- The Alienese in the opening sequence reads: "The humans shall not defeat us."
- The 'Wheel-of-Fortune' machines at the casino all say Wheel-of-Fortran. Fortran was the first high-level computer programming language.
- The Alienese that is on the sign under the roller coaster reads: "Caution : Falling humans".
- One of the Justices of the Supreme Court is a woman listed as "Sagal". Her hair and name suggest that she is Katey Sagal, the voice of Leela.
- The Sinatra-esque opening song is performed by "Family Guy" (1999) creator Seth MacFarlane.
- According to David X. Cohen on the commentary track (DVD), the coordinates of the Violet Dwarf have special significance. Part of the coordinates refers to "Mark 948" and when rephrased as Mark 9:48, the corresponding Bible verse (International Standard Version) is: "In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out." This is clearly an allusion to the climax of the movie.
- After Brannigan and Bender overhear the conversation between Leela and Fry, using some sort of spying device, Brannigan orders Kiff to set the coordinates to 36-24-36. This is Bart's locker combination from "The Simpsons" (1989), as well as the obvious, according to his hand movements, the measurements on Leela.
- Two of the original Eco-feminists (Dixie and Trixie, the blonde and the African American with pigtails) bear an uncanny resemblance to Slurm's Mackenzie's party girls from the episode "Futurama: Fry and the Slurm Factory (#2.4)" (1999).
- The film was written by Ken Keeler. When the 'Wong Sweeper' is destroying the rings of Saturn, a sign reading 'Mind the Keeler Gap' is shown. The Keeler Gap is a 42km gap in the 'A Ring', kept clear by the orbiting moon of Daphnis. Later, Fry makes reference to the Keeler Crater, which is actually located on the far side of the moon (not Mars). Zap Brannigan's map shows the location of 2261 Keeler, a main belt asteroid.
- Zap Brannigan can be heard singing 'Hungry Like the Wolf', by Duran Duran.
- The judges include Antonin Scalia, Janeane Garofalo, Clarence Thomas, Paula Abdul, Snoop Dogg, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Björk and Katey Sagal. Scalia, Thomas and Ginsburg are American jurists, Garofalo is a comedian and political activist, Snoop Dogg is a rapper, Abdul and Björk are singers/actresses, and Sagal is the voice of Leela.
- Nine has served as a cameo character in several Futurama episodes, mostly as an Easter Egg in crowd scenes.
- Calculon can be heard rehearsing his acceptance speech, thanking his operating system 'Windows 7', before malfunctioning. This is a reference to the difficulties many users face when using Microsoft OS's.
- The abandoned underground Martian settlement used as the headquarters of the Legion of Mad Fellows is visually based on Mesa Verde, the ancient cliff city built by the Anasazi tribe in Colorado.
