Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops” is the second film and prequel to the series.

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard Hawks’ El Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets.

Venice -- "The Wrestler" was the toast of the Lido on the Venice Film Festival's penultimate day, with star Mickey Rourke's interpretation of an aging wrestler struggling to come to terms with the end of his career creating a buzz that had been absent for most of the festival.
The Darren Aronofsky film helped the 65th edition of the Venice event wind up on a high note after days of steady criticism for what the domestic press has considered a relative lack of strong films in the lineup.
The competition film, which co-stars Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood, packed three Venice screenings Friday and prompted speculation among festival participants that Rourke could be a candidate for Venice's best actor prize, which will be announced with the other major awards Saturday.
Meanwhile, Pupi Avati's drama "Papa di Giovanna" (Giovanna's Father) won the Leoncino d'Oro on Friday. The name means "golden lion cub,...
