In his films, director and screenwriter Amat Escalante (Mexico) is committed to portraying the violence of his country in a provocative, head-on way. His first three feature films premiered at the Cannes Film Festival: Sangre and Los bastardos screened in the Un Certain Regard section, and his 2013 film Heli premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or, for which Escalante won the Best Director Award. In 2016, he presented The Untamed (La región salvaje), a film with science-fiction elements, in competition at the Venice Festival, which again won him the Best Director Award. This year, he premiered his fifth feature film, Lost in the Night, in the Cannes Premieres section. In this episode, we talk about the relationship between filmmakers and their social context. In conversation with programmer and critic Pamela Biénzobas, Escalante speaks about his relationship with the city of Guanajuato as a source of inspiration and his interest in establishing...

Cannes frequently gets criticized for the paucity of Latin American representation in the main competition, so it was widely assumed that the new feature from festival veteran Amat Escalante, the 2013 best director winner for Heli, would be guaranteed a spot. Sad to report that watching Lost in the Night (Perdidos en la noche), it’s easy to see why it was shuffled off to a sidebar. The Mexican filmmaker moves out from the shadow of his former mentor, Carlos Reygadas, with his most accessible work to date in this revenge thriller, which is engrossing enough but also a bit meandering and underpowered.
Escalante’s fifth feature takes its cues more from his experience in television on Narcos: Mexico than from his previous big-screen work, which could in theory bring him to a wider audience. But it lacks the tight cohesion of that series at its best, and softens the jarring intensity,...

Filmmaker Amat Escalante, who won best director at Cannes for 2013 film “Heli,” has signed with CAA.
“Heli,” where the protagonist tries to protect his family from a drug cartel and corrupt police, competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and won several more awards, including at Camerimage, Palm Springs, Stockholm and Munich and represented Mexico at the 86th Academy Awards in the then Best Foreign Language Film category.
Escalante’s follow-up feature “The Untamed,” where the lives of a couple in a troubled marriage are turned upside down by the discovery of a mysterious creature, competed for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2016, and won the Silver Lion for his direction. Like with “Heli,” Escalante won best director at Mexico’s Ariel Awards for “The Untamed.”

Using sci-fi to create a sexual allegory is a staple of body horror genre, just ask David Cronenberg. Now, let us introduce the body pleasure genre. No, not porn, but a character-driven drama in which personal and sexual growth synthesise in the name of erotic cinema.
Visual artist Ann Oren’s debut feature “Piaffe” fits this exact mold, following a meek introvert in Berlin who grows a horse’s tail and has a sexual awakening. Oren’s teasing style is the perfect route into the story. Shooting on 16mm, she mounts every scene by slowly, surely feeding in key details. In other words: she has a gift for both horseplay and foreplay.

Since 1933, Mexico has been a major pioneering force in Latin American horror cinema. In contemporary times, Mexican horror has blossomed into a diverse array of horror subgenres including paranormal, art house, independent, social-political, and extreme.
For those inspired to explore what Mexican horror has to offer, this film list is a beginner’s guide to contemporary Mexican horror, featuring films by art-house cinema icon Alejandro Jodorowsky, the Oscar-winning monster maker Guillermo del Toro and Mexico’s tiger queen Issa Lopez.
10. El Gigante
Though the only short film on this list, it’s a bold mix of Mexican wrestling, Rob Zombie, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with lots of blood and gore. While attempting to cross the American/Mexican border at night via a “coyote”, Armando is attacked and awakens in a dirty blood-splattered room. He is forced to wrestle for the entertainment of a sadistic family with the blood-thirsty wrestler El Gigante.

The Untamed, a Chinese web drama starring Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo as cultivator soulmates fighting injustices in a fantasy version of ancient China, broke through to international audiences in 2019 and remains one of the most popular shows in English-speaking transformative fandom two years later. The live-action xianxia series is based on Mo Dao Zu Shi, a very popular web novel written by Chinese author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (Mxtx). Despite the danmei’s many adaptations and international popularity, it is currently not officially available to read in English. Starting in December, that will change. Seven Seas Entertainment—an American publishing company that licenses manga, webcomics, and “light” Japanese novels—announced last week that they will be releasing an official, uncensored English-language translation of Mo Dao Zu Shi, complete with original art, glossary, end notes, and bonus chapters.
The new English-language Mo Dao Zu Shi translation will be published in five volumes,...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… but not in the world of corporate copyright. New Chinese fantasy drama Douluo Continent came under fire after its premiere last week when viewers noticed that some shots in the drama’s magical opening credits, created by third party company Visual Impact Digital Production, looked quite similar to shots in the magical opening credits for the His Dark Materials TV show…
You can watch the Douluo Continent credit sequence here:
And here’s the opening credits for the first season of His Dark Materials, designed by Clarissa Donlevy at Elastic…
As you may notice, the first four shots of each intro appear, at least to this pedestrian eye, to be identical. Viewers also noticed that the credit sequence, um, borrowed some CG animation of a character named Jhin from the League of Legends computer game.

If you’ve been on certain corners of the internet in the last year, then you’ve probably at least heard of The Untamed, the Chinese feudal-era fantasy melodrama filled with beautiful, bewigged men. Based on a queer romance web novel called Mo Dao Zu Shi or The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, the live-action screen adaptation (not to be confused with the animated or audio drama adaptations of the source material) follows Wei Wuixan (Xiao Zhan) and Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo), two soulmates and cultivators seeking justice in an often corrupt world of inter-clan rivalry. It’s brilliant, and is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube.
While The Untamed is filled with myriad delights, much of the onus of carrying the 50-episode story arc falls on the soldiers of Xiao, who is more than up for the task. The 29-year-old actor— whose name popped up in international...

Exclusive: Insecure EP Prentice Penny has reteamed with Netflix for his next directorial feature following the success of his debut film, Uncorked. Penny has partnered with Chernin Entertainment on an untitled holiday film, which is based on an original concept from himself, his wife Tasha Penny, and Insecure co-executive producer Phil Augusta Jackson.
While keeping plot details under wraps, Peabody and Golden Globe winner Prentice said, “I’m very excited and honored to bring this movie to life with Netflix and Chernin Entertainment. When my wife Tasha and I came up with the idea, we felt that African-American movies centered around Christmas never got to play in the same ‘magical’ sandbox that traditionally white movies do, like The Santa Clause or Elf. We wanted to see images of ourselves portrayed in this genre and create a movie that black families could enjoy having themselves represented in for generations.”

After six decades in limbo, China last week passed its first civil code, a wide-ranging legislative package that defines a number of important citizens’ rights. While activists had hoped it would include provisions to legalize gay marriage — particularly as officials acknowledged its inclusion was one of the most requested revisions during the open public comment period for the draft law — Chinese lawmakers ultimately rejected any rules to do so.
China’s latest setback highlights the continued need to change hearts and minds in the general public through Lgbt stories, say activists and filmmakers. Nevertheless, the code’s shortcoming hasn’t hampered the country’s growing demand for Lgbt-themed content among increasingly loud and proud gay communities — and the millions of mostly heterosexual female fans of the “boys love” genre, homoerotic stories about gay characters.
