Yoon Sung-a's Overseas is exclusively showing November 25 - December 24, 2020 on Mubi in the Viewfinder series.Between August 2014 and December 2017, I did several scoutings in the Philippines to observe the comprehensive training that Filipino women must undergo before being deployed overseas as domestic workers. Here is an extract from my logbook describing a class I attended. ***May 20, 2015 - In Malina, while observing in a training center for domestic work.In a large classroom with a white-tiled floor, about thirty women occupy the room in two distinct rows, leaving a wide space in the center of the room. Wearing a faded, pale, grayish-green uniform, Mrs. Angelina, the trainer, stands very straight behind an old wooden desk. A young woman, standing in the middle of the room, reads a manual out loud that she is holding:"D’, for Domestic: Determined, Devoted and Disciplined. You need to work wholeheartedly."Mrs. Angelina comments with a firm and nasal tone.

Acronym Ofw stands for Overseas Filipino Workers. Sung-a Yoon, Korea-born director living in Brussels, in this Belgian-French co-production searched for human stories hidden behind the dispassionate term. However, she is not interested in migrant workers in a broad sense. What she focuses on are women who serve as domestic helps and nannies. It is estimated that every year, 200,000 Filipino women decide to travel abroad to get income as household service workers. Often having signed up for two-year contracts, they travel to rich, developing countries all over the globe, often leaving behind their own children. However, it is not uncommon that Ofw are toiling not returning home, thus without seeing their close ones, for years.

It’s a beautiful day in Grammy land — if you’re Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Roddy Ricch, Phoebe Bridgers, or any of the other artists who deservedly cleaned up when nominations for the 2021 awards were announced. For many others across the world of music, it’s time to call their managers, take a hard look in the mirror, and/or cry out to the heavens in despair and ask how the Recording Academy could have ignored their work. (Anyone who released music between September 1st, 2019 and August 31st, 2020, and filled out the proper submissions paperwork,...
